In Mass Effect, although you were facing impossible odds, the game still had a "good" feel to it.  The Alliance and Council were right behind you supporting you, and it seemed like your mission was listed as #1 on the "Galactic Impoortance" list.  It had a 'good vs evil' vibe.

I know that BioWare's direction for ME2 was "dark", and for that, I say mission accomplished BioWare.  The whole game I felt (and still  feel) uneasy about working for Cerberus, and although your mission is important, no one besides Cerberus seems to care.  On top of that, the squad members I really liked from ME1 were completely indifferent to Shepard, futhering my feelings of being  isolated and forgotten.  At the end, the mission was the only thing Shepard had left to sustain him, or so it felt like that to me (although, Tali was a huge bright spot IMO.)

*ME2 end spoilers*

With ME2's ending, (I played Paragon, so I'm not sure how Renegade differs) but Shepard and his team basically tell The Illusive Man and Cerberus to screw themselves.  It appears that Shepard is done with Cerberus, and can now rejoin the Alliance and continue his Spectre work.  On top of that, he now has valuable information that links the collector attacks with the Reapers.

With this, I REALLY hope BioWare brings the direction of  Mass Effect 3 back to the "good vs evil" feel that the original Mass Effect had.  The SR2 can be added to the Alliance fleet, and Shepard can now formally continue being a Spectre and preparing for the upcoming war with the Reapers.  Additionally, I hope that ME3 brings back the "good old crew" of Ashley/Kaiden, Liara, Wrex (if he is alive), Tali and Garrus, along with some of the ME2 characters.

I hope I'm not the only person that would love a return to the style and feel of Mass Effect 1 when the third game comes out.

I really wanted tali and garrus to stay with me until the end but.. it seems like every squad member has the potential to die in mass effect 2, which would mean none of them can be back for mass effect 3, unless bioware wants to ignore what happens in imported games.

I pretty sure Bioware will make it so your imported save adjusts ME3 just as they did with the ME1 to ME2.
