I haven't gotten far in the game yet (took a break to read the second book), but are rogues necessary for your party?
In the infinity / aurora games, it was almost required to have a rogue for trap disarming, unless you had a skilled monk that could just run through everything before your party.
I am playing a dps bloodmage, and plan to use Shale as my tank, and Morrigan as my debuffer/healer. For my last character, I am in the air between Oghren, Sten, and Zevran.
I think the dialog options Oghren would add would be hilarious, and I like Sten's wit. I would only be considering Zevran for chests and possibly traps if there are such things.
Thoughts?
Is a Rogue a necessary party companion?

they can steal too, but I haven't tried that yet. Are there any good items to steal? I find Lelianna can't open up many lock boxes after the first area you get her. I'm not sure i want to invest more points into it either and gimp her combat abilities. I'm debating the value of a rogue. I may get rid of her. We'll see.

I've gotten better items stealing than in chests. And it's way too easy to succeed.

I have yet to steal anything, but I rerolled because I hated walking past all those shiny boxes with padlocks on them.
It's not great for the items, but rather for the cash you can make selling them. :-)
And it is rogue, not rouge.

Leliana is a great resource if you use her as a bard. Right now I have her using 3 sustained abilities and leaving her with no extra stam to cast anything else. The abilities are (forgive the lack of proper names) stam/mana regen, rapid fire, and all attacks lower targets attack and defense (stacking and the reason I have rapid fire active). She doesn't deal a lot of damage for my group, not does she have to because she keeps Morrigan and Wynn with a decent amount of mana at all times so they can do a ton of damage not to mention making life easier on the tank.

That is a great idea, Sean. I'll have to try it.

I've found some great gear behind locked doors or in locked chests. Most of the time it's an upgrade to things I've got.
So I'd say a Rogue is essential.
As for stealing... generally I either get a small bit of money, or some generic healing item.

Absolutely, unnecessary.
The best loot comes off monsters. I have not found anything in a locked chest that made me drool.
That said, I still like taking a rogue along to get the extra gold from reselling the crap they find.
I play with either Alistair(tank), Me(DPS Mage+a few heals), Morrigan(DPS+ a few heals), and Liliana to keep the mana going.
OR
Alistair(tank), Me(DPS Mage), Wynne(Healer/Rejuv), Zevran(DPS/Duelist/Assassin)

I steal from every npc in the game I can get my hands on. Once I get the forth steal skill, I plan to steal during combat too! Dwarves are especially rich, and stealing really boosted me up so I can afford the expensive specializations and tomes in the shop.

I don't know... off enemies, I generally find some crap gear, or some crafting materials.

Does anything prevent you from using the menu to switch party members when you need to unlock a chest? I assume it's not always available, but I've never paid much attention.

It's not always available. Depends on where you are.
