The Revenant has double the damage of the base assault rifle, with double the mag size, so it is clearly not junk. Unless you are spraying it at long-range.
Is it possible to obtain both Revenant and Widow eventually?

Everyone seems to think DLC is the answer to all of the "problems" on this game. Not thinking critically there.
Yeah, there's also this thing called a patch.

One of my few complaints with this game is in the lack of variety in weaponry, and doing away with the old mod-system. Personally I think they need to either A) add some new weapons in DLC, patches or what have you, and
adjust the Revenant, Widow, and Claymore to allow you to grab one per play-through.
Just my 2 cents

Adding weapons per play through would be awesome; The way it worked out, I was surprised that you couldn't. Does it hurt balance so much to allow it? The class specific boni(yes! bonus plural) do enough to keep class feel/balance intact.

You lose all weapons in NG+, so no. Best as can be done is DLC, or cheating that will most likely only work on PC.
What's the cheat?

The Widow isn't quite as effective on a Soldier as it is on an Infiltrator, so I'd say to take the Revenant if you're a Soldier. On an Infiltrator, though, the Widow is downright game-breaking. You can 3-shot bosses with it if you use an ammo power and Assassination Cloak.

Im playing as a soldier with the widow and hightened adreanline rush, slowing time down for a headshot works great. It is a 1 shot kill on insanity (provied its a headshot) without any upgrades, im guessing that pwering it up will seriously make it the ultimate sniper. I use ARs a lot but i haven't tried the revenant (i didnt know that that was the adv. weapon trainig, but i dont regret my choice). Collectors and geth rifles work well on pretty much any enemy if you use the right ammo powers. It takes 4 shots for habringers and semi-bosses like that. Quite a bit more for other real bosses (such as praetorians)

I have all three and every class has the soldiers weapon options and layout. I've played the game through legit over and over, now it's time to have some fun.
Sentinel + Revenant = Good Times!

i think on my next play i'll be a soldier and take the revenant. i love the widow but the cloak for the infiltrator is what makes it so amazing. without cloak i might as well unleash a ridiculous amount of bullets.

with all the packs coming out they should fix this so you can pick up another weapon your next play through. wont unbalance the game imo.

On my second playthrough with my soldier, I wasn't able to pick up a second weapon. You apparently get one chance to pick one weapon. Your choices are based on whether you have the ability to use each weapon type. A class that cannot use assault rifles for instance cannot pick the Revenant, but they can pick up Assault Rifle training which allows them to use all available assault rifle types.
In my experience though, the best class + weapon choice was the Vanguard. Vanguard + Sniper Rifle. Amazingly powerful.

When I played through on my soldier I picked the Revenant. Then I played through again on Hardcore to get the pulse rifle (yes I didn't know I could just changed difficulties on my first go round), when I got to the "get new weapon/training" it wasn't selectable. So as my soldier I wasn't able to upgrade any other weapon. As my Vanguard, I chose sniper training, and on my insane play through, again I got to that part and found it no longer selectable. So once you have selected for a toon, you're stuck with your choice.
