Ok, so I know this sounds similar to a number of other posts on here, but it's slightly different I think :P

I get the stuttering effect when doing anything really, it renders and plays a few frames, has a think about it, then does some more, not just at the menus, but while playing the game, trying to use menus etc, it's like, as the title implies trying to play a slide show, not fun. The game doesn't lock or freeze, it just chugs along. No other game I have or play does anything like this and all work fine.

I've tried all the suggested work arounds: the blank movie files; running with the no movie start up on cmd line; letting the opening movie play through once then playing; updating drivers and BIOS etc nothing seems to work. and it's not that I have a single core system either.

Specs as reported by windows, BIOS and ME2 Config:

OS: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (5.1.2600)
DX: DirectX 9.0c (Mar2009) or later
Processor: Intel® Core™2 CPU         X6800  @ 2.93GHz
Clock Speed: 2930 MHz
Type: Family 6, Model 15, Stepping 6
Number of CPUs: 1
Number of cores: 2
Physical Memory: 2.49 GB

Display Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GX2
VRAM: 512 MB
Driver Version: 196.21
Sound Adapter: SB X-Fi Audio [AC00]
Diver Version: 6.0.1.1373

nothing uber, but well within system requirements. Any ideas anyone?

how bout other games? or is it only mass effect?
could it run gears smoothly?

friend of mine had a problem similiar to yours
i just updated a couple of drivers and killed close to every single non essential process and it worked fine here after
do you have any processes running that might take up a chunk of system memory

I don't have gears, but Dragon Age, Fallout 3, Bordelands etc all run fine
