Basically what the title says. The config tool crashes when it's starting up. I've updated my drivers and so on to the latest versions and it didn't help.

My specs are:
Windows Vista Home Premium
Intel® Core™2 Duo CPY P7350 @ 2.00Ghz
4 GB RAM
nVidia GeForce 9600 GT
DirectX 10

Mind I haven't tried any reinstalls of the game. Is that worth trying first or is it just a waste of time?

Always worth trying a reinstall, although I'd do so as a last resort. Are you running it as admin?

I've tried doing that yes. Didn't work either.

I've had this problem with every single bioware game ive ever boughten. really want to figure out how to bypass it cause i want to play my ME1 Character! but like i said, its the same for ME1, dragon age, and now ME2, config just quits on me every time.

With every single one of them? I've only had it with this one.

to skip the launcher, go to c:/program files/mass effect 2/ binaries/ masseffect2.exe

Likewise. I want to continue my FemShep's story. Not to mention I absolutely loathe some of the default choices in ME2 if you don't use imported saves from ME1.

I don't know what it is about BioWare's config utility and Windows 7 64-bit. It didn't work for me with DAO, and now ME2, also. Thanks a ton for the post, Killswitch. That got me going.

Unfortunately for me my ME1 was on xbox 360, that got RRoD and sold it on ebay, since then I got a power house of a pc and got ME2 for it. I saved Ashley on my ME1 it didnt allow me to choose that option :(

Anyway, occasionally when starting the game up, it crashes on the opening logo's Im on Win7 64bit. Are there any fixes for it?

this post is over a year after this thread's conception. however none of the answers or genuine attempts to provide support have given the correct answer/cause for this not only here, but anywhere on the web where this has been brought up. that's my "This is Over a Year Old, Necro-Man" pacifier. i suppose it's the least i could do for once before another 20 year slumber

After quickly solving this for a friend, it's an Extremely simple solution with an apparently overlooked cause

The configuration utility commits suicide whenever its output is a.) not found b.) write-protected c.) restricted access in any shape form or fashion

yes, that means if innocently copied+pasted your bioware/me2 and or anything within a directory structure that belogned to a previous "install" of the OS, user group, foreign policy, corrupted indexations, swine flu - you name it. it'll crash with one of several variation error messages/crash behavior

solution (simple!) - Delete the entire tree (save your individual files elsewhere temporarily, such as save game/entitle). upon deletion, re-run the configuration utility...and behold it's glory for you have earned it. it'll recreate everything, properly and you would have saved yourself the annoyance of setting permissions through windows UI, and "double tapping" permissions in its parented registry listing

farewell

This worked for me. The page is still active. Essentially, what it says to do: Copy the "Char" file from your ME1 Saves folder, then paste it into a "ME1" file in your ME2 Saves folder (create a new "ME1" folder if it does not already exist).

This is one of three bugs I had to fix just to get this game to play. Company should be embarrassed.

Get over yourself. This bug occurs for < 1% of players, so therefore is more likely caused by user error, hardware glitch, or 3rd party software interfering with the import procedure.
You should be embarrassed for not knownig what you are talking about.

Get over myself? You're the one who sounds awfully overcommitted to being a website game guru.

Let's see your data proving that this bug occurs for less than 1 percent of players. Or do you not know what you're talking about?

Number of games sold divided by number of bug threads posted.

Besides which, you havent ergistered your copy of the gameon the forums, which leads us to conlude that you are running a pirated version of the game, and as such any bugs you encounter are the caused of hacked/modified files. Register your game and you will get a full apology for me calling you a pirate. Leave it unregistered, and you prove my point.

You are disinformer agent for BioWare....lol
Google lists more than 1 million results with this search.
PC issue = PC versions sold divided by 1,000,000.
Tell us again this is less than 1%
"YOU should be embarrassed you can't get facts right ." Oh right, disinformation!

Learn to use google. Those 1 million results were for any listings using any of the above words.
A boolean seach (you know, one that contains ALL of the words) for the string "Mass Effect 2 Configuration tool crashes on start up" brings back 1 result.

And no, I dont work for Bioware, or EA. If people are too lazy to learn to use and troubleshoot their own PC, they should do everyone a favour and get a console instead. Gaming on PC requires you knowing something about its use.

Too busy this morning to really deal with this but your "Boolean" search = 1 is wrong and here are just 3 right off the top of my Boolean search.
I will be back to chat latter thou..hopefully :)
