To anyone who has read the Song of Ice and Fire series, have you noticed the similarities to DA:O? Here's a couple I've noticed:

The Grey Wardens are very similar to the Night's Watch.

The people of the wilds are very similar to Wildlings.

I've only gotten just beyond Lothering. Has anyone noticed other similarities?

:)

Those are a good series of books that I read over the summer but, the similarities seem a touch vague to me in the game. This is good however, because while playing Mass Effect I was getting very annoyed at the obvious and blatant classic sci-fi rip-offs that formed the "baddies" in that game.

Now if the Grey Wardens had erected a huge traveling "Great China" wall and actually survived the opening battle. I might see your point.

The ancient order of misunderstood guardians is pretty classic, from Tolkien's Istari to the Magi of the Mummy movies.

Mysterious barbarians from outside of civilization are a staple of the literature too.

Sure, you can find similarities between these two specific works if you go looking for them, but that's just because they're drawing on the same general set of fantasy/mythology archetypes.

Yeah, some of the references in Mass Effect were directly lifted from a Frank Herbert book.

True. I guess I'm just drawing similarities to Ice and Fire because I'm still reading the series, and thus the imagery is fresh in my mind. But, yes there are similar archetypes which didn't originate with the Ice and Fire series.

I was thinking about ice and fire also, but then it also heavily reminds me of LOTR. The bottom line is, there is nothing new under the sun, just a re varnishing of the old tales.

I read a while back in an article that the Devs used it as an inspiration for the game, so yes, there are parallels to the books.

Anyone noticed the Ser's? :D

I just started reading the series as well, on book 2 at the moment and its quite good. I can agree on the similarities and it makes me love both the book and this game even more.

I agree, the series is great. The game and the series seem to compliment each other.

What this game really reminds me of is the Wheel of time series. Just take the things that effect male mages there and apply it to all mages here. The evil blight is pretty much the same. Heck, theres even a betraying b*stard named loghain (even if the books spell it differently). Similiar themes of civil wars and political intrigue as evil comes upon the land, etc., etc.
