My morals play a part in my decision making process in game not my religion. So I would suppose the answers no.

Being raised by a Jewish mother, naturally I quit that religion and went to agnosticism for a time. I found a spiritualism (not a religion, though it tends to get lumped into such because so many follow it) which happened to fit me perfectly. I discovered it after some time spent overseas, and it fit, so well that I am quite literally days from my 'ordination' as an enlightened one and spiritual guide/teacher. I am a Buddhist, but quite frankly, Taoism tends to run cold for me. I am one of the few Anglo Shintoist Buddhists who have reached the stage where becoming an official "priest" or "monk" is imminent.

That being said, neither my religion growing up, nor my spiritualism currently, play a major part in determining my morality or belief system in a game. My 20+ years as a P&P RPG'er, as well as my 16 years as a CRPG'er, make such notions an effort in toto, reductio ad absurdium.

The concept that anything I happen to do in a *game* having more than a vague impression from reality as conceptualized by myself (I can't speak for the rest of you, of course; and there's my Buddhist belief system creeping in again) seems to violate the very notion of the reason I play any form of RPG. Role-playing is about stepping out of yourself, and into the shoes of someone different from oneself, sometimes merely a bit, sometimes an entire reversal of beliefs and morality. The level of the challenge is the draw, not necessarily the involved morality play, nor the psychosocial and sociopolitical aspects. If you are not challenged by the character you play, if you do not stretch yourself and your imagination to keep the character and the story intact, where would be the point in even picking up any form of RPG, be it a P&P or on the computer, I ask you?

I do understand where morality plays a part for most, and that for those whose morality was shaped by a formal religion, the religion plays a part in morality, which in turn plays a part in decisions, but for those who play RPGs for the challenge of stepping out of their standard lives, their comfortable realities, and into something at least partly, if not completely, unlike themselves and their real morals and belief systems, trusting their own integrity to keep the story as a story they immerse themselves in willingly and joyfully.... isn't this the reason why we originally began playing RPGs of any sort in the first place?

Actually the religion in which I was raised is an obstacle in most tradition RPGs regarding the character I play. There is no hardcoded dualistic concept of good and evil. No human or beast is considered inherently evil. Thus role playing according to my religion would lead to a very perplexing experience.

Which is why when I create a character I took at religion in the setting. If that appeals to me, and occasionally a diety does, I make my character accordingly. Even as a Paladin, I could never worship Tyr or Helm. I had to go for a more "happy" god like Lathander. A personal quirk.

Okay, not sure if this will be a touchy subject, or a stupid question.   Religion is often bashed online..and I know a huge majority are not Christians, and there is quite a bit of Christianity bashing on the internet, especially forums.

I am proud of my Christianity and not afraid to put it right out there.   However, my question is this, does your religion and beliefs play a role in the character you play and how you play it (In this case directly related to how you will play your DA character, so as not to be off-topic)?

Very curious about this and it's not something that typically comes up.

I'm agnosis... personally think religions as a whole is evil and really dont understand how someone in the 21th century can still belive all this crap... but well that,s a diferent story... I try to avoid religion as much as possible in game, try to make character who dont belive in any gods in my games most of the time, unleast i have some cool religions in the game and play some kind of priest character... (I like Shar in Forgotten Realm for exemple) But most of the time like i said i avoid it

I'm sure that people's personal beliefs with have an influence in the decisions they make in the game. Also the characteristics that you attribute to your character will have an influence. And the story itself has a religious component to it. However, I would like to thing that the game itself is flexible enough that you can be true to your own style of play. Like the developers have been indicating, if there are parts of the game that are offensive (i.e. romantic relationships), you don't have to pursue those storylines. If you want to play the religious angle seriously, fine, if not, fine.

What benefits him more, of course.

Funny, I'd say whichever side logic and critical reasoning leads to supporting (assuming there are any).

Or whichever side supports Cephalopods. :)

I think subconsciously it does have a slight impact. I'm somewhere between an atheist and agnostic and most of my characters views will be similar unless the setting has gods that are proven to exist. Even when playing Civ4, I think I underrate and make slightly less use of religion than I should.

I think religion and religous belief wouldn't matter much in this game, mainly because none of our real-world religions are presented in the game. Thedas is its own intellectual property and it has its own religion, so you're certainly free to be an 'atheist' in that setting or a 'devout' follower of the Chantry's teachings. There's no Islam for a Muslim like me or Christianity or Judiasm or Buddhism, so real world believers won't have much outlet for their real world beliefs in-game, which I think is a great thing.

I've always seen video games as neutral ground, and they shoudl rightly maintain this status even where religion is concerned.

Whichever side his leaders make him more than likely. Otherwise, it's impossible to say.

For me, doesn't play a part. I never really put the two together. Also morals don't come from religion. To whoever said that. Anyway, nice to see a thread involving the subject that's not a flame fest by the middle lof the first page.
