Pretty early in the game with Grunt on Illum, and recently got the Claymore Shotgun for him (Krogan shotgun?.) Since he seems to prefer ARs, but I've usually manually choose shotgun for him. The problem is that he usually appears to fight from afar, and shotguns have little effect except in close quarters. Krogan NPCs seem to usually try to get as close as possible, with the whole "Krogan charging" mechanic, but it seems useless with Grunt. Then again, I can't recall any troubles with Wrex sucking in my brief experience with ME1, and I think he used a shotgun. Is this all in my head, or is it true that shotguns are "wasted" on squadmembers?

Shotguns are mainly wasted on squad members. Leave him with his AR, and have Tali switch to the heavy pistol. Don't use Jacob, that guy got boned for skills, poor bastard.
