I've been playing it on hard the entire time and some fight are really hard. I've found that you really do have maximize your parties abilities and charging in most of the time is a sure way to die fast.

Slightly off topic but I think this falls into the "slightly frustrating" category.

After rushing to my death repeatedly, the light bulb finally went on and I decided it was time to use some strategy. I set my tactics (possibly in an intelligent manner) and have tried to use my surroundings to my advantage. Also, when possible I have picked off enemies in small groups.

The problem I'm having however is AI mates that won't stay on target. I pause the game and set my targets for everyone. Everyone will go and attack their enemy once, then change it up and start running around after random enemies. Am I missing something? Or else, how do I get them to consistently attack who I want? Is this just a game problem or me?

Thanks

You can turn off Companion AI. Then they won't do anything unless you tell them to.

I agree with the OP.
This game is by far TOO much a strategy game than a ROLE playing game... most fanboys here don't want to hear that (I know), it's still true all together.

That's ridiculous!  RPGs have been strategic and tactical going back to the original D&D.  Just how strategic and tactical depended wholey on the dungeon master who is in this particular case, Bioware.  Thanks for thinking person's game Bioware!

My advice? It's all about tactics. No doubt this game is hard, but it's not impossible. I suggest keeping Wynne in your group ( she is like the best NPC in the game, seriously) and stocking up on potions before big fights. Also, I find it helpfull to mannually switch to each character and force feed them potions when they are getting beat. They tend to just sit there and die otherwise.

And I finished the same Back Alley quest just today. Like i said, Wynne was a big help.

Personally I like that the game is difficult. I've had my ass kicked more times in this game having barely touched the surface than I have in any other game on a complete playthrough. It's nice to actually have to use my head to live for a change.

That does not bode well for me, I think. When I encountered Wynne, Morrigan said her mind, and like the whipped puppy my elf is, he smarted off to Wynne. She seemed to take that as a challenge, though, and, uh, tried to kill me. So we killed her.

That was a long time ago in my playing history. :{

What i do is run with 2 tanks one a sheild one a 2 hander a rouge and a mage. Also the spacebar is your friend, if you are having a hard battle hit the space bar then you can choose each move your players make. Also focus your attacks on one enemy at a time instead of having each person engage someone it will make your life much easier.

Another thing is that you need to set the AI so that party members stay close by you, or they will run off on thier own. The button in the upper right of the Tactics window will allow you control that. If you have not changed it, that button will read DEFAULT.
Otherwise, I am often redeploying my partymates based on the changes in the fight. So as the numbers dwindle, 2 partymembers will start flanking the monsters. This adds bonuses to your fight.
Good Luck.

I started out on hard. I have been potion chugging the whole bloody game and from start to finish. Guess having tactical battles isn't what some people wanted huh. Should've played the console version then. Tis all about the pulling and crowd control and careful management of your entire party.

I want to say, as another Bioware fan that has played all Baldur's Gates, Icewind Dales, Planescapes, Mass Effect, ect ect I think by now I know how to manage through their games. I understand the classes, the basic math and functions, and which abilities accent which others with what class. However so far this game seems very tilted to one specific playstyle, and that is 'roll a healer'. I took a tank, built him up with good gear, good tanking strategies, and have him backed up with a two-hander DPS, bard using the bow and party buffs, and the one mage I got on my short playthrough Morrigan. Needless to say, her style is not suited for heal-bot, so I've been using potions and setting every tactics slot to make the most of my parties abilities which SHOULD get me victory.

But it's not. I'm being demolished, at lvl 8, by a group of farmers outside the town who want to collect on my bounty. Nevermind that there's 12 of them and only 4 of me, nevermind that my attacks seemingly miss all the damned time ( even with Precise Striking, go figure ), but they just mow through my tank like nobodies business with their farm impliments.

Now I'm not, like the OP, just giving up...however I am going to be forced to re-roll a healer class which to me is a very blatant slap in the face. I should be encouraged to adopt my own style and strategy and not be pigeon-holed into playing on easy or having specific classes. If they did not want to tailor the game to be playable with every kind of class-combination they should've added some linearity that didn't give me that option. While not completely sickened by this game, I am nevertheless quite disappointed to see the fruits of what I considered to be the best developers on the market go sour so fast.

I've been playing far more Borderlands and WoW over the past two days than DA:O, which I did NOT see coming at all.

I have to agree with the first post. This game is just frustrating. Sorry to say it but if I have to hit the space bar 400 times in 1 fight this game should have just been turn based. I don't think I would have gone through 400 turns in that fight its just that's how many times I have had to hit space to make what I want to happen, happen. Bioware made this game this way read the strat they talk about how they use all mages with micro manage. Not fun not fun at all...1 more crappy game that will die.

Maybe you just aren't very good? I only have to pause 5 or so times during the usual fight and I'm playing on hard.

OP's story sounds that much like my own (see http://social.biowar...c/9/index/88769) that I'd guess he is playing a melee rogue or at least using at least one in his group. When you have only four characters in a party even one bad character creates much sorrow, and melee rogues are absolutely feces-quality at the moment, because daggers are bugged.

I play normal, and I thought I was doing relatively well, but I came up against a mob that I'm getting consistently wiped trying to beat. I'm not new to these types of games, but I'm no expert like so many others here seem to so desperately want everyone else to think they are. If one of you guys that are saying you play the Hard or Nightmare modes has any REAL advice then I, and I'm sure the OP, would gladly listen. Otherwise, beating down the guys that are looking for help just makes you look like a bunch of tools.

Sadly i can tell you too i wish i hadnt bought it. Since i did ill play it all the way through because i like the story. Other then that i wish to god i had bought it on console so i could return it for some cash after i beat it once. With the crap-tastic character development why would i even want to play the same story again? Theres nothing to look forward to in this game besides the end of the story. Hell they could of atleast made more abilities for the warrior specs.....Oh look mah 4 new abilities i can get through the entire game. I have one more thing to say WOOP TI FUDGING DOO i doubt i ever EVER pre-order another bioware game, and ill make sure never to listen to game magazine reviews again.

BTW its not to hard its just fudging boring.

Are you even playing the same game as everyone else? :?

I have started the game with 2 different kind of characters (Male Human Noble Warrior & Female City Elf Warrior) and I am seeing 2 completely different stories. The City Elf is at the start of the Reign of the noble family that my Human Warrior is from. And his story is at the end of it!
So I am able to see two different sides of the same city with one change of race and sex.
As such I do not see where you get that game is not replayable?? And I have not even touch the Mage or Rouge nor the Dwarven race.
Also you must not be exploring the full tree of the Warrior skills. Let alone mixing some of the other traits to make different kinds of Warriors. Like a dual blade wielding Warrior, Sword & Shield, 2 handed weapon Warrior, and the Arcane Warrior (who can cast magic IN armor then run up and start hacking and slashing!) just to name a few!

Too boot, the over the counter storyline spans 100 years of the realm of Ferelden. Not counting the Downloadable content that is available right now. (ie: The Fury of Shale & Warden's Keep) Both of which add greatly to the amount of playable areas and amount game time. Add to that the fact that BioWare is going to be offering over 2 years of Support/DLC to the game (Noted from the Bonus disk of the Collector's set). Meaning that this is just a SMALL part of what we have to expect from BioWare in the future!!

I for one am very very pleased to own the Collector's version of the game via Pre-Order. And look forward to many many hours of enjoyment from this game. It has a place of honor next to my copies of Baldur's Gate, IceWind Dale 1 & 2, NeverWinter Nights 1 & 2 and Storm of Zehir. This game will set the bar for other games to try to beat for years to come!!!!!!!! :o

I never beat BG, BG2 or NWN although I played them. I still found this game to be balanced. The key is utilizing stuns. The dogs howl stuns enemies in a large group, if you have morrigan and keep her close you can run in and use mind blast as it doesnt seem to build too much aggro or winters grasp as it slows down one enemy, move your tanks in first to engage and not your whole party, shale if you have the DLC is ridiculous as a tank with his bellow and high constitution or use a sword and shield tank and use the shield stuns on several enemies, and set up traps if you've a rogue. To me it's kind of like set your strategy and things should work. When something goes wrong its something you can readily see and correct and when I reloaded because I dont like even one character dying in battle I would be able to overcome it the next time.

I'm getting a little frustrated on normal mode on the consoles. The whole Radial menu thing sucks, not being able to have your party in a formation sucks, I miss have tactical view , a mouse and a hud, it made things sooo much easier. The first fight at the mountains tore me a new one.
