Mass Effect 2 PC, Collectors Edition, physical disk version 1.00

I am getting a crash in-game when I return from orbeting a planet I just scanned and harvested, to the space view. The game hangs, but in the background a "Mass effect 2 has stopped working" dialog pops up. I have to press ctrl+alt+del to be able to close it, but the application keeps running (audio keeps working as well), but does not dipslay anything. I have to then manually kill the application and restart to continue the game.
