By Death Magnet I mean he has a high chance of dying during the suicide mission. Done 2 playthroughs so far.
Constants in both:
1. Ship has all neccessary upgrades so no deaths up until the actual ground mission.
2. Garrus lead second team every time.
3. Zaeed escorted survivors back, all survived.
Playthrough 1:
1. Samara handled the biotic field.
2. Mordin went through the vents, got killed closing the door.
I don't recall who I had on my squad, think it was Tali and Legion, or somebody, pretty sure it was Legion as I was admiring its skill with the Widow.
Playthrough 2:
1. Jack handled the biotic field.
2. Tali went through the vents and survived.
3. Took Legion and Grunt with me.
Saw Mordins body as Collectors were walking past as we were exiting the station.
The only thing I can think of is that bringing Grunt instead of Tali or Mordin tipped the scale of nerds on the second team too far over to the wimpy spectrum. You would think Mordin would be better at surviving because of his time with the STG, but aparently not.
Is it me or is Mordin a death magnet?

It's just you.
Bad tactical decision.
Concentrate on the roles your people filled in their past.

He kept dying on me too so I decided, heck, I'll bring him to the final battle this time.. and surprise nobody dies.

Is Mordin loyal, and did you get his personal omni-tool upgrade? Also, the reason he dies in the vents is because he's more of a biologist and master researcher than a hacker. You need a hacker like Tali or Legion to handle the vents.

Sending him to escort the survivors will also ensure he lives.

I'm mainly talking about my 2nd playthrough here, I know it was a bad call in the first one, thats why I went with Tali. But still. I took Grunt and Legion with me, that leaves an Asari Jsticar, and Assassin, a human biotic wrecking ball, a Turian who is a great survivor as well as a great marksman, a Quarian mechinist who is no push over, and a former member of the STG. How is all those people being in the second team a bad tactical decision?

Sent him to escort the survivors because he kept dieing on me no matter what I tried and he survived for some reason.

Maybe he is better suited at "escorting".

Mordin is one of my favorite characters so I used him in my personal squad during the endgame sequence (along with Legion -- go geth!). We kicked ass. I don't think I used a single first aid kit (hardcore difficulty) during the entire end game sequence.
I was an adept.

Did you get him his prototype personal omni-tool? I'm fairly certain that ensures his survival if you don't pick him for any of the major tactical roles.

I didn't choose Mordin for any of the important roles or bring him on my team, and he still survived. He did have the personal upgrade - perhaps that is indeed relevant.
