9 with no heavy weapons on insanity. 19 was my best on other playthroughs.

If you have Cain, it isn't that hard to get (almost) every crate

I got 18 on Insanity with a Vanguard. I explained how it's done step by step in another thread.

I tried the Cain technique, which basically consisted of firing the Cain as soon as i saw the first Mech, and it netted me 3 dead Mechs and all 20 crates intact, instantly. Took about... say, 7 seconds (far easier than my first attempt with using a Sniper).
Somewhat counter-intuitive that the Cain doesn't damage a single crate, but there you have it.
Note: This was on Hardcore, I believe. Don't know how it carries over to Insanity, but it should work fairly well there too, I would assume.

16 on Insanity with a Solider. Set all the special ammos before heading in and shot it to hell with the Viper. Had Garrus and Zaeed for Overload and Inferno Grenade, as well as firepower. Died a good few times trying to storm all the mechs, so it took a bit of practice.

Seen a video on Youtube saving 16 on Insanity. Switching between Team Disruptor ammo and AP ammo was the key.
