Revanants are a ****, especially in the Brecialian Forest when your going for the Juggernaut armour and the have skeleton minons. Keep in mind that the first one you face is always going to be the hardest, as thats when it scales to your level. After I beat the first one, the rest are always easier. Best way for me is to use affliction hex, then cone of cold to freeze, drain life, archer with special arrows, and melee the crap out it with warriors. It will fall.
Revenants.

My strategy is to force field the revenant until the minions are dead, then concentrate on killing it. With Shale, Dogmeat a rogue, and me an arcane warrior, the revenants are pretty easy. Unless I don't remember to keep watch on the revenant and heal my party while killing minions that is.

My strategy is to run in solo with no armor on and hack them to death.
They're much easier at higher levels.
Btw, to the other poster above, the one in Denerim is a random encounter. I'm not sure if it still has a chance of spawning if you ignore it the first time, but the only way to test it is to keep moving between zones in Denerim.

Revenant fights are tough but a couple of tips (and no I don't use force field except to stop an enemy when my mage is getting overwhelmed). Higher level revenants are resistant to cold magic so cone of cold does not always work on them (it does work on the one in Redcliffe most of the time). I usually do ranged attacks with my archer and mage, have my tank in melee and dart in and out with a rogue (stealty, backstab, dirty fighting, ect). Use melee talents for chance at stunning the revenant. My mage usually uses a basic heal spell to keep my melee characters healthy, so very few healing pots, maybe 1-2 mana potions.
In the Redcliffe fight I have my archer draw the other enemies one by one into my party ambush until only the revenant is left. With an archer and a mage you often drop the other enemies before they are even close enough for your melee characters to engage. I let the knights in after I am all finished.

If I can kill a Revenant, anyone can. But you will need at least 1 mage besides Wynne, and that mage will need at least Cone of Cold, Force Field, and Misdirection Hex. Misdirection Hex is optional but makes the fight much easier. Alistair should be up in the Revenant's face, rogues should be behind the Revenant for backstabs, and the mage should be on one of the Rev's sides, left or right, doesn't matter. Put Wynne a few inches back, but not too far because the Rev will try to pull her. It's annoying, as Wynne would say. Have the mage cast Misdirection Hex. If the Rev resists, cast cone of cold to freeze him. Everytime CoC is off cooldown, use it. When the hex is off cooldown, use it. There's no need to freeze him if the hex is on him, though. Have the mages pop a lesser lyrium potion if their mana is below 30%. If the Rev is resisting everything the mage is throwing, like in my first game... well, all I can say that as a rule, when my mage's willpower gets to 25, I put everything into Magic from then on. Not Wynne, though, I keep her willpower and magic even. She's a healer, after all.
When it's not just a Revenant you're fighting, put forcefield on him and take down the adds first. Make everyone focus fire on one add at a time until they're all dead.

I just used rock potion and a heal spells for most of them. And they get easier as you level as you get better armor for your tank and your to hit goes up because of items, stats and abilities. When I face my first Revenant or two I found that using range weapon was actually doing more damage because their to hit debuff aura was making me miss him most of the time at melee range. By level 13-14 that stop being an issue but I did have two bards in my group.

I must have played through five or six wipes on that first Revenant before realizing that I could open the gate on the other side prior to clearing out the courtyard.

well with my mage i just did glyph of paralysis and inferno against revenants and it was really easy
however, my rogue does a ton of backstab damage but i can't seem to hit the revenant
whenever i try to backstab him i usually don't get the backstab

In my current nightmare walkthrough I have two dual wielding warriors with dual striking, momentum and berserk active. By themselves, they rip through any single target with ease. When supported with telekinetic weapons and death hex, they are absolute monsters. I also bring along Leliana with the bard song that increases damage and critical hit chance. While I'm not sure that's all that useful, it does make them glow pretty pink and someone has to open locks and look pretty.
If a revenant comes with friends, throw a forcefield on him first so you can deal with the little squishy white fella's first. It's standard procedure of mine for any boss fight.

If you have 2 mages in party with cone of cold you can cycle between them to keep the revenant in permafrost. Many of them are immune to cold damage but will oddly enough still be frozen solid. Then let a fighter or rogue stand beside it and box it to death, just for the humiliation it must entail.

A high defense tank and everyone else using bows or staves, is usually enough to take out a revenant. Save mana for heals if you have a mage.

Revenants and a few other boss baddies really make me mad. Not because they are hard, I like reloading a few times, heck I'm a perfectionist, even if I win, I sometimes reload just to see if I could have done the battle more perfectly.
What I dislike is the anti melee thing. Seems like many critters(too many) are made for one tank to engage and everyone else to stand far away.

Good advice here. I flipped the switch and RedCliff was suprirsingly easy. I also owned the Denerim one that caught me by suprise...mostly COC. However, I tried the same tactic on the Revenent in the Circle Tower and it completely smoked me. My rogue could barely scratch through its DR and my mage got sucked in pwned quickly because Alistair couldn't keep aggro. Now that I have force shield, I think that I will be more careful about having Alistair gain aggro, bring someone else beside my main to range and have Morigan alternate COC/frost and heal Alistair... I was level 10 when I tried and it was ugly but maybe it will go better with these tactics.

The only revenant I couldn't beat was the one from a random encounter in Denerim. I was level 7 at the time and with Morrigan as my only mage lacking coc and ff both. Gave up after 10 tries. I could get him down to 40-50% healh a few times but that was it.

In my experience, they are easily hexed. Forget stunning him with pummell or knocking him. Paralysis Glyph works nicely and buys some time... It all depends on what kind of party you put together. My biggest problem is with my mages not doing anything with their regular ranged shots...
