Okay so, I kept getting this message whenever I tried to import a character while signed into my LIVE profile. I would sign out and play the game but then whenever I'd try to sign back in in order to save, the game would give me that same error message.
So, out of desperation I got a friend with a copy of the game to help me out and it so happened that when I used his copy of the game to play, everything worked fine. No error message, no sign in issues.
Went home to see if maybe the game would work now with my copy and lo and behold it does.
Conclusion? There's something corrupted on my disc that prevents me (and others with this same issue) from starting a new game with an imported character, but once the game is started without that issue even the corrupted discs work fine.
I'm still going back to the store and getting it exchanged because this is just ridiculous and I'd rather not have this same problem the next time I try to start a new game.

Yes, I've got this same problem. Please Bioware, patch this (if possible)! Gonna try and start it with my brother's disc tomorrow, hopefully that will be the end of it.

I've got the same problem. I had no problems on day of release, but today no can do... :-(

Happened to me too at some point, I just unplugged my ethernet cable and imported and plugged back in after Freedom's Progress.
