If someone could help, I would really appreciate it.

I bought ME1 through the EA download center very recently (wanted to see what all the fuss was about).  I had no trouble installing, but when I try to launch, I get a message which has become infamous: failed to find default engine .ini file to retrieve My Documents subdirectory to use.  Force quitting.

Now, I have tried just about everything I've found on the internet.  I don't use Steam, so there is no Steam cache to verify.  I am not using an AMD quad core (Pentium dual core, instead).  I have plenty of hard drive space, I meet all the system requirements, I have updated all my drivers and I have reinstalled around half a dozen times.  I run Windows XP and have fiddled with the Config folders, both in the Program Files of the c: drive, and in the My Documents folder without success.

In a new twist, in my most recent reinstall, the game worked--once.  Then it went back to this same old message.  If anyone has any idea what is going on or what I should do, I would be very grateful.

System:
Intel Duo 2.0 Ghz
2 gb Ram
GEForce 8800

Thanks again.

Right, I've searched google extensively and had no luck. That link just points me to cache verification of a steam-downloaded game. However, this game was not downloaded via steam. It came through EA. The two fixes those people used--reinstallation and cache verification--have not worked (in the former's case) or are unavailable (in the latter's). I am hoping someone has a more novel approach to fixing this mess, as my ideas have run dry.
