I just showed my African-American friend this game and he complained how it was racist becuase the main character isn't a "****". He said that "White" people are depicted as heroes because they're freeing the galaxy. I told him that it's a person and what difference does it make the color of his skin is. What do you guys think? Are you with me on this one?

As for his thoughts on the matter, I think it's hilariously blown out of proportions. To complain about that in a game like this with all kinds of aliens is just borderline ridiculous. Not to mention you have Jacob, so the overzealous really have nothing to complain about.
The only thing I would even remotely consider complaining about is Shephard's voice, and how it wouldn't match his or her appearance.

Mass Effect is not racist, you choose which "skin color" you want to be and everywhere i turn there is plenty of diversity. You have scots, african Americans, Austrillians, Russians etc.

I think they should of made a different voice actor if you make your Shepard an African American.

It would be awesome for sure!
But keep in mind that we are talking about the main character of the game who appears and talks in every cutscene and dialogue in the game with multiple options on what to say. Adding additional voice actors beyond the original two is going to add a significant amount to the cost and time of development as well as disk space on a game that is already cramped into two disks as it is. I think they tried to pick a neutral voice for shepard but I agree that it doesn't really match the African/African American look much at all.

I'm sure they would have, if they could but most voice actors are part of SAG, just like regular actors. Thus they have a limit to how much they have to be paid. And you can bet that actors like Claudia Black, Jennifer Hale, and Simon Templeman are going to demand much higher rates than the standard. This means that for a four hour session (since the limit, i believe, is $300 per hour) you could be paying anywhere from $1200 to $10,000, or maybe even more. And recording all the dialogue for a game like Mass Effect 2 probably takes at least 20 hours per voice actor, possibly even more. That's $6,000 to $50,000 PER ACTOR. To fork over anotehr $50k for a top-rate voice actor like Hale or Meer to voice the protagonist, let alone 6 others, would never be approved in the budget.

Didn't the books discuss how most people didn't descend from a single peoples? Like Anderson, I think he's pretty mixed in terms of descent. Of course, people like Samesh Bhatia seriously throw that into question, what with the heavy accent and all. Otherwise, I'm pretty sure most are mixed in the 22nd' century.
Just because they're mixed doesn't mean they wouldn't have an accent. People from India are still going to have an Indian accent.

You could quite easily accuse the game of being sexist because the default character is a guy. Damn those bioware people for not picking a transgendered omniracial confusomat for the default! Damn them!!

Just because they're mixed doesn't mean they wouldn't have an accent. People from India are still going to have an Indian accent.
Not necessarily. Even today there are hundreds of thousands of people living in India with British accents. As in-planet immigration becomes simple as travelling to a neighbouring city, the accents are going to mix up even more.
They put most neutral possible voices to both Shepards because having a variety of voices and accents would just have been way too much to ask in a game with fully voiced dialogue.
