There is a medal for achieving 250 on a single swing.....I am now at level 18 with over 80 in str and only getting in the 100s for damage...using a greatsword from the citadel with 3 max runes.....what do I need to do to get the 250 or is it even achievable?

It's very achievable. There are multiple ways you can do it:

Mage:

Mana Clash

Entropic Death

Rogue:

Arrow of Slaying

Warrior:

Final Blow on a 2h warrior

Final Blow?

Warrior has death blow and perfect striking

2H has sweep, critical strike and destroyer...what is final blow?

Are you talking about final blow from the Berserker?

Yeah, Final Blow is the last Berserker talent. It converts all your remaining stamina into damage for one strike.

Also, bring a mage with hexes to debuff your targets for you. You'll hit for bigger.

If you can afford it, get the Chasind Great Maul. It does way more damage than any greatsword an has higher armor penetration. Then use Final Blow on some white enemy, preferably right at the beginning of a fight when you stamina is full. Oh, and don't have any sustaineda abilities besides Berserk running when you try this. Every sustain will decrease your stamina and thus your damage.

Might still take some tries to get 250+ of damage. If you plan to re-play the game as archer or mage, I'd suggest leaving the heavy hitter achievement to one them.

...my single highest melee hit with a two-handed warrior is 332 ...this is on a semi-willpower based templar-berserker using final blow and starfang greatsword...though I could get higher if the character was built a little differently...!

To clarify final blow converts every two points of stamina you have left into one point of damage.

Telekinetic Weapons, Mark of Death and Sunder Armor can help set you up as well.

Of course warriors can also use arrow of slaying...

A mage can also get the acheivement with nightmare (sleep+horror) and virulent walking bomb, but you need to add hexes in with those spells.

Actually I managed to get the achievement with a mage last night by pure luck wasn't even aiming for it. I did a simple virulent walking bomb being buffed by spell might. Completely through me off. I was at lvl 10 and had only pumped magic since the start apart from 1 point in wis and cun.

OK, thanks will try it....where do I find the chasind great maul?

My build is a templar berserker with almost every point in str. Even when i start with my stamina on max, I am not getting there....do I need to rebalance (go back to an earlier load) and put more willpower into my build and less str?

Mana clash often does 400+ damage.

No, you don't need more willpower. I guess you could equip gear with stamina, though, like the blood dragon armor and such. Use telekenetic weapons and mark of death on your target first. You probably just need a better weapon.

Mage:

Virulent Walking Bomb (requires no hexes, nor does it require mark of death)

Yep, unlocked it at lvl 12 myself. Had very little useable mana, but very high spellpower.

Spell Wisp, Spell Might, Arcane Mastery

I think a mage can unlock it earlier than any other class.

I unlocked it at lvl10 with arrow os slaying. Just go to fade, theres place with 2 wisp wraiths. While i did max ~240dmg to mages/priest there, wisp got pwned with 351dmg on first try.

If you install the mod Combat Tweaks 3.0, you can also achieve it with Critical Strike vs a yellow named enemy with less then 50% health (provided that he has over 500 hp total).

I got it a little while back on a mage with the Storm of the Century combo. I think it was the room in Broken Circle next to the cutscene templar and demon. pretty sure it was on hard at that point, too.

You only need 67 spellpower to unlock heavy hitter with virulent walking bomb.

Does it need to be done to a single target?

I didn't notice when I got the achievement, but the only way I can see having done it was when I threw a Fireball into a room filled with low-level guards. I hit at least 9 of them at once, doing a combined total of damage well over 250.

I agree with most of this... except for the first part.

The Chasind Great Maul does NOT do  "way more damage" than any greatsword.   it's comperable to   Starfang.      According to the   "Damage figure"  in my  inventory screen,  Having the Chasind Great Maul equipped  was giving me a damage  number about  5 or 6  higher than Starfang.  But  when I was  using the two, I  didn't notice any difference in the damage i was actually doing.

No, what makes The Chasind Great Maul  better than Starfang is  the massive Stamina bonus it bestows.  (+75!)    Which is pretty darn ok,   Especially when we're discussing achieving 250+ damage using the Berserker's final blow ability.
