I can't select a piece of code in the data pad hacking thing. When I press space nothing happens.  I can move the selected code segment around no problem, I just can't choose one!

I've rebound keys, and F is set to storm/cover/vault or whatever it is, but F also does nothing. I've tried resetting my key bindings to default, and space still does nothing (EDIT: see below- quitting and relaunching game does make reset keys work).

Don't want to play until I can hack data pads, as I want to hear the full story! :(

OS is Windows 7, 64-bit. Installed Intellitype keyboard drivers for my Microsoft Comfy Curve 2000, but that made no difference.

Looks like a bug to me. If I reset keys, then quit ME2 and re-launch it everything is fine (space bar now selects code segments). If I rebind space to move forward, and bind f to storm/cover/vault then f does not work and neither does space. :(

That bypass works for me.

After resetting the keybinds I restarted the game and reassigned the keys to my standard layout, but only using the second slots (leaving the original layout untouched). This way SPACE still works while hacking.

I've given up, and am leaving space bound to use/cover/vault. I can change any of the other keys and it's fine. Hopefully this will be fixed in the first patch!

Argh - now I can't place the monument in the Normandy mission. :(

I've given up on setting my own keys, and will just suffer the mental trauma of using the defaults. The bugs are just too annoying otherwise.

One more to the bunch.

This cannot be serious. I haven't seen a game released in the last 5 years prompting me to press the default buttons, instead of the remaps, in the tutorial.

I am particularly intrigued by the fact that this seems like such a minor problem--are we really the only people who rebind our keys? I have been using "space" as "move back" since Duke Nukem 3D came out, and I have never had it break a game before now. This makes no sense.

I thought I was missing something, I'm like...How do I select the segment.

I'm having the same problem as well. Like Quarex above, I've been using spacebar to move back for as long as I've been playing shooters. This only affects the hacking mini game for me but it's rather annoying to rebind the "use" key back to spacebar, save, then reload just to hack a datapad each and every time. This seems like a really small binding issue/bug that I'm hoping will be fixed in a patch.

The entire game is fairly buggy and seemingly random on which is broken for whom. I've used a custom key layout since I discovered using the mouse in Quake 1 and have had no issue with the key bindings. Granted I've always used Spacebar for sprinting anyways so I left that at the default, so maybe it's just Spacebar (though the OP referenced F as well).

Does it just not work at all or is that you were specifically pressing [F]? It's the melee button that actually triggers if that helps at all (mine is not bound to F, it's bound to my thumb mouse and it worked fine for me).

Weird. I switched space and shift around, and they both worked fine as soon as I remapped them.

I have a suggested easy workaround for you folks. Set things back to default to make it work as BigGunna described, then remap all your keys back to your preferred keys except Space, to make sure it still works. Then remap Space using this app and something like the following script:

AutoHotKey dot com

Script:

Space::RCtrl

RCtrl::Space

The patch 1.01 is supposed to fix this issue. Unfortunately, I have found out that not all functionality associated to Space is remapped: dialog escaping is still mapped there, no matter what you do.

For the time being, I think I'll stick to the AutoHotKey solution (thanks, theskeels). There's a way to make the script work only when Mass Effect 2's window is active, but I haven't been able to work that out yet.

By the way, tutorials still show the default keys. There's no change on this front.

As Qaurez and Saber Prime wrote above, I also use the space key to move backwards. If I am correct, what they are using is the "Quake Championship" key configuration. Basically it goes like this:

Up - Right Mouse
Down - Space
Left - B
Right - N
Duck - M (ME2 = walk)
Jump - Comma (ME2 = regroup squad)
Use - Period (ME2 = Holster Weapon)
Shoot - Left Mouse

Thats the basics, your left hand's fingers are aligned on B, N, M, and Comma, you do not use your thumb to press Space, but instead move one of your unused fingers (middle finger for example) to press.

For more advanced games here is how the rest of the setup goes:

Melee / Sniper Zoom - Middle Mouse Click
Scroll Weapons - Middle Mouse Scroll
Zoom Aim / Focus - Right Alt
FlashLight / NightVision - V and C (ME2 = Send Henchman 1 and 2)
Throw Grenade - Slash (or K in games without alternate fire modes)
Sprint  - J (ME2 = Use, Cover and Sprint)
Specials / Alternate Fires -  K (ME2 = Command View)
Ammo & Grenade Types - L, Semi Colon and Apostrophe (ME2, L = Map, others not used)
Walk - Right Shift (in ME2 using M since there is no Duck command)
Inventory / Interact (other than Use) - Enter
Holster Weapon - Right Control (ME2 using Comma, since there is no Jump command)

More keys and possible uses:

I = Inventory
O = Objectives
P = Pause
[ and ] = scroll items
; and ' = select ammo/grenade types
G or H = Use Health
X or Z = Camera related stuff
Y = talk
U = team talk
E and R = reload (its on the other side of the keyboard so set both E and R for reload, in case you miss one).

I just installed the V1.01 patch and it fixed the issue where I can now hack using my remapped Use key!

Also for people who re-map their keys, when you need to use the "Leave World" command it should be whatever you set Melee to (usually Middle Mouse click). I set Leave World to "Z" but it didn't work, but strangely Melee does :blink:
