Wow, the hyperbole on these forums can be quite amazing at times.
As someone who posted on the old Mass Effect forums quite frequently, I feel quite confident in saying not everyone who was a devoted fan of the first game feels like ME2 is a disappointment; In fact, it may just edge out the original ME as my favourite game this console generation.

This.

Apparently, accourding to the OP, anyone who was a diehard ME1 fan is required to be disappointed by ME2. I absolutely love ME1 and I'm enjoying the hell out of ME2. I don't feel alienated by the game changes BioWare decided to go with on this game, rather I think they've made a lot of it a great deal more fun. ME to me was always much more about story than gameplay to me anyway, and in that respect ME2 most definitely does not disappoint.

I bought ME2 expecting a sequel to ME1. Unfortunately, to me, it seems like a whole new game (that just so happens to follow on with the story).

Before I make my list, I've only got up to Omega so far, so I'm basing some of the below on what I have read on these forums.

- Movement is different (no crouch button, different cover button/system), can't turn AT ALL during storm (do like that you can do it out of combat now though).
- Interacting is different (different interact button, different "there's something to interact with over here" system - hard to notice where the thing is sometimes)
- Weapons are different (no finding new guns/upgrades/armour, just base weapons that you upgrade)
- Menu system is different (no dedicated Journal/Map/Inventory/Codex buttons), no scroll wheel in anything it seems either which makes browsing tedious.
- Squad HUD is changed (looks like they've tried to streamline it by making the weapons options popups, but it just looks cramped and a bit poo)
- Space exploration is different (no landing on different planets and exploring (from what I've read), this was one of the things I loved about ME1, you could get out and about in the galaxy!)

Seems to me that most of the game is different, and in my opinion, not the good kind of different.

Will keep playing for the storyline, but ME2 could have been so much better if it had been more like ME1.

Well isn't a sequel exactly a story that follows one predecessing it? How could ME2 be ME1... it's obviously a new one made 2 years after. You really wanted a Mass Effect 1.5? That's something that really bugs me, people complain when it's the same, people complain when it changes... go figure.

What was the point of this thread? I mean really. Did you expect anything to come of it aside from a pointless flame war that Bioware likely won't even look at?

Anyway, ME2 is the best game I've played in years.

In comparison to the ones who are content with the game, the majority that not only post here but on other forums are not happy with the result of ME2. Hopefully Bioware will take note that alienating their existing fanbase to "bring in players that didn't play the original", in other words, shooter fans, is not a smart move, whether it's from an ethics standpoint or business.

Hell no. I LOVE the game. Have you read any of the reviews? Almost all over nine. It's nearly a ten for me, just hoping they do just as good a job with ME 3. You don't like, go play something you can handle like Dungeons and Dragons.

Ethics? How the hell is that uneathical you ****ing idiot?

More importantly Mass Effect 2 has sold close to 2 million copies, if the 1up article is to be believed. Frankly I think their marketing is paying off...

I was dissapointed by the simplified RPG elements, but all the same ME 2 was a great game and I enjoyed it much more than the predecessor.

Playing ME2 made me realize I HATED ME1, I hated the tank, I hated guns overheating, I hated the fact that my inventory was filled with 100 striker pistols and I couldn't carry anything new, god so much I hated.

I loved ME1, but ME2 might be the best entertainment experience I've ever had. I love all the squadmates. I especially love the sidequests. My first playthough is going on 49+ hours and I'm no where near the end.

And what about those of us who have played several Bioware games, have played RPGs extensively and love Mass Effect 2? Have any instructions on what we should do? Clearly, we need your guidance because our opinions are simply not as valid as those you agree with. And of course anyone who likes the game simply HAS to be a fanboy. It must be so satisfying to see the world in such black and white terms.

I've been playing BioWare RPGs for several years and absolutely love ME2. Perhaps you should take a bit of your own advice, and go back to another RPG developer (good luck finding one on par with BioWare), and stop giving BW your money if you're so dissatisfied.

I loved ME1, and I love ME2 even more. I like RPGs, and I like shooters. I like any game that is good.

Is that okay nowadays, or did I miss a memo?

According to the internets:
A sequel is a work in literature, film, or other media that chronologically portrays events following those of a previous work.

So yes. ME2 is a sequel in that the story follows on from ME1.

The gameplay however, in my opinion, is completely different.
Yes of course you want a new, shinier, updated game, but you still want the same controls, the same feel to the menu, the same (or at least similar) weapons/armour system.

Yes, changes are needed to keep the game nice and new and interesting, but how about making smaller changes, and not changing things that were perfectly fine in the old game?

P.S I love the story, that couldn't be better. I sat here in shock when the thing at the beginning happened, it's just the new game mechanics I take issue with.

Problem is, Bioware actually listened to the people in the forum. Granted, some may have prefered some things to have been worked on instead of being radically changed, still they listened and made changes they thought would be better for the experience. They all have their reasons for the changes and I'm sure it went through long brainstormings.

I dislike the game as many parts of the story have been simplified ot horrible standards. "Give me a discount" "ok" thats some true renegade right there. "Take your own life" "no thanks" "do it" "oh all right" even more renegade. Some fo the story just makes no sense and seems to have been written with no thought. The interactions are downright horrendous compared to ME1.

Yes there are things missing from the game and yes that sucks BUT

Better to leave stuff out than do a 1/2 ass job of it.

Most of what they left out I don't realy miss.

Could Bioware have made a the RPG elements better in ME2?  ....... Yes
Could ME1 be vastly improved on? ........ Yes

Are they going to? ........ No, because they don't need to. RPG is hard labour intensive stuff and they don't need to because ME2 is head and shoulders over anything else I have played.

Did ME2 execute well what they chose to put into the game  ... story, character and cinematic feel?  YES (except perhaps biotics)

That is the best you can hope for these days.

I love RPGs and hated Dragon Age,  too confined and tedious.  Good RPGs are very hard to make and expensive.

Bioware did a good job of focusing on what was important for playing excitement, character and plot.  Sure they could have added more RPG elements and even some decent puzzles aspects.  They didn't.  The last game I played that had decent puzzle aspects was Myst Revelation, and that was a long time ago.

ME2 and ME1 could have been masterpieces if they had compelling RPG and puzzle elements.  Imagine archeological investigation Protean ruins to actually figure out their technology, like you did in parts of Myst Revelation.

It just can't happen because the bar of the average gamer is so low that spending $$$ to please the few who like puzzles and RPG is not going to make $$$.

ME1 wasn't an RPG either ..... it wasn't even close.  It was still a great game.  It was a graphic movie with you at the helm.  Thats what it is.  The last RPG was Morrowind and perhaps DA (barely).  There will probably not be many more.  Too hard to make well.

Do you like plot, cinematic style or RPG.  Choose 2 if you are very lucky.

Gaming used to be an art .... now it is a business .....  knowing that it is lucky that even games as good as ME1 and 2 come out.

Personally I salute them ........

I bet you didn't reach level 60 in ME2 with it's slow leveling up system.  Seriously you guys don't have to lie like ME2 is without it's problems, it clearly is with the many threads of people being dissapointed with it.

I bet you I can't find a thread on Naughty Dog's forums of people upset about UC2. :P

Well, UC2 didn't really take any risks, so if you liked the first, it's hard not to like the second. It's lack of risk taking did not go unnoticed however, as it got an 80 from one reviewer, and plenty of 90s, though its aggregate score is the same as ME2, a 96. I think ME2 has issues, but less issues than just about any other game. Some people will think it has more, but that is their opinion on the matter, what some view as a problem I may not.
