I have a similar problem in that the majority of the links on the webpages are in different language/weird characters.

Make sure that your language settings haven't been inadvertently changed. Not all languages are completely translated, so sometimes not all phrases change when you switch langauge.
There is a dropdown block at the bottom of the page where you can change the language.
