Interesting that I read the OP's complaints about DA:O last night, then today I get my copy of PC Gamer in the mail, and it has named DA:O both RPG and Game of the Year.

Why is this antagonistic and clearly useless thread still running?

Grow the hell up and let it die...

I didn't read all eleven pages of posts. But to the O.P., this game rules. I loved it. If this game was an afterthought, then I can't even fathom what a real game from them is!

I was somewhat dissapointed in DAO. Most of that dissapointment though was in the companions. I only liked two of them really. Out of those two I only Dug one. I liked Leliana.. Alister was friggin Awesome. Everyone else was just eh to bad.

Other then this I'd say it was a pretty cool game.

Mass Effect? I fell in love with the first one, the 2nd is fantastic. I dig all of the companion chars.. some much more then others (Yes I'm a crazy Tali fan... And Legion... and Garrus... And Tali again). Companions make such a huge diffrence for me I've found. Beyond that, Mass Effect also feels so much more damn personal.

I have high hopes for DAO 2 though... We'll see. As for the first one. *shrug* I dont even know if I'll get the ex pac. I've played DAO once and haven't felt much urge for a second time.

With that said, I don't agree that DAO seems like an after thought... I think they put a lot of work into it. But it's a diffrent taste all together. I don't begrudge the graphics so much, though I do wish that they worked on animations for emotions and such more. For me, I don't think DAO would have to change much to get me to love it. It's close. It needs two big things. Good companion chars (The ones in ME2 are just damned amazing. Friggin Amazing.) and make it more personal. The Origin stories were a great idea, but you ended up losing so much ability to make it personal by spreading yourself out like that I think.

I'm having fun with mass effect 2, it's a great game. Dragon Age was far more my cup of tea though.

But considering I still think the Ultima series and Planescape: Torment are the best CRPGs I've played, you'll see how little the super pretty graphics mean to me

Dragon Age = more immersive, better character development, better plot

Mass Effect 2 = Better visuals

Half of the time developing DA was making the engine, actually. I think if DA had better animation and graphics it would be as good, as well as giving the PC more personality (no, NOT VOICE OVER) with more facial animations or focus on them in conversations.

Hmm... I guess it just takes all kinds.  I couldn't get immersed into DAO at all...I did horribly into ME.  Disliked the chars in DAO, love them in ME.  Plot?  Eh... didn't feel very epic...  *shrug*  ME's plot feels very original, grabs my heart kind of feeling.

 Agreed.

I really wish a big company would come along and buy Bioware up. Then maybe they can release some quality games.

*cough cough* I think they're called EA.....and they already did.

I think THAT is what is causing any mess you find. Getting bought by a big company guarantees nothing.

True enough, so did I. It does depend on individual taste, but FO 3 did not impress me. Played it once, and it's now sitting on my shelf. It impressed me so little that I never even had any kind of urge to buy the add-ons.

Perhaps it's because I really liked FO/FO2, perhaps because it reminded me too much of Oblivion, or a combination of many factors. I don't know, but while it was fun to run a round in the wastes of the DC area and shoot stuff, it made no lasting impression on me.

If you stuck to the "rails" of the primary quest, and used a lot of instant "Fast-Travel" between the locations (as in DA) you'd be missing out more than 50% of FO3, and you will be disappointed if you expected to be "read out" a story, as it were.

Unfortunately, some of the best parts of FO3 fall nowhere near the main story's path, and you can't tell anyone about them without spoiling it for the player. :(

Let's just say that most of those so-called "side-quests" in FO3 are more involved and intricate than anything in DA, and let you play 100% Evil if you wanted to.

Indeed, some of those quests would simply not be possible in DA's pointy-clicky system (like trailing an NPC all the way from one end of the map to the other to discover a secret cache of pre-war tech, while defending him from any enemies you come across and not letting him see you, and that's not even "marked" as a quest.)

Perhaps we have a different opinion on what a quality game is... but I certainly hope they won't be bought up by any big company. Imho Bioware has been creating quality games for quite some time now I loved NWN, Jade Empire, Dragon Age and I even enjoyed KOTOR.
I also think the size of the company doesn't make a good game, the opposite is often true.

ha i try to forget aswell as im not the greatest ea lover in the world but i digress purely from a selfish rpg lovers point of view i wish bioware and bethesda merged into one company which was rumoured to be the case a while back but unfortunately nothing materialised and ea got there claws in (shakes head in disappointment) )

I really don't see the problem with Dragon Age at all. It's an excellent game, ME2 just happens to be better.

This.

Apples and oranges still, though. But I definetly enjoyed the ME2 orange more than the DA apple.

But I see NO REASON why DAO2 cannot be as good/better than ME2. Except for the whole annoying silent protagonist thing.
