Hate film grain and motion blur, was so happy on installing ME 1 that it could be turned off, first thing I did. But always glad there are options for people that do like them.

I hate film grain - it makes the game quality look like a piece of crap.

As long as it is not overdone

IMHO, in ME 1 it was slightly overdone when you turned it on, although it indeed made it 'filmy', and in ME 2 I even haven't notice it LOL

I'm going to go ahead and click the token collecting links of everyone who likes film grain, in fact I'm going to tell all my friends to do so! Because we, who have sophisticated taste should stick together!
Joking aside though, I love the film grain effect, game feels way too plastic without it. Motion blur makes it somewhat more real, too.

Film grain in ME2. Didn't look right in ME1.

I honestly was not able to tell if film grain was on on Mass Effect 2 (360). D:
It wasn't too bad on Mass Effect 1, i personally liked it.

In ME1 - on! I can't stand the game without the film grain. It makes everything so much more atmospheric, and yes - less plastic. But unfortunately people seem to like plastic and super duper uber high resolutions, so in Mass Appeal 2 it was cut down.

I turn it off for my Paragon playthroughs but I leave it on for the Renegade ones. it kinda adds to the "shades of gray" atmosphere

Film grain is still used in alot of movies nowadays to correct the damn squares popping up in the screen.

i wish they did what valve did in L4D1, the film grain only came at certain points that they wanted to look cinematic.

I always turned it off in ME1, but I keep it for ME2 as it is much more subtle.

I liked in ME1, though it was a bit overdone. In ME2, I also played with it, but thought it was a bit too subtle - I would've preferred it a little bit more pronounced, as I like the atmosphere it gives.

It wasn't a "film grain" in ME1, it was blasted film granules. Like running through hail storm. In ME2 the grain is by far more "finer" and doesn't stick out as bad. I've played with it both on and off. I do like the detailed pic more, but at times in some cinematic episodes the grain adds a small effect.
As for motion blur, then I always take it off. Because it's stupid. I don't know about you but when I walk around then things don't blur or distort in my view. Maybe when you walk around, both drunk and high on something, then things look like that but for me that's a very silly effect. And then those sun flares - I cannot possibly understand why this gets so often put into the games when they want to achieve realism. I mean, come on, those sun flares appear like so only for cameras and - mind, not a technician here - because of all the lenses the light passes through. Human eyes don't have several layers of lenses like so and there are no such flares. When will they learn it finally (and I don't mean just Bioware, there are others who do it too). I guess the person who added that effect to the game does have glass eyes and probably sees the world like so but I don't have glass eyes.

I have film grain on in both ME1 and ME2. Although, in ME2 I didn't even know it was there until I looked in the options menu.
When I turned off the film grain in ME1 I couldn't stand it because all the characters looked like plastic dolls to me.

It definitely gives the game more cinematic and natural feel. Like Puppet Doctor ^^^ said, without it gives it a plastic look.
With that said though, I don't use it much in ME2. Kills performance with forced AA and film grain.

In ME, however, it totally fits, because the whole art direction and look & feel emulates an 80's Sci-Fi film. If it has film grain, it also needs lens flare!Whailor wrote...

Besides, I not a lot of games *really* go for realism - they always aim for a stylised aesthetic version of reality, usually aiming for a cinematic look and feel, hence the use of lens flares. In general, I like them. Are they realistic? No. Do they give a game nice atmosphere? Yes (of course, this is a matter of taste).
