There's still three characters I haven't unlocked (Thane, Samara and one more), but so far I've enjoyed bringing along Jack for her über-biotic powers, and Tali for her über-tech powers. Seing as I have über soldier-powers, it all seem to fit together quite nicely.
I don't know, on the higher difficulties Warp and Overload are pretty much required.

Miranda is obvious (she's the best companion in game from a purely powergaming perspective).
Get Tungsten Ammo as your bonus skill.
Use Miranda's overload to take down shields (so you don't need disruptor ammo).
Train Jack in group warp ammo for those time when you run into enemies with Barrier (especially Krogan).

Soldiers in my experience do well independently of squadmates
of course I am the person who went through Fallout 3 without any followers.

Me too, no followers in FO3.
Squadmates are optional for soldiers, IME.

Except when Soldier Shepard becomes too stupid in the first ME to play simon says on harder difficulties without Tali and Garrus' help. If only Saren had put hard locks on his bombs.Praetor Shepard wrote...

Mordin- Excellent support character that can burn and freeze opponents.
Miranda- Great for battling both tech and biotic characters with her warp and overload talents.
Samara- Good crowd control character.
Thane- Basically a combination of Miranda and Samara minus the tech talents.
Garrus- Good for overload and long range attacks.
Ideally though, you want good support and disabler characters since your focus is being the heavily armed battle tank. Miranda I would say is pretty much ideal for any class of character given that she's useful in pretty much every encounter, but I'd say she's especially useful for a Soldier since he/she lacks the Overload (useful) and Warp (verrrry useful) talents. Samara and Thane are great for extra biotics, and Mordin is great for picking off and disabling enemies (cyro).

I usually fare exceptionally well with Mordin and Miranda.
I used Mordin and Miranda for like, half my second playthrough of the game.

I think Bioware is okay with Necromancy. Otherwise I don't think they would have let me summon skeletons in Baldur's Gate. Also ME can only have so many topics created on it before the forum enters a cycle of death, rebirth, and decay. The "wheel of posts" I guess. I would like to know how people find month old threads though...
Anyways since I like default Shepard (sue me) and play as Soldier as my preferred playthru I would have to say the two best squadmates you can bring are Garrus and Thane. Both can support with Sniper fire, or use more rapid weapons when you need em'. Garrus has Overload to take out Shields and Concussive to knock out Barriers and enemies that get to close, like Husks. Garrus also has Armor Piercing ammo which is a nice bonus to his damage abilities. Thane has Warp to tear Barriers and Armor. You can also upgrade his Throw to a field throw which will take care of pesky groups of lesser enemies. and then he also has a nice bonus of Shredder ammo which will allow him to take down health bars incredibly fast.
Garrus and Thane are about the best support you can get as a Soldier, which is really all you need since you'll be the point man pretty much.
