Honest thoughts about all of the complaining? Reckon the whole affair reaffirms what I think of the net in general and why I don't spend much time on forums. Everyone has a viewpoint and they're right (if they're not right, they have the right to voice it). Right, you have the right to voice it, but this 'Mass Effect is now Gears of War' rubbish isn't exactly new. It's not close to being accurate either.
I don't know if you realise this or not, but the whole notion that the game is Gears of War does it a disservice and in my view, it craps on what BioWare have set out to achieve. That's not to say that Gears of War is a bad game though, because it's good at what it attempts to do.
However, the reason it craps on what BioWare has attempted to do and also gives false impressions to people who might be interested in the game can be summarised as this:
The only thing that is similar to Gears of War is the fact that there's an emphasis on third-person shooting (and please, do note I said 'third-person', not 'first'... sorry, it comes with writing, wanting to get things correct. I know you didn't say it was a first-person shooter OP, but I've read that elsewhere while talking about Gears.)
So, let's go over what is similar in Gears of War:
1) Third person shooter. Oh, and seeing as it's a stickier with people... no stats affect the ability to hit a target (apart from a assault rifle upgrade I've seen in Mass Effect 2, though damage can indeed be boosted with upgrades), plus there's ammo.
2) It has a cover system.
Now, what does Gears of War lack? And when I mention dialog and story etc., they're good for the type of game it is but in comparison to Mass Effect, it's found lacking (when you look at it from a perspective outside of genre).
1) Gears has no upgrade system. Except you can pick up different weapons.
2) While the skill trees may not exactly be extensive in this game, Gears has no levelling at all.
3) Now, I'm not going to say Gears of War requires no thought process. However, it doesn't make you bring up a power wheel and select different ammo types/abilities to disable enemy defenses. That's part of the tactics and strategy in this game.
4) Gears is a straight up shooter. There's not much talking at all. Even when there is, the quality isn't there. However, it's fine for the type of game it is. So basically, it doesn't really have much going for it outside of the shooter aspects and the multiplayer because that's all there is to it.
5) You cannot wander about areas whenever you want without enemies to kill. So, you're set on a linear path. (unless you count the fact that you can choose a different route in a level as being non-linear) In other words, you can choose the order you do things in and you're not always fighting. (this applies to point 4 I suppose.)
6) The story isn't great. But again, it's fine for the type of game it is. It's also an opinion that the dialog and story isn't too good, so please don't assume I'm stating that as fact.
7) There aren't any decent - good/great characters in Gears of War either. Again, an opinion.
8) You cannot influence the path the story takes. Nor can you decide how Marcus reacts/says at points of the game.
9) Another opinion is that I believe the world/setting/universe/ isn't as interesting. BioWare really has created a rich setting for Mass Effect.
10) Gears doesn't have any real replay either unless you like the single player mode and multiplayer aspects. After you've gone through the game once, you've seen everything. To fully see everything in Mass Effect 2, you need to play through the game several times.
So, Gears of War 2 lacks everything I mentioned (apart from the parts that are opinion based). Mass Effect 2 has everything it lacks. Can we stop the silly 'Mass Effect 2 is now Gears of War' threads now...? Like I said, it's fine to state an opinion but it's been said over and over, plus honestly... they're not really close to being alike apart from Mass Effect 2 sharing third-person shooter elements. And for the record, while I've not completed the game yet, I am quite a ways in. I also do think it's quite a marked improvement over the first game. At the of the day, Mass Effect has always been an action RPG in my view.
Also, I referenced this in another thread but it seems to have been ignored, but did people complain about the lack of inventory etc. in Jade Empire? I remember the only customisation (aside from player choice and dialog etc.) in that game being limited to improving styles (such as attack speed) and slotting various gems into an amulet. Pretty lightweight if you ask me in comparison to other RPGs. Still a good game though and those things didn't impact my enjoyment of it.
And honestly, I really couldn't care less. I do wonder if these threads are swaying people into buying or not buying the game though. Then, when they get it, they may be disappointed because it's not what forum threads have said. However, there's a valid point that people shouldn't automatically assume what they read on forums is correct.
Plus yeah, I'm constantly amazed at the whole 'idiotic' nature that consumes people whenever a game releases. It's the same on every single forum. It gets bashed to hell.
Personally, I'd rather spend my time actually playing and enjoying the game than looking for gripes or posting here. The only reason I'm not playing right now is due to the fact I'm on a break from playing. You know, the whole red ring of death thing? Never play the console long for fear of overheating.
(By the way, I enjoy traiditonal RPGs along with shooters etc. so I can somewhat see the complaints surrounding certain aspects, but I cannot agree with the 'Gears of Effect 2' assessment at all.)
Edit: I'm only going to say this once as well, but I knew quite a bit about the game before I bought it. A lot of this complaining could be avoided by actually knowing what you're buying.
