Preface: I had zero problems (except for a DLC not installing properly) and was able to get all the way to the "final" mission. Specifically, I was on the section where you've had the last "big" decision cutscene with Illusive Man and you have to start fighting the final boss.

I saved and came back later to get back in and I crashed to desktop at the "Press any key" screen.

I have subsequently saved my savegame profile elsewhere, uninstalled, and reinstalled the game numerous times via Steam. This has accomplished nothing.

No matter what I do, I can no longer get beyond the "Press any key" screen. I hit a key, the screen fades out and then there's a momentary stutter then the Windows alert box pops up to inform me that "Mass Effect 2 has stopped working"

Relevant Info:
Vista Home Premium 64
Intel Core i7 920
6GB Tri-channel RAM
2x nVidia GTX260 OCs in SLI
Steam Digital Deluxe Edition of ME2
DX10

PLEASE HELP!

Uninstalling the DLC didn't seem to help.

Wondering at this point if it's some sort of error in common/Windows files that might have been corrupted somehow by the game or the installer. Noticed that on first install, DirectX setup runs via Steam, but subsequent installs, despite uninstalling prior, don't have the DX setup run.

Keep in mind, of course, that I have DX10 and that every new game (or fresh install of an old game) has almost always tried to run a DX installer upon first play and doesn't seem to bother with version checking before going into the "Installing DirectX" routine.

Not a Steam issue. It's something with your system.

I wasn't implying that it was a Steam issue, however several "work-arounds" have been mentioned and they all involve installs from the CDs. As this is not an option, those of us with the Steam (or other digital download) versions need a solution.

ok i my mass effect 2 worked now maybe it help you guys too

i put some save files in a backup folder and test which files are bugged

after long testing i saw that the older that the older savefiles working

for example:save_0063.pcsav -> save_0119.pcsav work fine only the Save_0062.pcsav file is bugged

so i remove this bugged file and the game work:) (the latest save work also!)

you can find these files @ C:\\Users\\"name"\\Documents\\BioWare\\Mass Effect 2\\Save\\"name"

Yep, it's a save issue. Backup your Save folder and then find out by trial and error which save files work for you. Then delete the rest of the save files from the folder leaving only the working one(s). Not sure what is causing this though...
