I didn't lose anyone, and had everyone loyal but Jack. I used Tali as the tech spec, Garrus as the second squad leader (twice), and Samara as the biotic. I asked Jacob to escort the survivors and brought Miranda and Grunt as my teammates.

I'm not clear on why what happened for me happened.

I used Thane for the vents, and he died from a rocket to the face. He was loyal, but I never used him much.

I used Jacob to escort the crew back to the ship. He was loyal, and I hadn't used him much, and was fine.

I used Jack as the biotic, and she was fine. She was loyal.

I used Miranda as the team leader both times. The second time, when we were closing the doors it looked like she got shot, but she was fine. Then at the end of the game, she was dead, and I don't know how. At one point I had her loyalty, but lost it when I sided with Jack in their fight.

Everyone was loyal except Zaeed and Miranda, and I'd done everyone's personal upgrade.

I guess it was loyalty that got Miranda killed, but it's odd that it didn't show me when or how she died. And I don't know why Thane died. Can anyone shed some light?

. My friend says he lost seven crew members. Two when the Normandy crashes, and literally everyone he assigned to do something thereafter. I find that pretty hilarious to be honest.

They died in the crash? Did he not upgrade his ship or something? I've been wondering what happen if you didn't fully upgrade it.

I lost Mordin - the final boss must have a time limit, or something, don't understand why he died.

Something that would have annoyed a lot of 'fans' but I think would have been very interesting is to have characters die because they were loyal, by sacrificing themselves or something, but maybe avert that if another squad member is loyal enough to help them, so they don't die. Basically it seems like loyalty was plugged into the equation that decided the outcome, but didn't actually play any role in how the events played out.

Now that is a good idea. I agree it would have annoyed some, but "darker" and "edgier" were major themes for this game. More stuff like this, and more choices (like the BDtS ending in ME1) where there really is no "right" or "good" option, just Paragon and Renegade approaches.

Any passing devs, please consider twists like this for ME3.

Thane died because he was too slow opening the doors. You need a tech specialist for that section.

Not sure about Miranda though.

The possibility that someone can die is fine, but I don't like it when someone essentially has to die because that cheapens it. I liked how in this game, if someone died.. it was your fault.

Just finished my first playthrough today, only SQUAD casualty was Zaeed. Turns out, he's not such a good leader (picked him to lead the squad for the second part). I had both Miranda and Legion with me in my squad for the whole run and didn't have any problems. My entire crew except for Chakwas died though, because I didn't know that there was a real-time time limit to get to the collector ship. It was gut wrenching to watch my dear Ms. Chambers getting liquified.

I lost Tali (laughed cause it was my intention) and Legion died. Kinda ironic that they were the ones to die cause of their history. crazy thing is though Legion died when the ship was being attacked by the collector ship, there was an explosion and legion was caught in it. Felt bad about it since i liked legion. Oh and i lost the entire crew.

I had everyone survive on my first playthrough, including the crew but that was because I went into the omega 4 relay immediately after the crew was abducted.

I think part of how you lose people is if you take too long on moving through areas. I.E. in the first area where you need a tech expert, You need to be able to unlock the blockages in the pipe as quickly as possible.

I used Legion for the tunnels but I would've use Tali otherwise. I used Garrus to lead the other team. Then on the swarm part, I had Jack be the biotic shielder and Garrus to lead the other team again.

Of course, on my second attempt though, I didn't go into the relay immediately and so lost the normandy crew because I didn't realize there was an actual timer on that but had the entire crew survive again.

I think it's a matter of how fast you go through the final mission itself, loyalty of the party members, and if your ship/party members are fully upgraded or not.

On my attempts I had almost all of the upgrades and picked wisely on my teams/assignments, and went through the mission at a decent pace without stopping if i can help it.

For the Techie part, It's mentioned that it's hot in there by the person assigned to that role and then there is the time limit on when you can hit the valve to have your techie proceed further along. I went with the ones that were most suitable for that kind of hazard, Legion and Tali.

For the Biotic part, I went with the one I thought of as the strongest biotic, Jack or Samara really, Don't know if Jacob or Miranda would do as well as those two.

Thane died because he's not a tech expert, send legion or tali in vents. Miranda died because of lack of loyalty I'm guessing. For me garrus got shot in the same role but survived at end of game but I had his loyalty.

Is there really a timer for the crew or does it just matter if you do another mission first? I waited like.. an hour.. because I forgot to turn it off when I went to go eat and the crew still lived.

I just finished it first time. Legion died closing the door, and it REALLY bugged me. Very powerful writing, that I can care about a character enough after only having had him for two hours or so. (I loved bringing him to Tali's trial though. That was a riot.)

I put Zaeed in charge of the fireteam both times, since I figured, hell, the guy used to lead the Blue Suns, he can lead, right? No. So he died after the second reunion.

Both of those I was fine with. But then Mordin died, just totally randomly, in that final battle. Seriously Bio? Just random deaths? Everyone makes it except random character X? I had all upgraded, all loyalties, etc. Ugh. I hate random crap.

Still, 3 dead party members for my "I don't give a crap about anything except stopping the (BLEEEP) Reapers" renegade Shep seems not too bad.

just mordin and grunt.....i felt bad too because it just seemed soo random i thought that mordin could do it because well........he's mordin...and grunt died because i thought he could lead the diversion team during the jack escort part.......for the exact same reason and entire crew died.....i felt like i had to secure legions loyalty and regain mirandas loyalty and i survived .....didint exactly expect to do so good..oh it was my first playthrough

Completed it yesterday. Had Garrus and Thane dying, sadly.
Both of which were very loyal but due to unfortunate events they did not survive.
Garrus was chosen as my tech specialist, seemed a solid choice... in the end the door killed him so to speak.
Thane died because Miranda couldn't hold the biotic sphere... Next time I'll pick Samara for that, which I didn't recruit in this one... thought it would be more original that way. :P

Haven't you read anything here? Yes you have to upgrade your ship.

As for me..I lost Thane on my first playthrough, I chose him as a tech specialist (Bad bad decision)

Second playthrough, I lost Mordin and I don't know why, he was loyal, and upgraded all the way.

I was wondering though, in the mission you have a decision to make, either they stay behind you to cover you, or they go to the ship. ( I think I'm not sure, I always tell them to stay behind). Do you guys think it affected Mordin's death? All I remember of the scene is Jack telling me they're killing them by the dozens and behind her you see Mordin get shot in the face.

First playthrough - Tali died, for some unexplainable reason. She was loyal, upgrades were in order, and she survived the Vents. I didn't even know she was died until I saw Collectors scurrying around her body. "WTF?" was my reaction, because she was available for me to take with into the final confrontation. Could she have somehow died during the barricade attack? If so, what factors into that? Just seemed like chance. It was so random.
