Mark Rein, July 2009:

"Over half the users who played Gears of War 2 so far do not have HDTVs.
I think that tells you there are still a lot of people making the leap to HD."

Based on the data the 360 transmits back to MS over Live, on which video output it's using.

You're going off that Eurogamer article with Epic and what that article neglects to mention is that the data was at Gears Of War 2 launch back in the fall of 08. There is also lots of debate as to if that is global or European numbers. Other sites have stated that it was EU numbers only. Add to that, the the article itself was written back in the summer of 09.

At best that is two shopping/holiday seasons of old data, at worst it's only one. Still, either way old data is old and Gears is played by a heck of a lot more little kids in their bedrooms than Mass Effect. The markets are totally different.

I am sure there are many people of all age groups who are gamers playing this game. I saw a number of parents picking up this game on the release date picking up this game for their children. How do I know? I talked to them while waiting in line.

Also, the EU is a major market for this game, that is why it was released there the same week. It is doubtful that they would make the text size different in different markets.

I've got an HD TV and the writing is still pretty small... i'm not 8, i don't want to have to play 5 feet from the TV. I like all the ppl saying HD tv's are not expensive, as 90% of the time it's their parents that purchased them...

32" cost me $350. I can read the text perfectly. Only times that it is unlegible is when the text is over something in the background that is white, or a color thereof.

There are games like BanjoKazooie Nuts and Bolts that had considerably small text and needed a fix. But this game only needs a background behind the text like the first game instead of it floating in the air.

You fail to mention how close you are sitting to the TV...

ME1 didn't need a background behind the text, and you could see it clearly on any TV. A background like a box or circle behind the text would take away from the cinematic feel... You might as well be playing a game BanjoKazooie Nuts and Bolts...

Well let's see. I have a chair on the other side of the room I sit in to play, so about 11 feet.  Now look, if you are going to complain about the text being too small, then don't say "a background would take away from the cinematic feel" If you won't take what you can get then the text isn't bothering you that much at all.

I've worked in graphic design (magazine and print) for a long, long time and I'm painfully aware of type readability issues, I've dealt with them on a daily basis for half my life. So TV definition issues aside, the ME 2 designers simply set the majority of the text way too small per industry standards.

The font size they used had nothing to do aesthetics or style of the game. Even if it did, it's still their responsibility to know the recommended viewing distances for SD - HD TV's and design accordingly. They simply didn't do it. http://www.thebestpl...ewing-distance/ I'm sure the issue was raised repeatedly during development but it wasn't fixed because of deadlines and cost.

People don't like to hear they've made a mistake or did a bad job but... the ME2 graphic designers messed this up pretty bad. But when you work under tight deadlines the final results are almost always not up to your standards. Sad but true.

^^^I support this comment and his/her opinions. Most likely it happened exactly as cobain said it did; it was an issue, but was likely deemed low on the priorities list, and ended up not getting the needed attention before launch. All that 360 users can do is hope for a patch that addresses this issue. Personally, I have no problem (not to gloat) as I am playing on a 50" panasonic v10 and the game looks beautiful.

My problem is with the freaking help pop-up messages that keep occuring even though I'm playing on veteran and am already at least 2 hours into the game. Not to mention, not being able to set your gun back to regular ammo type if not purely for cosmetic's sake.

I brought this up to the developers at my job, and they asked if any of the text was outlined at all. I am going to have to check when I get home, as I do not remember. If anyone is playing this now, could you tell me if the text is outlined?

A text colour change would be nice too, when playing on a SDTV I can't see white text on a white background, and no, I can't buy a HDTV I had to buy a new xbox

The text is outlined, slightly

I think its a grey blue mixture, very faint on a SDTV, virtually non existant

Thank you. We were just going over visibility design, as we are all gamers and there a number of people at my job looking to get this title. Many are saying they are going to rent it first after hearing of the whole readability thing.

? You make no sense. I posted a link to a screen
cap of the first game didn't require a background behind the txt. Why should I
have to "take what I can get?". I'm happy you have no problems seeing
the text, but I'm pretty glad you don't work for me as your "put a
background box behind it, and accept it" is pretty half-assed.

You forget that I am the consumer; I'm paying $80
for a product. If it's shipping with problems, then I’ll do what others have
suggested and just rent it first next time, and maybe not purchase it. I really enjoy
ME2, but this is a problem that has disappointed me and ruins game play. In the
first game I read most, if not all of the Codex, and now I couldn't be bothered
to even read the informational alerts that even pop up. I'm pretty sure half of
the story is lost as I choose now to hit X to skip most of the dialogue and
power through most of the decision wheels, not really caring what is being
written but really just choosing Top/Right for options that should be Paragon.

Don't sit all the way across the room from your television.  I've noticed some people complaining that they can't see the text when they sit close to ten feet away.  If i was ten feet away from my television, I probably couldn't tell what game I was playing.  There's no need to place your chair on the complete opposite side of the room.  Just move closer.

(And I wouldn't expect to be able to read anything on an SDTV, either.  HDTV's are definitely worth it.)

So what Bioware is telling me is that although a game like Banjo-Kazooie can update it's text and make it larger, there is no way for them to fix it on this?

Ten feet isn't as far as you seem to think it is. I have a SDTV, the money I would need to buy a HDTV goes to things like bills and food, and I can actually see the words on screen. Because I sit eight feet away and have better than 20/20 vision.

Rare fixed their problem. BioWare could do the same.

Well I can definitely relate to the bills and food thing.  It certainly wouldn't hurt if they made the text size scalable (or whatever the word is I'm looking for >.>).  From what I've read though, it seems they're fine with it the way it is.  There's also a Mass Effect wiki if you're having trouble reading things on the codex and want to read more about the ME universe.

I agree with you (speak English, so everyone can understand ^^ ).

We're discussing about it here:

social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/107/index/1081158

you can find some answers from Jesse Houston, a Bioware team member, that was kind enough to tell us why it is so difficult to address this problem, and what they're trying to do.

Ad ogni modo fa piacere vedere altri italiani su questo forum  mi sento meno solo, adesso.

It's great how the people with HD's (The haves) get to sit so high on that pedastool and look down on us without HD TV's (the losers/suckers/cheapskates/obsoletes)

It must be nice to have that much money. I wouldn't know. I had to get a 2nd job just to get my xbox 360 (arcade version...the cheapest one their is). My TV is an old hand me down from my family. No QQ, just telling it like it is.

You know, some of us can't afford Hybrid cars either. Does that mean the gas station is going to turn us away because we are outdated?

If the 360 was sold only with HD cables and said HD only, then I understand. But I bought my 360 with AVI component cables that were included.

As for the text update. They (Bioware) say it is because they are only allowed 4mb updates. Ummm, hello? No 7th generation game is going to have a 4mb update limit. That's ridiculous. Have an update that if you have a hard drive you can download it. Obviously the 360 native hard drive space without an attachable drive is probably close to nil, so it makes sense that you need a HDD for large updates.

I'm just having a hard time seeing Bioware not get it's way with Microsoft when:

1. They originally made an exclusive deal with Microsoft to launch Mass Effect, which I'm sure made them a lot of close friends that Microsoft that would help them with problems.

2. They are one of the most successful game Devs whose owners are the LARGEST game publishing company in the world.

If those 2 things can't get you the special access and clout you need to deliver for the fans while making exceptions to some Microsoft policies, then I guess Bioware isn't as influential in the gaming business as I originally thought...

If you are using a standard def tv that has a SCART socket then get an RGB SCART lead.
They make hell of a difference with games with small text.

Before I upgraded to HD I used to have problems reading the text in some games especially dead rising. Bought and RGB SCART and suddenly the smallest text was readable.

THANK YOU for actually offering a solution.
