i would like a spear, but i don't think they have spears in this game.
as far as swords go, i would be thinking a long sword with a 2 handed grip or greatsword with a ricasso, but it really wouldn't matter becasue this game doesn't have such detail with techniques that a ricasso or thrusting blade would matter. (despite the obvious depiction of plated armors in the videos so far).
i would want it undecorated with a fuller, disc pommel and straight crossguard with no design or frills.
I feel ya brotha'. We think alike when it comes to weapons. Typical fantasy swords are ridiculous. A sword is a tool for killing people. It looks best when it looks like what it is.

That's a good looking sword.
Reasonably priced and historically accurate. They have some fantasy swords but overall decent site.

I'm with you both. Granted, fantasy is fantasy, but I think it would be great to start seeing medieval-based fantasy RPGs really incoporating the true martial fighting methods actually used by the masters back in the day. For that matter, I wouldn't say a sword is just a tool for killing people, but the style around the use of a longsword, for example, was about more than simply hacking-and-slashing, of course. Especially against plate armor, as you mention. Grappling, working against the bind, strong and weak forces, half-swording (gripping the blade with one hand or on the ricasso for better control, which did happen for those that doubt) could all work just as well as skills in the RPG context.
Me? My perfect weapon would be a longsword. That's the tl;dr answer.
A longsword (double-edged blade) of high carbon steel construction, with a cruciform crossguard and oval-shaped, leather-wrapped hilt. Being a longsword (AKA hand-and-a-half), the hilt has enough room for the use of one or primarily both hands. The crossguard would be mostly straight, but curve slightly up (in the direction of the blade) at each end. The pommel would be a smooth, pear or egg shape to facilitate an easy grip. It would be best classified as an Oakeshotte Type XIII blade, where the edges of the blade run mostly parallel until ending in a rounded tip. The cross-section would be a lenticular design, effective at cutting with less air resistance, with the fuller (AKA blood groove) running about half the length of the blade.
Edit:
I know I'm probably going to be flamed for this, but I don't mean to be a douche when I say:

. Or my favorite sword if there is a 1H variety of it.......The Katana.

You might be going for the term wakizashi. Fantasy RPGs like Oblivion have perpetuated the wrong terms for these weapons, though they are subject to some debate. A Katana could technically be easily viable for one-handed use, but then you're missing out on the real mechanics behind it. Of course, this is all in the realm of fantasy so
I'll shut up now
