So I just finished ME2 & it was great. I loved the new combat system & the core gameplay mechanics have a real fun feel to them. The graphics & artstyle are very nice plus there is tons o lore, plot, & character development. I think ME2 should be RPG of the year if not GOTY depending on what else comes out BUT
I felt there was a huge lacking in variety of enemies, the levels were toolinear & small even for Bioware plus I did not like the way they design party member interaction. I did not like ME1 at all simply due to the gameplay mechanics but ME1 & DA:O did a much better job of making you care about your party members. In ME2 they rarely chimed in to add to the convo, talked while we traveled around a city or planet, & we can't even click on them & have a ranom convo on our adventures. The game is great even legendary for the RPG/Shooter mix but being two discs I expected more content with longer side quests. I mean the main & final battle was only an hour long. Just seems like Bioware took a cheap approach.
Does anyone else agree with any of this? Don't the levels feel so small & linear...I mean KotOR was more spaceous than this! lol. Idk overall I am very satisfied & would give it a 9-9.2/10 compared to the 9.6-9.7/10 I would give DA:O.

I too miss the crew interaction from ME1 - this crew just seems cold. I have to say I love how in the captain's quarters they have a picture of Kaiden on her desk (probably an Ashley picture to those who chose to persue that option?)

Well the complaint of variety of enemies is odd, because its quite an improvement compared to ME1 and I am content with that.

ME1 it was geth and husks, with the occasional Krogan/human here and there. maybe an odd Asari and Turian

In ME2 we had Mechs, Collectors, Gangs, Humans, Turians, Asari, Salarian, Vorcha, Geth, Husks and any I may have missed. I'd love to fight Hanars in ME3 "Enkindle this!"

edit: for me it was a picture of Liara :D

Just compared to any other game we didn't see much. You named a lot of species we fought once or twice for 10 minutes. Mostly all enemies seem the same b/c they all act the same. I also had an issue with team AI, I only played on veteran so it wasn't really that hard but I just let my party members die b/c they were not very good at anything lol.

Anyways all the enemies really feel too similar...I guess I miss a challenge like we got in DA:O..ME2 was just too easy & it seems like a true shooter. I mean instead of the game being more challenging through enemy AI, tactics blah blah blah they just do more damage & you get less health.

Overall still satisfied but the game felt very generic content wise not graphics or story just levels & enemies. All recycled no variety...few differences.

People actually think Metacritic has some kind of official credential when it comes to scoring the quality of the game? Seeing how there scoring is based upon reviews that are highly subjective and with no standardized testing outline, any score there is redundant. Its only purpose is to allow publishers to wax the glory that is their product to investors and media. Thats it.

You're right. It's not a 9.6 at all. It's a 10.

I liked the overall story better than I thought I would, but I have to agree on not caring about the new characters too much. I found that I kept a character around long enough to do their sidequest and then quickly forgot about them afterwards. It wasn't like that in ME...in ME I liked certain characters so much that I sought out to interact with them and always had them on my team.

More dialog and character development doesn't always mean that the characters are more appealing. It's like TV and the movies...you have all these characters that are well written and well acted and you have someone come in with a couple of lines and steal the show. Then they wind up being scene stealers in every scene they're in.

It was very much like that for me....Joker and EDI stole the show. They stood out far above any of the new squad members and I would like to see them again come ME3. As far as the new squaddies...I wouldn't miss them very much if I never saw them again.

I can agree with that, I always liked Joker & EDI had her moments too! :) It is funny how people respond with the 10 or million! or the whole entirely uneccessary super long pointless reviews mean nothing outlook. Haha. Contributing to a convo is hard!! haha. I wish we could of done a bit more when we had to play as Joker...had some more close calls & intense scens but I really enjoyed that part.

A 90 at the most, more a 87. A step away from rpg to shooter.

generous, I give ME2 a 8-8.5 at best!

They ooutright fail to create meaningfull relationships between the crew which is twice as bad as your suppose to beleive these people will go the extra mile for you but the connections just not there.

Id dont honestly care if any or all of the crew mates die and I dont see them in ME3

Bioware lost its midas touch on this game.
In other Bioware games, I CARED about my groupmates. Hell I even cared about Kaiden and I didnt really like him much but thats the rub. I knew Kaiden well enough to not like him. With ME2 I simply dont care.

I agree with what you've said. I'm mostly upset about the lesser character interaction, as you said. I must say that it is easily possible for them to create a DLC with the random character chats, all it takes is more voice acting, but as long as they can get it it can be integrated easily. I don't know about lip movement, it's not AS necessary, but anyway I think it's possible if they put a little bit more work to it. But I don't know if they'll find it as necessary as making new missions and weapons/armor. I hope they do though.

I agree that the reviews are a bit much. This game has fantastic presentation, good writing and it plays well, but unfortunately I feel like something's missing - as if it could have been bigger and more complex than it is. The lack of a hub world is one of the problems, as well as the linearity of most areas, and everything seems split up into bite-sized chunks that can be finished in half an hour. This makes it convenient to pick up and play, but it isn't so good for developing drama. I also feel the characters are a little bit lacking. They're not bad, definitely, but don't strike me as memorable just yet, and I don't feel as if the conversations with them shed enough light onto their personalities or their histories.

Overall, Mass Effect 2 is a bit like Jade Empire for me. Enjoyable and fast-paced for an RPG, but also lacking in gameplay and story depth, where novelty replaces exploration and scale.

Not to start a flame war but anyone notice the ones saying it deserve the high ranking can never tell you why. I mean everyone else is telling why they lowering the ranking in mature manners but along come these fanboi trolls that add nothing to discussion other then to always disagree with the majority!

Sorry, just seeing the same people attacking anyone that says anything remotely negative about game that its getting annoying.

Have a MATURE reason for your opinion! Is that so much to ask?

I give this game a perfect 10 out of 10.  In my opinion, it is the only game that could possibly beat Dragon Age as the best game ever made.  All the improvements from ME1 were perfect.  My only disappointments were that there weren't more random side quests for you to interact with your team members and just play more, and that the romances weren't more extensive (more conversations with Tali, please :-) ).  I don't hold it against Bioware though, because the game can't go on forever and they can only fit so much into it.
I also thought the hacking was great fun.  Interesting and not too difficult.  I didn't even mind scanning planets, except at the very end where I realized I had to find materials for a bunch of upgrades before I went to the final mission.  That was the only time it actually felt tedious, because while I had done a bunch of upgrades, I was very casual about it and still had a bunch left to do at the end.

Personally, I'd have given ME1 a 9.5 and ME2 an 8.5.

I liked having my entire squade available basically from the beginning so I have time to properly get to know them over the course of the game. I liked my loot and standard rpg weak -> god progression. I liked that weapons, armor and powers played a large factor in combat as well as aim and tactical skill. I liked being able to manage my squad's inventory. I liked not having to worry about ammo. I liked being able to use my powers when I wanted too, not when I'd already chipped through 2/3s of an enemies health. I liked having huge central hubs with lots of NPCs and sidequests. God help me I even liked the Mako.

Mass Effect 1 was a 9.5 for me, it had it's huge flaws but was overall an amazing game for me. Mass Effect 2 is a 9.6 for me, if only because it's improved on the first one's flaws. I liked the story, but it's too lacking in comparison to the first one's epic storyline - it felt less like a movie and more like a game, the game started out epic and amazing but downgraded when you had to recruit your people.

I hold no ill will to the game, it'll still hold on as one of the best games of 2010. I just wished the story was more deeply involved, the best moments for me were Intro / Horizon / Reaper IFF and the ending missions. Everything else in between felt like filler.

9.7-10 for me. Absolutely amazing. And I enjoyed how they fixed most issues I personally had with ME1. Sure, storyline may have seemed a little bit stale, and some of the characters weren't memorable (Zaeed, Jacob for me. They were extremely bland for some reason). I wanted my own crew back instead of recruiting new people. I missed having Wrex in my team =(. Honestly, I didn't mind if a number of the characters in the 2nd one died. I wouldn't have been heartbroken. But if ANYONE died in the 1st one, I would be in pain. You don't realize how quickly I rose up the persuasion so I can save Wrex. The only redeeming factor for characters in ME2 was Tali and Garrus, who were part of my crew in the original anyways.

But overall, I'd have to say this is slightly better than ME1. It's much faster, cleaner, and responsive in gameplay. While Mass Effect 1 was my favorite game, I was disappointed with the Saren fight. It seemed a tad bit gimmicky for me. Whereas the last battle in ME2 had my eyes glued to the screen. I definitely felt a rush. My heart was thumping throughout the whole. I also had a gripe with the damn Mako missions in the previous game. It all seriously felt a bit slow-paced eventually.

I just hope Mass Effect 3 will connect me with my original crew and still have the gameplay intact. The biggest disappointment of course is waiting for the 3rd one ><

i'll admit there wasn't much actual story in this one. 2/3rds or so of the game is recruiting people and gaining their loyalty. the interactions took a back seat in this one too. however, they did correct nearly all of my complaints about the first game, and I was most impressed with how much they tied in all the little sidequests from the first into the sequel. even little obscure characters I had helped or hurt along the way in ME1 either bumped into me or sent me an email in the second.

Ill give it a 9.2 or more. Just finished my first play through and i thought the combat was a big step up from the first. My only grip was that the new characters did not get much chance to shine and i found that the old characters had much more weight, even if their appearances were limited. But the new characters which stood out were EDI and Mordin. Morin/Samara, Miranda, Legion and Jack needed to be fleshed out more as they had potential. Grunt was very, very dull, especially when compared to his predessesor, Wrex.

I wish the game was also more free formed like Noveria from the first and i wished there were alot more sidequests as there were far too few in this one.

I think the DLC could help alot, though i think this game is primed perfectly for an expansion pack to continue the immediate aftermath of the collector defeat. Another 15 hours or so will give this normandy crew a proper sending off, however that might be too much for the ME3 writers lol. I hope that Tali, Garrus, Legion, Mordin and Morin/Samara make the cut as returning squadmates in the next one, along with ME1's LIs +Liara. Though that would put the number of squadmates at around 12++ so that might be unrealistic (prove me wrong!). If not then just Garrus and Tali lol. Great game.

Good job bioware, you guys have taken the mantle as the best game developers in the world from Blizzard. Great job.

The game was great.I agree some characters could of had more depth. With that said the combat is a beast,Insanity is F***** hard.Squadmate AI does suck, side missions are short.Planet scanning isn't as bad when you import. The story is amazing, depending on the upgrades on your ship the endgame is diff, upgrades do matter,The best thing in ME2 is the mako, never could have found a better use for it,then where it is in ME2 lol.

About a 9 for me.

I would like larger area's to explore with more ammo available to make it through those big area's. While we are in those larger area's I would like for my squad mate's to commment on what is going on.

Some of the lack of comment's where grating, I brought Tali and Garrus with me to meet Liara, you would think they would at least say something.
