The reasoning why the Collector's were interested in Shepard and the people he was involved with? I understand their interest with human colonys, but they never really explained why they wanted Shepard.

That's what the comic mini-series is for. We'll see. The second issue comes out next week or something I believe.

They were under the control of Reapers. They explain it in the game. Shepard took out one of the Reapers so the Reapers let the Collectors out to get him.

Yeah, the reapers are pretty pissed at Humanity as a whole, but they're REALLY pissed about shep still being alive. So they try their hardest to kill you.

To use his DNA in the human reaper.

*End game spoilers*

Wouldn't you want the body and mind of the very human who thwarted your attempts to wipe out all advanced sentient life to serve as one of the building blocks for your next Reaper brethren? Shepard is the best of what humanity has to offer, and would probably be a valuable asset to the Reapers if forcibly integrated into the personality and mind of the human Reaper.

Less pissed, and more that they took it as a sign that humanity was worthy / capable of giving rise to a Reaper.

He is the best Humanity can offer and killed one of their own. They'd want his genes badly, better than a few hundred-thousand colonists.

They don't want to kill Shepard. In fact the Leader Drones will say things like, "I don't want to kill you Shepard, but I will if I have to." and in the last fight says "Kill everyone, take Shepard alive."
