I would be fine with Thane but I do not think a male shep can romance him. Would be nice though

I don't care how anyone takes this. I still feel homosexuality should be kept behind closed doors. I don't want it ''in my face''. There is a reason men and women have interlocking parts, you know. If you want to be gay? Fine, that's your prerogative, don't make it mine.

How on earth is it in your face by being in game.

You don't have to choose the option you know. Just like you can choose to be paragon, renegade or go after any of the straight LIs.

Unless you're telling me you don't have mental capacity to avoid starting a relationship with a game character the same gender as your Commander Shepard. <_<

Ok well unless you prusue the romance option it's not gonna be in your face, and if you think someone not hiding who they are is offensive, then grow up.

Dragon Age was buyed by the majority and all relationships were clear BEFORE release. Dragon Age is one of the best selled fantasy rpgs ever. Homosexuality didn`t hurt the sales, maybe it even pushed them. Who really concerns about some idios who make a big deal about genitals, ****** and nipples? No one does. You can see all of that every day in Hustler and Playboy and they are in stores since decades.

Kingdom for an Ignore-option!

Seriously people, if you don't care or it bothers you, just stay out of the thread. Why are people so eager to gather in threads that should be completely irrelevant to them, only to insult and belittle those to who it actually matters?

Am I the only one here who isn't just thinking about himself, and actually wants everybody to have a full, enjoyable gaming experience regardless of orientation? I wish I could be amused by the idiots who parrot "get a life", when they clearly are so lifeless that it brings them pleasure to hang around making mockery of topics that in no way relate to them, but I got a little too much dignity even for that.

To save new readers going through several pages of irrelevant posts, I'll reiterate three of those that actually relate to the topic, and with which I readily agree:

1. It's not a matter of demographic or Bioware's reluctance to implement a male homosexual romance option (keep in mind that there is one in DAO).

2. There simply are no 'gay' characters in ME2.

3. Kelly is a terribly lame and boring lesbian romance option, and the other - well, since there are no spoilers allowed - I'll just say the other is not really an option.

As for myself, having played a female Shepard since ME1, although I'm quite pleased with everything else in the game, ME2 is lackluster in terms of feasible matches for the heroine, be they male or female companions. The only exception is Thane, who has by far the most intriguing background story and greatest character depth I've encountered in the story line, albeit a tad depressive. Samara's character design and narrative are also interesting. Unfortunately, she's what, close to a thousand years old (?) and obviously would not make a good match for a male Shepard.

I for one would love to see lesbian action with my Shepherd. If that makes me depraved then let depravity rule! Besides someone needs to get the leather cockpit a work out and its not going to be Joker.

1.) Business reasons... its bad for business the "sex" scenes which could easily be in a PG movie already raised controversy in MEI. The truth is, whether you want to think so or not, is that homosexuality is for the most part unaccepted in many parts of the world. Homosexuality in III (And by this I am referring to male on male) would bring bad press and unwanted attention to Bioware and Mass Effect III.

Why is ME so different from DA?

2.) It makes no sence in the context of this game... Shepherd is straight, period. I would argue that the female romance option with Liara is not exactly a lesbian relationship... while Asari sexuality oozes female, in the end, biologically they can serve as both a father or a mother. In MEII we see that an Asari can seduce straight females just as easily as straight males as well. I havn't played females in Mass Effect, so I've no idea about the "relationship" between a female Shepherd and Dr. Chambers... so that may invalidate my statement that Shepherd is straight, period.

If female Shepherd is having sex with someone who looks like a woman, she's not straight.

3.) The majority of players do not want male on male relationships in any game - they will not make any extra money for including it, and referring back to bullet one, they may very well (and I would argue most likely) lose money.

Again, DA?

This isnt Dragon Age, this is Mass Effect, its targeting a different group of people.  Its not only targeting fans of RPGs but fans of Shooters.  And given the amount of time and work Bioware put into Mass Effect, I doubt they would want to risk another media backlash that could taint all the hard work they did.  Bioware is playing it safe, which is the right thing to due given all the effort put into ME2.  And to answer your question "Who really concerns about some idios who make a big deal about genitals"  People who want to make money do.  People who dont want their game tarnished by dipping into controversial material do.

I think a lot of those people saying it wouldn't sell well due to MM are saying that because they probably wouldn't buy the game if it had MM?

That's the only excuse I can think of to be honest. :? If anyone would really pass this game despite liking everythine about the game because it has a gay option he/she is probably a bloody idiot.

FOR THE LAST BLOODY TIME SHEP HAS NO CANON SEXUALITY, GENDER, RACE OR RELIGION.

GET OVER IT. <_<

JUST BECAUSE YOU FEEL THE NEED TO HAVE YOUR BELIEFS VINDICATED BY A BLOODY VIDEO GAME DOESN'T MAKE IT SO.

COMMANDER SHEP IS A BLOODY SELF INSERT JUST LIKE 99% OF BIOWARE'S PROTAGAONISTS

ONCE AGAIN

GET OVER IT.

Some morons can't understand unless you bloody type in all caps. <_<

I think we all should just keep in mind that Shepherd is a 22nd century guy/gal and such 19th and 20th century thinking has no place in the future.

As I said, I have no problem with gay and lesbian aspects are put in the game via DLC or placed into the game in ME3 at the get go. They didn't have a hang up with ME1 and DA, why should they do so for ME2 and ME3?

I don't have any problem with there being no same-sex, if for no other reason to spite the whiny agenda-seekers. If Bioware wants their Shepard to be straight, fine. Dragon Age lets you go that route, so they're not inattentive to the possibility. You can't have your way all the time.

Why people keep using this excuse? It clearly didn't damage sales for Dragon Age: Origins to have a gay option. Or Fable or Sims for that matter. No bad press, no bans, nothing. That assumption simply doesn't work. Dragon Age was the most sold RPG in 2009 despite (because?) of having a gay option.

Also Mass Effect is not "PG". It's M-rated, meaning it can contain anything short of graphic sex or incredibly brutal violence.

2.) It makes no sence in the context of this game... Shepherd is straight, period.

Except that Shepard is you. If you're not straight, nor is Shepard. Why people keep assuming that their Shepard is the only "real" one in existence?

And you didn't leave your personal views out of your post, by the way - there was very little other than personal opinion in it, backed with unverified, as well as outright false claims.

And you forget that gamers can`t be devided into shooter gamers, rts gamers, rpg gamers, adventure gamers and so on. I play shooters, rts, everything but sport. Many of the Dragon Age players now play Mass Effect. Sexuality is no issue and was no issue, never. Dragon Age proofed it apart from movies, music and the porn industry itself. I don`t know why BioWare did that but they definitly didn`t play safe because there is no safety in ignoring homosexuality. Sales aren`t hurt through it.

The truth is, whether you want to think so or not, is that

world. Homosexuality in III (And by this I am referring to male on

I have no need for a homosexual option (then again I also don't believe that Shep is YOU in an RPG sense, hence I have no problem with the concept of Shep being straight because I do not think that you can truly impose your personality on him in an RPG sense, the story is too tightly tied to his character to allow that kind of freedom). But 1) seems like a poor excuse. Leave to people to give "well, because we are cowards" or "because we are afraid of bad publicity" as a valid reason.

If m/m was that inpopular than the appropriate reaction would be indifference not being mad. It would show its unpopularity by being an exciting option that nobody ever pursue. Now reaction with a freakout at the mere thought of it being there as opposed to just having no interest in it that's the difference between homophobia and not homophobia [and before anybody brings out the tired "I'm not homophobic because homophobic means being afraid" excuse, err no, reaction with panic and nervous freakouts to every hint of something is exactly what germophobes or arachnophobes do with germs or spiders respectively]

I think ME2 is ok without m/m options. I can see the point of double standard, but I also think Bioware does dictate the progression of Shep quite a bit so I do think it's their right to make him straight.

Indeed. If anything, controversy brings more people in to see what the big fuss is all about. See what happened with ME1 when the media was told that there was going to be a sex scene.

But 1) seems like a poor excuse. Leave to people to give "well, because we are cowards" or "because we are afraid of bad publicity" as a valid reason.

I don't think that either of them was the reason; the company has shown it doesn't fear bad publicity or homosexuality for that matter. It's far more likely that they simply assumed that there wouldn't be demand for the option. These threads are meant to show that the assumption was wrong.

I'm no expert, but didn't ME2 already sell a ton more than DA?

Not yet though it probably will. Not because of any gay options, but because it's a sequel to a popular franchise, while DA was unknown prior to its release.

Your post lacks historical perspective. It assumes that morality continuously moves from conservative to liberal- from ignorance to enlightenment if you prefer.

This is not the case. There have been periods in our past when morality was much more liberal than it is now. A couple hundred years in the future does not guaruntee that morality has changed one way or the other.
