Without revealing any major spoilers, can anyone tell me whether it's worth bringing Shale to Orzammar? The reason I ask is that somewhere in one of my campside conversations with Shale, I think he said something about having been in the Deep Roads. And I think I read a Codex of something about the dwarves having been the original creators of golems long ago... Thanks, in advance!

There's no reason not to bring Shale to Orzammar!

There are some nifty dialog options for Shale in Orzammar. The deeper you go in the Deep Roads, the more you will want Shale. You will be forced to have Oghren at the final Deep Road battle. Having Shale there is well worth it.

I wouldn't bring him if you're planning on playing an 'evil' character.

An evil choice in the deep roads causes Shale to attack you, and I dont think you can persuade him to stop.

One of my regrets is not bringing him during a certain quest. Shale's backstory is connected to the anvil quest.

Bring him when Oghren is a forced party member.

She's a comedy goldmine. Its like having your personal Marvin-Golem with you. Shale's one of my favorite companions.

Careful though. There is the potential to lose her for good, depending on Player choice.

It's not a massive spoiler. o.O. And Shale never refers *himself to any gender, so you might as well call Shale an it.

Not to mention, the download pack mentions that Shale is female.. doesn't it? Atleast I knew Shale was female before I did the quest, and I rarely read spoiler websites.

*Itself? :D

Are you serious? This is not a spoiler. He just automatically assumed Shale was a male, when in truth, it is nowhere specified what gender was the original. Automatically calling Shale him is wrong as well. Shale is an it.

It is not a spoiler, and definitely not a major one.

Besided, if anyone wants a complete spoiler free hint, there is a specific non-spoiler forum right in the neighborhood

Edited to add: I agree, M-Taylor. It is possible that I'm wrong and it is specified officially, or at least somewhere prominent. I try to keep spoiler-free for first play-throughs, and yet, I knew Shale was formerly female.

Clearly the OP thought Shale was a 'him', and having mentioned he was about to start the quest, it just seems a bit lame for someone to spoil it in his own thread. Maybe it does mention it in the download pack; I never noticed it though, and so when revealed I thought the twist was quite a good one.

But ho-hum, that's what you get for dabbling in the spoiler forums I guess ¬_¬

Edit:

"It is not a spoiler, and definitely not a major one. "

It might just be me, but I'd have said that the crux of Shale's quest is that Shale turns out to be a) female, and B) a ...

Revealing that before the player actually finds out for themselves is what I would call a spoiler :P

The crux of Shale's quest has to do with her distinct lack of memory (it is mentioned quite often in the game that Shale has amnesia) not finding out her former gender. That's mostly irrelevant now, at any rate.

Lol, yeah, the spoiler forums can be traumatizing at first, I agree ;)

While there are reasons to bring Shale, there are also reasons NOT to bring Shale.

In keeping with the situation, and intending to suggest various levels of meaning... I do appreciate both sides of the coin in the current conversation. Just being honest, this news does come as a bit of a spoiler for me, personally (though I admit that I myself made an assumption, I myself may have obliviously ignored any info about this in the download pack, I myself dabbled in a spoiler-possible forum...). But I also have to admit having been mortified during math class when a classmate (and ertswhile friend) turned around and whispered to me the truth about Luke Skywalker's parentage, when the movie first came out and before I had seen it; and I confess to having felt a surge of irrational anger when a neighborhood kid blurted out what happened to Sirius Black when that book first came out, and before I had had the chance to read it. Those memories irk and ire me to this day... But there, I've gone and revealed too much about myself. Ah, the psychotherapeutic wonders of the relative anonymity afforded by these forums...

Rofl @ Martin.

Well, now. That could be countered with the accusation of sexism. Why the automatic assumption that Shale is a former male? Why? What led to that? Because it's a big, strong, rock-thing?

Note: Anyone taking the above completely seriously has only her/himself to blame :)

I tend to refer to Shale as a him simply because he has a what is obviously a male voice actor. If they wanted it to be more ambiguous they could have ("Pat" anyone?). So I always assumed that Shale was male before golem-hood and even after the reveal that Shale was a woman I still call refer to Shale as a him.

Shale is voiced by a woman, though.

...I'd always assumed Shale's voice after was female..even before learning "it's" backstory.

Really?  That's surprising.  Where did you learn this?  I sat through the credits one time to check voice actors and they didn't show up.  Where does it list voice actors?

Toolset lists VA in the character files.

Redcliffe desire demon for example is voiced by Kath Soucie known for many things but mostly in games from BG2 Aerie^ She also voices Allison (the traps subquest in lothering.)
