Totally mainstreamed, but it's not a bad thing.... only thing is, it rides the fence between being an RPG and a Shooter so much that I feel like there are failing points on both sides, and the arguments on these forums prove it....

So here's what Mass3 needs:

1. An option at the beginning: (I only played the 10 day trial... but doesn't WOW do something similar?)
a) RPG: loot, full weapon and armor customization, the original overheat ammo system, the Mass2 planet scan system, and a micro-manageable level system (to 50 or 60)
B) RPG shooter: a broad choice of weapons (with upgrades), ME2 armor upgrade system, the ME2 ammo system (or maybe even a choice between the two), a color coded or topographical planet scan system, and a mega-manageable level system (to 20 or 30)
c) Shooter: a minimal (yet extremely varied) choice of weapons, the ME2 ammo system, a color coded or topographical planet scan system, and an auto level system

2. The radar on your HUD.... what good is a radar if it's not in real-time on your HUD?

3. More mappable hot buttons, even (and especially) on X360.... (ie) double clicking the d-pad for more squad commands, make trigger near an enemy the mele again and make B mappable... and why not make the switch between combat mode and explore mode completely automatic (per the radar) and make 'back' mappable (or bring back grenades?)

4. Don't change ANYTHING about the story and convo modes... the only exception being the elevators.... yeah they were annoying, but the dialogue on them was invaluable and that was a lot better than a silent load screen.... this was a staple of Mass1

Anything I missed? Anything you disagree with? Comment please....

Loot, or more specifically, inventory management is an incredibly annoying part of RPG games. The system in ME2 is much more brilliant. Loot / buy schematics, choose on sliders which pieces to use. It also allows for much greater customization in looks (although they fell short on options, only 3 or 4 of each was sucky)

Map system was fine. If you get lost or are unclear on where you are going on a quest, that is the fault of the quest writing / design, not the maps. They did a pretty good job directing you except for a few on the citadel (that annoying Chit quest)

More hotkeys wasn't an issue... because I played it on the proper system.. PC :)

edit..

Overall, the level of polish and finish for this game makes me NOT believe it's an EA title.

uh why don't people get this little fact:

EA WAS THE PUBLISHER AND NOT THE DEVELOPER

these are two totally diffrent things

Agree...with most.

All I have to say is that ME3 would be better to do the best of both worlds/games. Ok, we get it BW, the shooting aspect is FAR better now, so.. how about less 'streamlining' and more customization, starting with squad armor? lol

Very much agree with thread title BTW. Hopefully Bioware can now focus (even) more on the story and satisfying fans of every EXISTING character instead of just filling up a roster of new squadmates (ugh).

I'm an RPG gamer at heart, so i might have a slight bias but here's my opinion.

They didn't need to get rid of things that weren't working perfectly, just redesign them. For example the mako wasn't working to hott for planetary exploration in the first, but that doesnt' mean cut it from the game, just rework the map designs and the controls of the vehicle. Make it less used but still have some fun with it.

I liked having loot and items to pick up. I really did like the new way you could load out your character, all I think thehy need to do is add in 15-20 more options for each category (head gloves, legs, etc) and then give you the ability to equip your squad with that gear as well.

I'd also like to see 3-5 more options for each weapon, with different specialities for each. that way it's not just "once you get the upgraded version you use that" it's, "ok im fighting geth on insane, i need this smg, not the one i was using against collectors before".

Those few changes right there would have taken the game from great, to unbelievably amazing, for me.

but because they were the publisher they get a good amount of say in what happens in the title, just like how microsoft initially distributed the game an xbox exclusive.... with no publisher there is no game, so what EA says goes... and it's clear in this game they said streamline

that's exactly what I'm saying.... why not give the option for HOW you want to play the game outright?

lol @ supremacy... i know lets go back 2 ME1 and have 2 reduce items to omni gel every fight for 10 minutes. that was so amazing lawl. i mean lets just have the lvl cap at lvl 200, give over 40 pieces of armor (rings for each finger, 3 ear piercings, 5 biotic implants, etc). we need this to be more of a super micro annoying managable rpg like jrpgs. actually ME3 shud just copy old FF's.

lol ****ing 12 yr olds

wrong again kid. publishers do just what it says: publish. they dont have any say on game design. at all. ever. they say 'ya we'll publish it' or 'no we wont publish it'. and then they market the game to the public, hence the term 'publish'. lol ****ing kid

wtf are you talking about..... EA BOUGHT Bioware.... Bioware is officially EA's ****.... they can tell them to do whatever they want.... and why are you against options? I'm just saying that there should be a few options between micro-manage for Mass1 fans and 0-manage for shooter fans.... how does that make me a kid? my ****s big enough for you to suck it ****

They can say "We won't publish it with x in it."

I'm not saying they did, but I'm definately not saying they didn't.

Publishers will refuse to publish books if they don't like some of the concepts. Either you swap publishers, talk it out or remove the offensive material. Swapping publishers is kinda hard when they own you.

Would have liked a few more armor options myself.

I would really like to see them apply the concept of the new armor system to the weapons. Researching weapon upgrades was fine but I think it would be quite fun if you could outfit each of your weapons like you can with your armor.

i'm not saying have an inventory system. all i'm saying is the were too few choices. while playing as a soldier, we were told it was the best class for guns, but yet the most guns are heavy weapons.

just like the armor pieces, i only have a few of those.

You're kinda comparing apples to oranges.... just because book publishers also hire editors to fix the original writer's words to make it more sellable.... but as far as apples to apples go.... please note that this game has two credited head writers as the first just had one

I missed squad armor, character armor and weapons etc. In the old game you modded armor and weapons to customize it and it showed which guns were better etc. This was highly dumbed down.

do you WORK for EA??

hmmmm.... bioware sells it's soul to EA and then the lead writer leaves (even if that's true, I haven't heard that at all, which I feel like would be big news amongst the mass effect crowd).... that doesn't sound like a big change to you? Drew Karpyshyn wrote BOOKS on this universe... if he left because of what EA did to his baby then I fully support him because this game (gameplay wise) is COMPLETELY different from mass1

it isn't a question of communism being executed properly as, usually, it is. the problem is people. people are greedy. greed is the #1 killer of communism.

in all seriousness though I really did like the loadout system. Would have liked to see more gear drop. Larger variety of weapons and armor, greater customization, and a better squad-wide customization (superficial or otherwise)
