I'm early on the game.. currently collecting crew mates..  All of sudden I can't go any further unless I speak to the illusive man.. The mission is where you travel to the planet that Kaiden is on that gets attacked by the collectors.  The Illusive man asks me something about how far along Mordin is on his research of swarms..  ??  I have no recollection that was what he was researching but ok.. I go along with the story..  I then go into a cut scene with Mordin.. Who some how has a collector insect???  Again.. what?  Where did he get that?  What's going on?  I've been in absolutely no missions that I've had to face collectors.   So how did we get that bug?  Did I miss something?
I do play when I'm tired quite a bit so it's very possible I missed some dialogue somewhere?
If anyone could fill me in I'd really appreciate it.

You knew that the collectors were somehow incapacitating colonists from the colony you visited, and you needed him to figure out how to prevent it. He was researching a counter measure.

Mordin researching the Collectors was the reason for his recruitment.

How he actually got a bug confuses the hell out of me. Plot hole?

Ok.. so the reason he's researching that makes sense I guess. My thoughts didn't for some reason automatically turn to him researching swarms.. but that does make sense.

But yeah.. the insect. I actually re-loaded an earlier save and looked the lab to see if there was one. the containment unit is there.. but no insect. It just makes it feel like I missed some bug collecting mission or something. Oh well. On with the show.

Thanks for the quick replies.

I always thought Cerberus picked up the bug on the first mission where you run into Tali. Freedom's something... Progress I think, not sure.

They state when you recruit him that Cerberus already has samples for him to study.

If you listen to the dialogues they say he needs to find out how to prevent the swarms from affecting your crew. IT is main plot can't miss stuff, just pay attention. AS to how he got the bug, I never saw mention of that, but it isn't that big leap of faith that he was provided with one captured from a previous colony attack found in the aftermath (they are machines not bugs after all.). Broken repaired test upon... Not sure if it explained it or not...

Also keep in mind, there is alot of stuff on left of converstation wheel. Clicking on these almost never effect right side, (it'll loop back to same spot) but provide aheck of a lot more details about what is going on.

IMHO, he made it. It is a robot, after all.

He had a theory, couldn't test it without a bug, so he built one from information contained in Veetor's Omni-tool, which was forwarded to the Normandy for just this type of research.
