I'm asking, specifically, at what point of the game is the file that stores your career's data made?  The same file that you used to import your char from 1 to 2 (assuming you did an import).  I'm curious because if it is made at teh conclusion of the suicide mission (as I'm apt to guess it is) then technically isn't anything you do after said mission not going to be included if you import over to 3?  Things like extra missions or whatever you might have left undone before doing the suicide mission?

Just curious is all, to see if you have to basically do everything first or risk not having it transfer to 3 when the time comes.

It works differently in ME2. Any save made after the suicide mission can supposedly be imported to ME3, unlike with ME1 which used those hidden files.

Ah, alright then.  Works for me.

It'll probably be the same as importing a ME2 char into NG+.  Just a guess.

Look at your Squad menu, from the pause menu.... Above his name and level, is a character ID.... thats what I think initiates carry over.

How sure are you about this? There is one particular event that only happens after the suicide mission and I kind of want that to be transferred over in the future.

Not entirely sure since to my knowledge there is no working build of ME3 yet and I am not a Bioware employee, but Christina Norman has said it herself. So it is apparently the plan, at least tentatively.

I would imagine it is a case of any save done after the final mission (if you go with the continue option) overwrites the file that is used for imports maybe?

Proof that she mentioned something like this?
