I'm playing the Vanguard class on insanity difficulty (I would chosen another class if I knew how gimped the Vanguards have become compared to ME1).

But anyhow I am currently stuck on the Horizon first encounter with the Collectors.
I need to hold out until the gun batteriers have done their work, I'm about half way trough it I guess.
To start the next battle sequence I need to hack a console and then the enemies come at me, the usual collectors mobs.
After a few waves of them, one gets a boss fight 'The Praetorian' now here the pain really starts for me.
I am unable to take it down, my team mates die sooner or later and I can't kill it myself due to I need to do too much running into cover.

Team consists of Jacob, Jack and my skills are not too great only charge lvl 3...

Any tips? (And no I don't want to lower the difficult setting, if so I might as well start over the game with the new class)

When you first get into that area there is this little platform thing to the left (there are staircases on both sides of the platform), go there along with your team and tell them to stay there. When teh Praetorian appears just start shooting and using you and your teams power against it. Though it didn't happen to me, if the praetorian manages to come up the stairs, simply go the other way and go down stairs. If it goes down the stairs, go to the opposite staircase and head upstairs. Keep doing this if it manages to go either up or down again, basically you'll be go around the praetorian in a circle.

Either way, it's attacks should be pretty useless. It's laser beam that it shoots should be blocked the railings of the platform and you should be pretty far from it's ground attack (the red thing)

Kind of hard to follow but hope it helps.

The platform strategy above is good, but be warned that it's a location husks can crawl out from.

Yeah, but usually they appear before any other enemy, so when a new wave arrives, look back and slaughter the husks that are climbing up to the platform. If you do forget about, hope your allies notice them.

Im just played this last night as a vanguard. No longer my favorite class! After a few tries (I'm on veteran now, so this may be irrelevant for you), I got it.

I had Jack and Garrus, which probably helped, since Garrus can overlaod shields, SHep as vanguard can pull, or Jack can use a biotic power, and finish off with a few shots. I find the combo attacks work best. Oh, and save the Collector particle gun for the final guy.

Do you have the nuke yet? It's a good time to use it.

The Praertorian follows a VERY perdictable pattern. He starts flying with no barrier hit him with any heavy weapon you have, then MOVE when he comes at you(if there are other enemies around use charge as the vanguard). Let him do his AoE, pull out a good weapon against barriers, destroy the barrier, repeat the heavy weapon/run away, then repeat again, you win. As long as you get out of the AoE and are smart when firing you should not have a problem.

Also is anyone else annoyed with how enemies(especially bosses) all go after Shep, even when a squad mate is shooting at them and you haven't shot at them once?

I believe you can hear harbinger say "Focus on shepard" a few times. They don't like you much.

For me this was one of the hardest parts in the game so far (I was adept, I ran out of ammo and my teammates died on insanity) I found a bunch of crates to the left of the staircases where you start, and just kept going in a circle around them, letting The Praetorian follow me, it may take a while to finally get him down but at least it will be over, just be patient with taking him down, and try not to let him attack you while your not in cover.

People who claim Vanguard to be gimped ought to learn to play. This isn't a Warrior on WoW, charging at-will is bad. But, charging at the right time will WIN a fight for you.

Playing Vanguard in ME1 was great fun at insanity difficulty from level 1.
But in ME2 they don't have Barrier from start (Vanguard are meant for close combat) and it was also possible to shot at longer range with shotgun in ME1.

So if you ask me Vanguards in ME2 are not the same as they were in ME1 which made them fun to play.
