Well I've ran as admin to no avail and updated my graphics card drivers. I'll update my audio ones if I can but if something like that is caused the game to completely cease to function that's just poor coding.
Mass Effect 2 has stopped working.

Are you using onboard sound or do you have a sound card?

Pretty sure it must be onboard.

Well, I have a similar problem. Sometimes the game "thinks" it should freeze. It helps wenn I use strg + alt + del, minimize the game and maximize it again. Afterwards the freeze is gone. In fights this is really annoying, because you are often dead.
The only point where this doesn´t work is when I am fighting the praetorians. If I look into their eyes, I get an error like many others.

It's so strange this is happening to so many people, but bioware say that they dont see it o.o;
Anyway, I fixed the "Has stopped working" issue, was a corrupt save file thing, I just had to take a copy of my saves, then delete the game with the saves(It dosnt delete the copy) then drag it back, then the game launched. Though my game still freeze up

I have this problem too. I reinstalled the game already 3 times. ME2 stops working right after I click "play". Yes I do have the newest drivers for my Graphics and my Audio card. I had the game installed as the German version but as the localization is very very bad I decided to switch to the canadian. So I did reinstall the game but first clicked on the canadian flag. Uninstalling was also a pain as ME was also uninstalled and I had to rebuild the Documents folder to get my old saves... This is no good customer service BIOWARE... In the German version the game did start but now it stops working right after clicking the Play button. So what to do?
PS: Is it possible that there are several different versions of ME2 out there and some can be installed in any language but cannot be played nevertheless as essential files are missing?
PPS: I reinstalled the German version and the game works again. So it seems that the version I bought gets into trouble if I want to install it on English. BUT now I feel betrayed as I payed for this game and wanted to have both versions at my disposal... So what is the solution ?

Batchall: i have had teh same problem as you.
only solution for me was to revert to a backup of my PC which i made 1 day before installing the german version. when i installed the english (canadian) version on my clean PC it worked.
before i tried all different kind of things : removing sku.ini, renaming files, uninstall and reinstall with englishc version.
it would not work. for some weird reason the only way in getting a working english version is install on a system that never had ME2 installed in a different language...
pretty buggy stuff what they releasedd here. i am quite disappointed in the technical quality.

WTF... Are you serious... Did I buy a beta key... Very disappointed... Thank you for the hint... Will try it out.
PS: Unfortunatelly this did not work for me. Maybe I will restore even an earlier state then I did but I dont know if this will help me... Thank you nevertheless. I guess I have to wait untill Bioware releases a patch.
PPS: Nope. Didnt work for me. Still stopping to work right after clickig the play button...

I ran into 3 problems while running ME2.
First:
the game doesn't even start. I clink play on the launcher option and the game crashes.
Fix:
corrupt installation files (or something), Installed the game with both dvds on the PC drives the installer doesn't prompt you to change the dvd and the game started up ok.
Second:
The game crashes on the first loading screen. The loading animation is about to start, then boom!
Fix:
playing 720dpi loading movies while trying to load the game. I downloaded an unofficial patch that replaced the loading movies by green squares (blank video). The game loaded fine. No animations during loadings though.
Third:
Game crashes occasionally for no apparent reason. Mass Effect 2 has stopped working error.
Fix:
This one I'm currently living with I had my CPU running over-clocked so I lowered it to the stock frequency and hopefully it will stop crashing so frequently.
But yeah, MAJOR issues with this game.

My ME2 crashed in Omega, in the marketplace. It shut down my pc, and now it won't even launch. I run off Vista Home Premium, 32-bit, 2 Quad CPU Q9300 @ 2.50 GHz, clock speed at 2494 MHz, Physical Memory 1.96GB, ATI Radeon HD 3600 series, VRAM: 256 MB, driver version: 6.0.1.5672, directx 10.0 (aug2008).
On another note, it took about 4 tries to install the game on my pc. But it was running smoothly until it crashed on Omega and now it won't even launch.
Please help. I think I have all the right requirements for this game, and I had no problems with ME1.

After dealing with an issue that had me looking down to the floor every time I shot a Blue Core for fear of the game crashing for sure.
Now I have to deal with a blank screen during the Reaper IFF mission. Still can't get pass it. X(
Goddamn this is frustrating as ****!!!
This game was definitely far from ready - at least the PC version...

I don't know if this will help but it worked for me. I had the same problem as the OP (ME2). I play in window screen instead of full screen and change the wide screen ratio from 16.10 to 16.9. Monitor Resolution varies. Some of my friends adjust screen resolution via game option, and found a big improvement although each player uses different monitor. I do crash still, but reduction was almost 95% in my 1st play through. In my 2nd play through, I only crashed about 3x through out the game. Not really a tech person but hope this helps for some of you out there.

Still no official response to this? :-(
I can start the game, see the introductions and even select a game to load but thats it. As soon as it starts loading a game it gaks. The game becomes (Not Responding) and a few seconds later the whole system starts to slow down and eventually locks the system solid unless I cancel the game out quickly.
This seems to have sarted with returning to the Normandy after recruiting to Justicar, when it started acting odd (stuttering) on the ship and thren crashed the next time I tried to dock the ship.
Unlikely its drivers since mine are up to date and this started 32 hours into the game, and went from working to hosed without anything else changing on the system.
Just in case, I reinstalled video and sound drivers, did a disk error check, rolled back a couple of saved games...all no joy. As soon as it tries to load any save....it dies.

I'm getting the same problems as a lot of others here it seems (and there's at least a dozen different threads about the same problems too... mayhaps they should actually *have* that "awesome" search facility in this forum...*cough*)
Computer details as below:
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Intel Core i7 920
6GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295
DirectX11
*Region - Australia*
I had no issue installing the game, or starting it originally. Downloaded all the DLC's (Collectors, Terminus, Blood Dragon, Zaeed and the Normandy Crash) and both them and my game are coming up as registered in my profile here (although if I mouse over the "My Games" tab it doesn't show ME2.)
And now the problems, starting with most recent:
Game crashes after "Press any key..."
Game freezes PC whilst flying towards system ring to fly to other systems in cluster (required reboot) - video frozen, audio continues, no key inputs recognised. *multiple instances*
Game freezes PC during Jack recruit mission video (required reboot) - video frozen, audio continues, no key inputs recognised.
Game freezes PC whilst flying towards system ring to fly to other systems in cluster (required reboot) - video frozen, audio continues, no key inputs recognised. *multiple instances*
Unable to load savegames with DLC loaded whilst offline
I can handle having to start the game whilst connected to the internet (even though it cost us 3 times as much over here than it does in the States) and I can deal with rebooting my machine because the game has crashed (F5, F5, F5...) but the game crashing to desktop after "Press any key..."? That gets my goat!
I had no problem last time I played, but now I can't even get to the main menu and the only thing I've done differently on my computer was watch a movie! So perhaps a Bioware rep could be so kind as to a) collate all the similar issues into a single thread,
add this esteemed search function they're supposedly rapturous about, and c) provide actual answers, even if they can't quite provide solutions!
Just my two cents worth... I'm now going to bash my head against a wall for a while, because it'll be less painful than this...
*Update* I've sent the question off to EA support, so hopefully I'll be able to get a response from them. I'll post what ever answer they can give me.

Gentleman, so far this site has helped me with all my issues.
It's a good compilation of bugs, errors and respective workarounds:
GamingNewsLink
As for you, "Dontcarewontpost" you seem to be having the same problem I did with the loading movies, try this:
1. run the game (do not press any key)
2. wait for play the movie (trailer)
3. start your game

I'm having the problem too...
I just bought a digital copy of the game, and I can't get beyond the launcher.
I press Play and nothing happens, except the pop-up window closes.
Oh, I'm on Windows 7.
Edit
Oh nevermind. :>
I installed as administrator and now it works!
