Hi every1, just got my copy of Mass Effect 2 from my favorite game store and well, its the first time I brought a bioware game that "FAILED" to install on my PC!

before anything else here's the info on my PC

my PC's system specs:

1.      OS:                   Windows Vista (Basic)
2.      CPU:                Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 @ 2.33Ghz
3.      RAM:                2 GB
4.      VIDEO:            nVidia GeForce 8600GT (latest drivers)
5.      AUDIO:            Realtek high definition audio
6.      DirectX:           DirectX 11
7.      Media:             PC DVD ROM
8.      Vendor:           Datablitz
9.      DVD Drive:     LG DVD super multi drive with light scribe technology

ok so here's the problem... I CANT INSTALL THE GAME... sorry for the caps but its been a very frustrating experience for me. I've been waiting patiently for this game to come out and when it does I cant install it!

so let me take you step by step....so here's what I do, I place Disk One, disk autoruns clicked on install...pass through the legal stuff (I click on agree of course), I type in the Mass Effect 2 CD key... the game starts installing right every thing is peachy, extracts upto 99.8%, the DVD drive then stops and ejects the DVD, the installation program asks that I place Disk Two in, so I take out Disk One, place Disk two in the drive, and I wait....

my reason for waiting....normally PC installation using multiple disks once the program installation asks for the next one in the sequence and you put the disk in, it recognizes it and installation continues... so I waited a few seconds to see if the installation continues...NOTHING HAPPENS...

so I clicked on "RETRY" on the dialog box that pops up when the installation asks for Disk Two, and well.. wadda ya know.... "NOTHING HAPPENS" just a sound (ping!) that the seems to say the installation doesnt recognize Disk two...what the?

so there's no other choice but to click "CANCEL" the installation program then happily informs me that the installation isnt finished and that I should try again...I've been trying...ENDLESSLY since last friday night 29 Jan 2010

I've been buying bioware games for as long as I remember but this is the "FIRST" time that an installation FAILED on me, so I hope every1 can understand why I'm !@#!#2 sorry... I was hoping to play through ME2 this weekend and its saturday night now and I still cant install the game!

I even used my external DVD drive from my netbook, thinking maybe the DVD drive on my PC isnt working properly, but surprise, surprise I get the SAME result! its like the installation doesnt recognize Disk two when I can perfectly view Disk two's contents when I use windows explorer...what gives people?

tech people who read the boards or anyone who have experience with this problem and found a solution to it...help please!!!!

I had this problem with the disc changeover and am using vista 32 as well. I just kept trying eventually i managed to get it to recognise the second disc. Frustrating but got there in the end.

Persistence is needed!!

I had the same problem, thought mine wouldn't install no matter how many times I tried. Windows just refused to recognize the disc. After spending some time with a fairly unhelpful support tech on the EA support chat application, he recommended just returning the disc for a new one. So I shipped it back to Amazon for a replacement today. I guess we're all having problems from some bad batches of discs. Ah well.

This seems a very common problem. Happened to me as well. Here are some things to try:

1) If you have DVD43 installed on your system, disable it. I've read it can interfere with reading the discs. If you don't know what DVD43 is, then you don't have it.

2) If you have access to a different DVD drive, try hooking it up to your machine and see if it will read the disc. This is what I had to do when it failed to read disc 2 on my machine.

3) If your drive will read the disc, but won't install, you can try mounting an image and installing from that. Instructions from another forum member:

Step 1. uninstal all copies of me2

Step 2. put cd2 in your cd tray

Step 3. Useing deamon tools or a program like that make an image of the cd

Step 4. Mount said image of disk 2

Step 5. put cd 1 in cd tray

Step 6. instal, it shouldnt ask for disk 2 becuase you have it mounted in a virtual drive

Step 7. ???

Step 8. PROFIT!

Also

to make sure you've got everything you need your mass effect folder at

the end of the instal should total roughly 11.4GB if it's less you are

missing something smack yourself and start from step 1.

4) You can try DLing EA Download Manager and using your CD key to register the game on that. Then DL the digital version.

5) Try updating your DVD drive's firmware.

6) If none of that works, you can try returning the game to your retailer and exchanging for a new copy. Some people have reported exchanging has worked for them.

Good luck, and post back if any of this works for you.

Ok here's an update to my dilemma, as of today 31 January 2010 I have yet to get the installation of my store bought Mass Effect 2 game to work. and not for lack of trying mind you...wasted the entire weekend trying to get it installed to no avail T_T

I have consistently tried to install the game since friday, actually I now have an interesting problem, the twist is my PC doesnt recognize Disk One now! I have to put Disk Two in which then pops up the dialog/message screen that says "PLEASE INSERT DISK ONE", and when I do just that, remove Disk Two and put Disk One in and THEN the autoplay feature comes up where I can click on Disk One's Installation program!  What gives?

I checked the DVD's for scratches, there arent any and I must say its the FIRST time I've had to buy a game that didnt install or in this case "WONT" install properly, and oh btw I am also worried that if and its looking to be a pretty BIG "IF" right now, If the game does install...wont I still experience this problem down the line (the DISKS NOT BEING RECOGNIZED!), what then?

I'm going to return the game to the store where I brought it last friday and ask for it to be replaced, btw I already tried using another DVD drive to make the installation, still get the same problem, when ever I pop Disk two in when the installation process asks for it, it just doesnt recognize it! eventhough when I browse Disk Two I can see the contents of the disk itself.

I would also rather not fiddle with Daemon tools or Image files, if i wanted to use daemon tools or other image making program or whatever I would not have brought the "original" game.... no offense to those who use those tools however who make backup copies of their disks, I dont really make backup of my original disks so I never bother to use that kind of software....and as to downloading the game digitally well... my internet connection is below average at best and downloading files over 1Gig would take forever and a day and then some!

I'm a little old fashioned too, I like having a "physical" media to my games, DVD's / CD's there's a REASON why I brought the PC-DVD version, because I'm a collector, some people have hobbies, THIS is mine. So I'll probably have to return the game to the store... and to be HONEST about it, THIS IS GOING TO BE A FIRST FOR ME! I have NEVER had to return a game i brought from them I trust the store I brought it from, I've been buying PC games from them for the longest time and not once did I return ANY game, because they all worked perfectly.

I have to bring the game back now, because the store only has a 7 day warranty on the game and they still have to check if the problem is with the disks before they can give me a replacement, as I said this is a first for me so I dont know what to expect yet, if they will give me a replacement right then and there or they will check the game disks first, but I really hope they just give me a replacement copy...

I cringe thinking that... what if I had been able to get the collectors edition and this happed  (the store only had one copy of the collectors edition and someone else beat me to it!) I dont know what kind of disk check/copy protection program bioware is using this time out but let me be the first to say it... IT SUCKS big time! (I mean...what else could it be?) and this comes from me, a very loyal fan and consumer of all the games you've created.... btw on an unrelated...or could be a related issue....

My DRAGON AGE play disk (collectors edition) also is experiencing THIS kind of "IDENTITY" crisis, sometimes when I put the game disk in, it isnt recognized (which I dont experience with my NWN2 play disks or the other bioware games prior to it).... I have to eject the disk once or twice before the game recognizes the Disk and i can play it... also when I leave the play disk  in my DVD drive after I turned off my PC, and I turn my PC on again, the disk isnt recognized (its like there is a BLANK DVD in the drive), I have eject it and put it back in and....presto....windows detects it as my DA:O game disk and program runs again.....so perhaps this isnt a random thing? wish me luck peeps, I hope I can get a replacement copy and it works fine... maybe I should just get an XBOX 360 and get a copy of the game...but then I wouldnt be able to use my ME save game right or my dragon age armor from the collectors edition.... sigh...:(

ok so here's the deal, remember I returned the disks I brought from the game store, well they contacted me after about a week and said they had tested it and that there isnt anything wrong with them.

they gave me a few tips and directions so that I can install the game on my PC, their first suggestion was this: check if i had installed on my PC either AGEIA PHYSX or NVIDIA PHYSX and if I did, I should uninstall it immediately because Mass Effect 2 has PHYSX included in the installer and that maybe its what was interfering with the installation, "the whole not recognizing DISK TWO" when the installation asks for it.

second they recommended that I do a CLEAN BOOT install, you do this by running MSCONFIG and going to the general tab and clicking SELECTIVE STARTUP. So to make a long story short, I followed the recommendations of the techs that checked whether my GAME DISKS were faulty... guess what the result was?

IT STILL DIDNT WORK! yes I did all of the above mentioned suggestions and still couldnt install the game properly! the installation still stopped when it asked for DISK TWO because IT still couldnt recognize it when I put it in my DVD Drive! color me frustrated and really pissed at this kind of copy protection that !@#!@# with legit buyers of a game!

well after feeling all annoyed, I decided if the tech guys at the store could get the game to install, mind you I didnt see this actually happen, they just told me that nothing was wrong with the game disk, I put my few (extremely FEW really) hard earned knowledge of computers to the challenge...

first thing I did, I downloaded and installed CCLEANER, WINUTILITIES, and MALWAREBYTES ANTI MALWARE... my reason for doing so? well I thought maybe there are some residual COPY PROTECTION SCHEMES or such that were installed in my PC when I installed the games that I still have on my hard drive, MASS EFFECT, THE WITCHER, DRAGON AGE,  NEVERWINTER NIGHTS 2 and a few others that I have no knowledge of and was perhaps interfering with the installation of MASS EFFECT 2.

so I ran all those utilities and came up empty, fixed registry entries, freed up disk space, I found no root kits, no malware and whatever lurking files that maybe installed in my PC that I didnt know about. Second I performed virus scans to make sure my PC was virus free, after all that, I decided to install the game again, ONLY this time I had a PLAN...

I remembered the suggestion for not having the disks recognized during the switch over in the installation was to CREATE an IMAGE of DISK TWO and copy it to the hard drive, the game installation would then proceed without a hitch.... I took a slightly different route...remember that I still dont like using Disk Imaging software?

what I did was this... and I dont know if its even a feasible workaround for every1, I hooked up my EXTERNAL DVD DRIVE (coming from my NETBOOK) to my PC, so now I had TWO DVD Drives, second I placed DISK TWO on my MAIN DVD DRIVE (internal) and made sure windows recognized it, it did because I had windows explorer active and clearly stated that MASS EFFECT DISK TWO was in my main DVD Drive also the message screen asking for DISK ONE came up.

NEXT, I placed DISK ONE on my EXTERNAL DVD DRIVE and waited for it to be recognized, it recognized DISK ONE... took a few seconds before the SETUP program appeared and once it did, I clicked on install and followed the installation, and guess what?  The installation finally FINISHED! instead of my external DVD drive ejecting DISK ONE, the installation continued correctly to DISK TWO as the installation program accessed my main internal DVD drive and FINALLY finished installing the game!

so now I finally have the GAME working! and by golly ITS frickin AMAZING! btw, I no longer need the external DVD drive when I play the game now just pop in DISK ONE on my main internal DVD Drive and the game works very well... I've been running it the entire day and a half now to check if it would crash at some point, happy to report that it hasnt yet, and that I'm just finishing getting archangel and the good doctor on my team...

so... I'm finally playing.. hope my experience helps those who have installation problems and have a spare DVD drive around to hook up to their main PC, also I just used the express installation, when I installed the game... hope this work around could help others who have similar problems to mine...

on a different note, a comment on the gameplay element, the use of BIOTIC POWERS, I kinda wished they just kept the original ME's control scheme , where I just hit the corresponding "F key" and the corresponding BIOTIC power was activated, seems a little strange to pause the game to use a BIOTIC POWER on an enemy, BUT its something I can learn to live with, just to be able to play this game... awesome opening scene and I CANT wait to see how it all turns out...KUDOS to BIOWARE for making this game, except on the "INSTALLATION PROGRAM" of the game however, THAT is a BIG MINUS for legit people who BUY your games!, almost KILLED my enthusiasm for this game and almost severely damaged my confidence in the games you make!
