I just got the new DLC Return to ostagar and have played through it with a character i play through to learn all side quests, items, codexes, etc..whatever there is to the game. the first character i ran through it with didnt get the mages chest key from the hungrey deserter in ostagar. When this character played through return to ostagar i was able to loot the corpse of the hungry deserter to get the mages chest key. when i opened it, it had extra items in it that wasnt in the chest if it was opened during the first visit to ostagar. Now when i played through with a character that had looted and and opened the mages chest by the mages encampment in ostagar, the key disappeared and this prevents me from reopening the same chest in DLC return to ostagar. this sucks because this is my main character and i like to try to get every item and etc... the item i am wanting is the corrupted magister staff. I guess my question is if anyone else has had this problem, or if there is a remedy or a patch in the near future to fix it. Also if anyone has a question about anything other that this "glitch", add a new topic question on this forem and i will post the answer or my input on a daily basis.

It's not a glitch. In your first save you had not yet unlocked the chest so it was still there but in your second you already opened the chest once and used the key. Darkspawn probably looted the unlocked chest since you had opened it.

Yes, my character(s) got the mage chest key from the prisoner during the first visit to Ostager. When playing RtO however my character cannot open the mage chest in the second visit to Ostager for whatever reason.

d0de, thats a good point dode, but let me explain. the first character never did the quest to get the mages key, so when that character got to return to ostagar he was able to loot the body of the hungry deserter to get the key then open the chest, which has additional items in it that was added with the dlc return to ostagar. Now, with a seperate character that did complete the hungry deserter quest in the beginning (first visit to ostagar), this character opened the chest in beginning. the idea of the chest being ransacked by darkspawn is a good idea, except the chest is still there and it is relocked. i think there is a glitch. before downloading the dlc RtO, this character still had the mages chest key in his inventory. after the download this key disappears. perhaps this will get out to the tech guys at bioware and they can make an update to fix that among other things like the frustrating itemset bonus bug

yeah the mages chest thing its lame. But really RTO was lame as a whole. It really makes no sense in the storyline if you have completed the game, which considering it's delayed release should have been presumed. At no point do the NPC acknowledge the new king etc etc. Whole thing took me less than an hour. Totally not worth the money.

If you're playing RTO after having beat the game you have to remember the reason there is no reference to the new king for instance Alistair is because your game is set back before a new king and all that when you keep playing your save game after beating it. As for the key issue I have the same problem and that is irritating. I would have liked to have found Duncans body too though you know.

RtO gives you a second chance to loot the chest. If you looted it your first time, you cannot loot it the second. You would have already taken the key from the prisoner. It's not a glitch. RtO also gives you a second chance to get dog if you missed it the first time, but you can't recruit two dogs.

If you're really nice, you can feed the prisoner without getting the key, in which case, you get the key from his corpse also. Think of it this way....if you looted the chest the first time, the mages find out after the fact, realize that it's not a very secure chest, and changed the locks. So your old key no longer works.

Look at the stupid excuses that some people make to justify an irritating glitch of the game... ooohh "the mages..., realize that it´s not a very secure chest..." but the worst is "the darkspawn have looted the unlocked chest". Please people stop giving the AI or the NPCs brains that they don´t have to lie to yourselves that there is no glitch.

While I agree that it is probably a glitch, there is an argument to be made for some mean and nasty evil pre-planning on this one. If you have Alistair in your party when you first talk to the prisoner, and get him food but never ask for the key (ie: why should I help you), you get +3 relationship points from Alistair. If you get the key, Alistar is kinda grossed out by where it came from and you only get +1. So all in all, the best stats and items comes from helping the prisoner for no benefit (+3), then getting the key in RtO and getting better items for it. Also, if this were a glitch they intend to fix, i figure that they would have fixed it by the time the PS3 dlc came out much delayed, being that people have been grumbling about this "glitch" for the last few months and the dlc for PS3 only came out yesterday.

I think Gen.Jake doesn't have a mommy, and is taking out his confused unhappiness on the game.

It is annoying, glitch or not. And if I already looted it and they changed the locks then there should still be a key somewhere on a dead mage. And if the mage didnt die in the original battle why didnt she go and get her stuff from the chest?

You've missed the point completely mate ...there is NOT a second dog, but there is a second chest ...hence it is a glitch!
