i was wondering if there is a way to get a non-soldier class to use an assault rifle? also does anyone know where to find the geth rifle?

Yes I was playing another type and when I got on the collectors ship the first time I was able to choose to learn the assault, shotgun or sniper.

I believe that this time around weapons are class specific.

So if you want to use the assault rifle, you've got to play a Soldier, otherwise you're stuck with the machine pistol/submachine guns.

The Ghost Ship main mission is where you can find weapon training. As for the Geth rifle, it can be found on the floor in the room where you meet Tali on the planet Haestrom during her recruitment mission, but you have to be on Hardcore difficulty or higher.
