I just finished my first playthrough on the default setting and almost done a second, but this time with an imported level 60 character. The differences are huge. Here's a list (which I'll update if people have others to add) of stuff you're missing if you choose a stock load out:

Default dead council

Default Udina ambassador

Default Kaiden/Ashley dead based on your gender

No Conrad Verner encounter

No Gianna Parasini encounter

No rachni queen encounter

The Asari from inside the Thorian doesn't show up

The Asari from inside the Virmire base who you can save or kill doesn't show up

No Fist encounter in Afterlife
Emily Wong doesn't send you an e-mail first time.
Wrex is dead.

Not to mention losing out on 300 000 credits and 60 000 of each resource and level 5 to start. It's a pretty huge boon.
EDIT: I think I got more credits because I had already beaten the game once.

How did you get so much of each resource? I imported my guy from ME1 who was level 60 and maxed out on credits and I only got 150000 credits and 10000 or each resources.

I think everyone who was able to imported their character but it begs the question to why the hell some people haven't played the first game.

On your second play through of ME2, you get even more resources than if you imported an ME1 character at max level and all quests finished.

I impotred my ME1 character, but I haven't



-met up with Wrex (I thought this was on Krgoan home planet?)

-met up with Fist

-Rachni Queen

-never got an email from Emily Wong (I think, the text is small, I could check again)



I've recruited all the characters right now and am headed to Horizon. Am I just not far enough in the game?

Yeah I've been there and done side missions for Aria, but I haven't run into him.  Where is he?

I think at the bottom level of the bar.

Not to mention news feeds discussing some of your exploits from the first game, emails, and other little details.



I can't imagine playing this game without having a character to import - I doubt it would have been nearly the same experience.

Yes he's in the lower level of Afterlife, assuming you or Wrex didn't kill him.

And Udina is indeed default leader.
