I have a few theories on the Collectors, but I didn't want to start three or four related threads. Instead, I thought I'd just pile them together.

1. According to Mordin, the Collectors are no longer even remotely Prothean aside from one tiny strand of DNA. They are almost entirely constructed of Reaper, inclusing implants allowing them to be possesed by their masters. This makes me think that Harbinger is not possessing the Collector General who is possessing his minions, but rather that he merely uses the CG to monitor them and operate ship functions and is in fact directly possessing the 'Super' Collectors from Dark Space. Remember how Saren's implants were directly possesed by Sovereign? I believe he was using the same tech used to directly control Collectors. Also, many have complained that ME2 never really had a villain per se. I disagree. Harbinger is constantly addressing Shephard and shows a direct interest in the hero by killing him, hunting his allies, and laying traps for him. The Collectors are not a proper race but a mere extension of Harbinger's will,

2. Harbinger is not the character's name, but a human misinterpretation of his various declarations. Like Sovereign, this is merely a mortal placeholder for the character's real name.

3. The Human-Reaper was meant to replace Sovereign for the next attempt at retaking the Citadel. Otherwise, they would have simply waited until the Reaper fleet had crushed all resistance before getting down to the business of Reaproduction.

A question: Has anyone noticed a second Collector ship at any point? Judging from the size and technology of one, they have only ever needed one.

Thoughts and responses?

Harbinger is what it calls itself, whenever the reaper takes over a Collector it says "I am the Harbinger of your destruction", granted maybe its not its name but its what it is constantly designating itself as.

The whole human reaper thing finally explains why the reapers need organics, though I liked the plot of the first one if the reapers just harvested the technology they could easily just have husks like the collectors keep making it for them while they sleep. Needing organic life itself, life they find worthy at that to be combined into a reaper puts a nice hat on all that.

If you use subtitles, you can see 'harbinger' is not capitalized and he simply means that he is the harbinger of your destruction. Soverign's name isn't Vanguard, after all.

And I agree with the organic explanation, I just think its very odd they wouldn't just wait until after they's conquered the galaxy.

Response to 1: This is what I think of the Collectors. They're similar to the Keepers, engineered by the Reaper's for their own purposes. If similar Reaper implant tech is being used to control the Collectors, then it explains why the possessed Collector burns into a bunch of embers. It does, however, not explain why Harbinger can possess one Collector after another. Sovereign's defenses went offline when his "avatar" was killed, but he was under the strain of Alliance attacks. It's also likely that he's circumventing this load through the Collector General.

Response to 3: I figure that Reapers aren't actually the giant ships that we see, but something inside a core of aforementioned giant ships. I think it's possible that it was planned that the Human-Reaper would a) take the place of Sovereign, or B) integrate itself into the Derelict Reaper, after repairs. I would not be surprised that if there were a Reaper that was created from Prothean genetic material. I suspect that if this were the case, then Harbinger is this Reaper.

Probably because Collectors are specifically designed for being posssesed and Harbinger doesn't have a fleet attacking him. I also suspect Sovereign was putting far more energy into his avatar than Harbinger because the only thing that mattered was opening the relay and it couldn't have been easy making Saren's seleton move like that and shoot energy bolts.
