OK folks.  I am not normally a space/shooter person, preferring games like Dragon Age or Neverwinter Nights, but Bioware is so good at story telling that I decided I have to give ME2 a try.  I am really happy I did; I am really enjoying the story so far.

I have a few questions, though:

1. How do I know what weapon to use and when?
2. Do weapons ever run out of ammunition? If so, how do I get more?
3. Which upgrades should I be doing first?  Last?  Not doing?
4. I have been using Auto Leveling since I really don't understand what I should take or not.  It looks like the level system doesn't do anything -- what should I do?

If there is a good, simple guide to all this stuff, I'd be happy with a link for an answer.  I looked around, but the ones I saw assume a certain level of knowledge about this type of game -- a level of knowledge that I just don't seem to have!

Thanks in advance

1. Whichever you prefer depending on your class. Only soldiers can use all. Other classes have the Heavy Pistol, SMG and i think Sniper for Infiltrator. I think you can unlock weapon classes for biotics/tech users through achievements like in ME1, but i'm not sure.

2. Yes, they run out of ammo. Pick up heat sinks from dead enemies to resupply.

3. Depends on your preference.

4. The level system does do "anything". You get to level up until the 4th level, then evolve your ability into one of two new choices. You can also unlock one more bonus talent if i recall correctly.

1) Each weapon and ability description will tell you what they are effective against (Armor, Shields, or Barriers).

2) Yes, however every enemy that uses a weapon will drop a universal heat sink "clip" that refills your "ammunition"

3) Entirely up to you. Will depend if the characters in your squad and if you want them doing more damage or you.

4) Auto leveling is typically not a good thing. You will want some control with how your character develops. If you are not happy with the skills your character has, you can retrain later in the game.

Rapid-Firing weapons are great for taking down Shields!

Get the Upgrades for YOUR weapon of choice.

For example, if you and your squad mostly uses Submachine-guns, why not focus on SMG-upgrades?

Also don't forget upgrades that add survivability, improving shields etc

There is always a choice, who should i upgrade first?
The Squad, The Ship or The Shep? :)

Weapon usage is more personal preference, but they all have their "specialties".

Shotguns are good for close ranged encounters, but can't hit the broad side of a barn at long range.

Submachine guns are great rapid fire weapons that really work well to take down biotic barriers and and unarmored targets.

Assault rifles are the "jack of all trades" weapon, good at everything, great at none.

Sniper Rifles, pretty self explanatory imo. Great at long distance sniping, and going for one shot kills with headshots. Very few shots per thermal reload.

Weapons don't actually run out of ammo, but the premise is the same with the "Thermal Clips". Pretty tough to run out of them though since any enemy that is using a weapon will usually leave some behind when killed.

Heavy weapons do run out of ammo, and you can only get more by finding "power cells" in the maps.

Upgrades, in the end if you have the patience getting them all is probably best. If I were to make a preference, scanner upgrade should be your first priority, mixing in ship upgrades like armor/weapons with personal upgrades, armor/weapons.

The leveling system isn't as intricate as some of the previously mentioned RPG's you've played and designed more along personal usage and preference. It's very tough to "gimp" yourself, and at a certain point, researching a "respec" of feat points does become available if you want to change things up a bit.

I'm not sure about any guides, but I hope I was able to help you out a bit.

Upgrade the weapons you and your preferred squad members use the most. Tali and I love our shotguns, so I upgraded the crap out of those. I also put a lot of upgrades into SMG's, since I use mine much more than I thought I would and Miranda also uses one.

Survivability upgrades help your squaddies avoid seemingly random plot deaths in the final mission, so upgrade your shields dammit!

Omni-tool upgrades help ensure your tech experts survive the final mission.

Mordin is squishy, and can die seemingly at random. Get his prototype omni-tool just to be safe.

The Normandy's lab. You have to spend Element Zero (which you can find in the game or on planets that you survey) to do it.
