This is rediculous, no one every complained about playing a white elf in the original Legend of Zelda. Your friend should actually play with the character creator, like others have suggested. Perhaps I'll send him the character profile for Dolemite Shepard, he's one of my characters and deffinitely isn't white!

Dude, i am unsure what your friend really wants. Is he aware that he can use the face editor to make the male and female Shepard African-American?

To be honest, it is a lot easier than try to make a Chinese / East Asian Shepard... heavens knows how i tried ... /sigh

ironically, there are more templates nowadays for customising video game characters to be Black than (East) Asian. So i guess i should be the one complaining of racism, no?

As for the voice, i don't know about you but i believe that not all Black Americans sounds like James Earl Jones and not all White rappers sound like Eminem?

OP's friend was probably joking. If his friend really has a problem playing a character that isn't Black, he probably doesn't play very many games in the first place.

Do you think we should be able to make an African Shepard?

I just showed my African-American friend this game and he complained how it was racist becuase the main character isn't a "****". He said that "White" people are depicted as heroes because they're freeing the galaxy. I told him that it's a person and what difference does it make the color of his skin is. What do you guys think? Are you with me on this one?

I"m afraid this OP has to be a troll. Were talking about a universe here with characters of every color and size. Personalizing Shephard is a nice touch but in the long run it's the "HUMANITY" we're trying so save here. Don't sweat the small stuff and enjoy the game.

I think they should of made a different voice actor if you make your Shepard an African American.

Because Shepards voice actor with an African American doesnt really work out.

The idea of "african-american" in a century when most humans live somewhere other than Earth is, well, ridiculous.

It is more likely, in sucah a universe, you would run across someone named M'fume Jones, who looks all the world like Jet Li. Or Beowulf Shaeffer, a 7 foot tall albino from "We Made It".

That OP has to be total bull. Not at all believable, but nice try.

A) You can be make Shepard African American.
B) The first Spectre, and in my game, the highest ranking human in the galaxy, is a black guy named Anderson.

Your friend seems touchy on the subject, which is understandable considering the proponderance of white protagonists in video games.

Huh? My Shepard is black, so we can already make one. You lost me there, sir.

And maybe your friend is being facetious.

Statistically, it makes sense to have more white protagonists in an American game than any other race, as more than half of Americans are white. So, from a purely sales and statistics point of view, it makes perfect sense to predominantly use white characters.

That said, I'm happy I can still make a diverse set of races for my main character. They could have taken that away completely, which would have saved alot of time and money, so I'm happy with what we got.

Black people think they get the short end of the hero stick? Please, how many Indian heroes have you seen. Now a Punjabi Shepard with thick accent would be pure bad ass.

If they really wanted the game to be race realistic, they might as well have made 90 percent of the characters Han Chinese or Indian anyway, since those would be most likely the dominant powers in the future. Jade Empire in Space.

Well unfortunately, people don't usually base their emotional responses on statistics.

I'm not complaining about the character creation tools.  They cover all the bases.  I think Bioware did a good job with the variety of skin colors.  I just hate the haircut and nose limitations.

Gotta love how white people usually don't give any thought to skin color, while ethnic groups constantly go on and on about it. Then they call us racists because we don't obsess over it.

I hate it when people say that. Blonde blue eyed wasn't "Aryan". Aryan is a sanskrit word for noble. No where in Mein Kampf did he say that his ideal race was "blonde hair blue eyed"

And as for the original poster, what do you mean? A guy from Africa? Why don't you just say "Black Shepard", plenty of whites come from Africa along with other races.

Please stop saying black ppl - when it is "african-americans" shouting from the rooftops about every injustice - I am black, I am from the Caribbean - I thank the civil rights leaders for championing the cause but every flippin american who is ashamed to call themselves black or have a problem with any perceived slight is just too damn much.

Yes racism still exists - but it isnt around every corner.

In my ME universe, its three brothers (Anderson, Jacob and I) running the show - we stuck the white she devil to the back and dont give a rats ass what the illusive "man" says *comic relief"

Come on - ppl of Asian, Indian and Latin descent have much more to complain about in ME - Is there even a latin character in either game ??

To be honest, I think shepard can be portrayed as any race. He's doesn't look like anyone in particular. He can look kind of white, kind of hispanic, kind of black (light skinned-ish) you know what I mean...

Please tell your friend that you are able to customize the ethnicity of Commander Shepard, so if they want to make an African Shepard, Asian Shepard, etc they are welcome to do so. :)

My Manuel Shepard is the only Latino left from the human race.  I guess Latin America was conquered again and no longer exists as an entity :P
