Hello all, and thank you in advance for your help.
Q1: What are the rules for simultaneously sustained abilities? I have a warrior, and cannot sustain any two shield abilities at once, they are obviously disjunctive, but I CAN keep threaten up while I have a shield ability up. What are the rules on simultaneously sustained abilities and their disjunctiveness?
Q2: This is my first playthrough, I have completed about 10% of the game according to character sheet. I left Loth. and followed Alistairs advice to go to Redcliff. I'd like to get to the castle, but apparently I have to save the villiage first. I am playing "normal" difficulty and am no neophyte to games like this, but I am just getting my butt kicked. Is this normal? The rest was a breeze so far, what gives?
Two brief questions

You can only keep one shield sustained ability up at once, threaten does not involves your shield and that's why it can be active at the same time as a shield ability. So you can combine a sustained ability from the warrior trees with a shield sustained ability.
Redcliffe is annoying the first time, I got totally destroyed there the first time.
You might want to do the Circle of Magi first, the mage Wynne will join you (if you do it correctly), she is a healer so she will be a great help when doing Redcliffe.
Also recrute as many of the town people as you can (Dwynn, Lloyd and Berwick), I always pay Dwynn for the others just use intimidate/persuade.
Who are your other party members?

You could check the sticky in the character builds section for different tips and guides. The first time playing can be pretty difficult, it's true.
As for sustains, as you saw, if they are similar sustains you can't have them both active. For example, a mage has to choose between using frost or flaming weapons. Otherwise you can have as many sustains active as you have stamina for.

Thank you!
So, sustains from the same "school" are disjunctive, is that it?
My other party members are Alistair, Leliana and Morrigan. I had left the dog at camp. I would kind of like to have a rogue in the party, and my main character is a shield warrior.
I was under the impression that I was to go to Redcliff first, just guessing from what Alistair was hammering into me, what with the Arl being sick and all and the mention of the Urn quest. I had figured the others had time. No?

You can choose which one you do first, though (for example) Nature of the Beast is really hard to start with because you have to fight a dragon. So Alistair points you in the direction that is 'easiest'. You just need to figure out how to fight, where do you get defeated on top of the hill with the knights or down in the village?

DO not forget about the oil at the general store in redcliffe, it helps when fighting the zombies.

The battle at the top of the hill with the knights is "easy", as far as I can tell. Then an archer comes running up and tells me to help down in the villiage, since they are "attacking from the docks". I get crushed there. I reloaded a couple of times, and retreat up to the top of the hill where the knights are, and that seems to help, but I have no idea how long I have to stick it out there for, or if that is even ok (I mean: if the stream of zombies will be endless unless I go down). The militia et al. down at the villiage get killed.
Is Redcliff considered "easy" and the first place to go once I leave Loth.?
EDIT: I have the oil up, that wasnt the problem, it is once the milita comes and asks me to defend down town.
thank you

You got all people recruted?
Running up the hill might work, but the quest ends once you killed all undead. So in the end you need to walk around the village to check if you killed everything (sometimes a skeleton just stands by the lake doing nothing). Try to use poison, traps and/or enchanted weapons.
Like I said, Redcliff was a pain for me the first time, I manage to pull it through with Alistair, Sten and Morrigan (I'm a rogue). So maybe try replacing Alistair?

Redcliffe can be pretty tough to play right out of Lothering: your character is still fairly weak, you don't have access to a dedicated healer (not necessary, but helpful), and you probably don't have a whole lot of health potions, either. A lot of people have trouble on the very section you're finding tough.
Some suggestions:
1. The Pause and Tab (on the PC) buttons are your friends. Pause a lot and survey the field, then issue commands as necessary. Use Tab to highlight everything on the field, so you can see the health of both the enemy and the militia, as well as the strength of the enemy you're facing (stronger enemies have colored (yellow or orange) names, normal ones are white-named).
2. Focus fire--make sure your team gangs up on one enemy at a time
3. Take out the strongest enemies first.
4. Keep an eye on your health. It can be a tough balance between conserving your health potions and making sure you take one in time to avoid dying, but micromanaging will be helpful in this.
5. As grand as the sense of accomplishment is when you save most, if not all, of the militia, it's actually not necessary, story-wise, that you do so. If you're really having problems, let the militia die and lure the undead up to the knights, who will make short work of them.
Alternatively, if you have a save game from just before Redcliffe, you can reload and either:
1. Go to the Circle Tower where you can pick up a dedicated healer character (although you will have to finish that entire quest first--once you pass a certain point, you cannot leave). You'll also, for reasons I won't spoil, be a much stronger character after you finish this quest.
2. Respec Morrigan to have the Heal talent, whether she leveled up naturally during the Redcliffe quests or you download a respec mod to do this.
3. Go to the Brecilian Forest, where the merchant has an unlimited supply of elfroot to make health potions.
4. Skip the village quests entirely and go straight to the castle.

JosieJ gives good advice. Additionally, for this battle, I would switch Leliana out for Dog. She is really pretty weak this early in the game, and you don't need a rogue for the battle. Dog has Dread Howl, and good damage. You might also switch Alistair for Sten, if you have him. Shield warriors do pretty low damage, and a second one is pretty redundant. You could try watching the redcliffe battle in my signature, although that link might have some minor spoilers in the way of names of bosses.

Hey thanks. I do like to RPG a lot, and so I left Sten; he just didnt fit in with the lawful good kind of guy I am playing.
I didnt realize I could go right to the castle. How could I have done that?

Yup. Likewise, the same mage cannot sustain two or three weapon enhancement spells.

If you leave the village, everyone will die. When you come back they are all dead, except for one person (I won't say who so as not to spoil). You can then go to the castle without the village fight. It's probably not a good choice for you if you're 'lawful good' though. And there's still a tough fight at the castle anyway.
Lots of good suggestions here already, so I won't repeat them. But I will say - balance your party. Who you take with you shouldn't be based on alignment: it doesn't work that way in DAO anyway; and you'll end up with an unbalanced party. So, you only need 1 tank - you or Al, not both. The other 3 need to do dps, utility, healing, crowd control, buff/debuff. Of course, each character is doing quite a few of those things. What mix works best for you class wise is a personal preference thing. You just need to make sure your team has all the roles filled.
