Okay, not sure if this will be a touchy subject, or a stupid question.   Religion is often bashed online..and I know a huge majority are not Christians, and there is quite a bit of Christianity bashing on the internet, especially forums.

I am proud of my Christianity and not afraid to put it right out there.   However, my question is this, does your religion and beliefs play a role in the character you play and how you play it (In this case directly related to how you will play your DA character, so as not to be off-topic)?

Very curious about this and it's not something that typically comes up.

Great question I'm a christian and never realy thought about it but yes it does play a role in my characters, not as much in their class and talents, but in the decisions and role in the story.

My lack of religion most certainly does not play a role.

Not really. Roleplaying games are about escaping real life for a little bit, so my own personal beliefs play little part in my characters when I assume their persona. While my own personality gets drawn upon to play a number of my characters (typically, a very small facet), I tend to not be myself when I have a character.

Short answer: Nope. My multi-layered belief system plays no part in my characters. Ever.

Really not, I often play evil characters and I'm a very nice person IRL with very strong values.

No. My atheism doesn't affect my characters. I've played religious fanatics, religious moderates and non-believers. This is about their world, not ours.

I was raised Catholic, but I consider my characters a reflection of my own morals rather than what religion tried to teach me. So in my case, no, religious background plays no role in how my characters act.

Nope...Im playing games first for fun, second just to "escape" from real life even for few moments. So no, the only thing that maybe plays a part in my character are my own personality and my imagination.

Not really, probably since i'm an Athiest and not religious at all. But it usually seems that in games, i play the opposite of my real-life self. Usually, i'm not a very tough and generally mature and nice but in games i'm a nut case, evil guy.

my lack of religion doesn't play a role-

but if i'm playing a character who is a wizard or templar of course i will play it in line with what religion the character would or should have.

Ie- the mage most likely will worship dark gods and demons.

the templar most likely will somewhat worship the dominant religion associated with that type.

if i do do a templar run- i will most likely make the templar very closely resemble the historical templars and all thier human sucesses and failings.

Does religion play a role in the character I create? Yes.

Yes, it does. I don't just mean real life religion. I take inspiration from several religions when I design my characters, part from Islam, part from Hindu, part from Taoism, all depending on what I wish to roleplay. I don't narrow myself to just one, but the one I find most appeal is norse mythology.

Why? It doesn't hold any good morals or are even all that well-told stories. It's about gods having flaws and acting mortal and stupidly. It is an echo of what people were like back in those days and it's very honest. It doesn't try to play on some higher field, it seems to know exactly what it is.

A bunch of stories about debauchery and getting drunk. I can get behind that.

Yes. For my first character, I generally model the character after myself (I pick the things -I- would do etc)

Wow great replies, good to see such a wide variety of examples.

Sorry to the atheists, the question didn't really fit there...obviously if you have no religion, it doesn't play a role.
Nice to see some other Christians out there too. I have nothing against any other religions or lack thereof, just to put that out there. I am no better than anyone else, and do not judge...but it's nice to have people around who believe what you believe.

Thanks for the replies...very interesting stuff.

@Mordaedil:
Very cool, I like that idea, taking from other religions..also a good idea to do, so your character will fit the world better.

I guess this could have been more of a morals question rather than religion. I have high morals because of my religion, but I definately incorporate that into my characters. I have a really hard time playing evil characters, or doing senseless things..even if I try. Very much like my real self.

I was also raised catholic but did get over it pretty quick when I turned 18.

I don´t like being told what to believe or how my morales should look like, not in RL nor ingame.

My character still ends up as the goody-two-shoes but thats me using common sense not giving in to some morale code.

I rarely play a religious figure but if I do, I usually go to the extreme. but one thing is for sure. I don't like religious followers.

I think this is an interesting question regardless of if your beliefs are based on a religion or not everyone has a moral code and a set of beliefs.

Myself I will often play through the first time making moral decisions as I would make them myself. But on later plays through I like to try playing characters who's morals and beliefs are nothing like mine.

Same here. Being an atheist, I usually play my first character as myself. If it is really a big plot point (such as in this game with the Chantry, and in the Witcher with the OOTFR) I usually also do a run as a believer, to get maximum value out of the game, but the majority of my characters are typically non-religious. I just find it difficult to place myself into the mind of a believer, and the way they reason is odd and uncomfortable.

EDIT: And yes, I do have a moral compass of my own.

Interesting question :)

I think it can of depends on whether you draw on yourself at all when creating a character or creating a fictional persona outside of yourself. If it's the latter I can see how your own religion or morals have nothing to do with your character.

Personally my characters are extensions of myself, I try to make them look like me and think somewhat like me, they will have different nuances and do and say things I never would but generally they are based on what kind of person I tend to be. My spiritual beliefs are based on neo-paganism and pantheism, the belief that nature is divine or divinity itself. So naturally the character I am the most drawn to in this game are the Dalish elves. That said I also have a strong leaning towards a magi elf.

:D So make of that what you will but I think it's an interesting link!

It plays a role by not playing a role in the game if you know what I mean:P

As others have stated, no religion does not play any part in my roleplaying I go by own moral code although adapted to fit the morality and beliefs of the games universe. (Mostly)

No, my religion won't affect my style of playing - at least not consciously. I'm playing a role - a character in Ferelden and there is no Christianity. So I'll try to behave like a person from Ferelden would - guided by the religious believes and traditions of Ferelden (which I unfortunately don't know that much about at the moment).
