Playing an elven rogue, I feel like im at a disadvantage because I didn't know exactly how i wanted to spec every character right from the beginning. Being an oldskool AD&D player helped with attributes but 20 hours in, I know I could have made better choices with skills and talents. I have the sneaking suspicion that's the catalyst.

I do HUGE tactics. Using geography to my advantage, pulling on part of a group my way to make it more manageable, making sure to flank enemies and be behind them. Using stun spells and healing spells. I press space bar 400 per fight so that I may micro-manage every single move of every single one of my party members. But in most fights, I usually totally run out of potions and mana and eventually, party members. I use Acids, poisons and maximime the ability usage of each of my party members. Each fight takes me about 15 minutes to run and almost invariably, my party gets wiped. Like I said: NO FUN + TOTAL FRUSTRATION = ME NO PLAY. Bioware really screwed up on that one.
The problem here is that you are a total noob.

I've NEVER played a game on easy in my life. If a game in unplayable on NORMAL or the game forces you to have just the absolute perfect combination of party members and skills and one single inch outside that, you are toast, then the game developers made a bad product and do not deserve my attention. Shame on you Bioware, shame on you....
Normal mode does not require such, it simply requires you to use tactics. Personally, I love the balancing on Normal mode. It's challenging without being aggravating (atleast for me, perhaps you're accustomed to easy ass games) and when I win a fight I usually do so.
If you're having that much trouble with a fight just tone down the difficulty. If that's too easy then I recommend getting better at the game.

Don't say the game sucks if you are the one who sucks. Use tactics and play it right you blathering idiot.
Nonsense. He doesn't suck. I share his frustration and I certainly do NOT suck. I'm an experienced NWN player, for one. If I could only get my tank to do his freakin' job, I, too, would have an easy time. The thing is that the enemies go for my fragile rogue (who has 30+ dexterity and yet NEVER dodges any freakin' attack) and the mages. Alistair just stands there, hitting an enemy in the back for 10 damage a hit.
Wash your mouth, boi.

I don't mean this in a degenerate matter at all btw!
What I mean is learn from your problems. Why don't your tactics work? Why do you get pummeled?
Few tips;
-look for skills that stun or otherwise disble opponents. Use them profoundly.
-use buffs and debuffs
-use consumables, have them on your hotbar
-make sure you have a 'tank' (warrior with shield) to take on the brunt of the mobs/heaviest opponent
-you don't have to run into the fights al the time, try and use your bows to pull sometimes
Ect.
Good luck!
BTW: I love that some fights in this game are harder myself but can understand it might be daunting for some.

Key point in this, every subsequent game after the BG franchise from Bioware felt like easy mode compared to those two games.

If you are dieing all the time you are not utilizing your party members effectively, not thinking through the battle scenario , and not using cover to your advantage.
There is a pause button for a reason so use it. Pause every few seconds and make sure your party members are attacking the right targets. Focus your fire on a single enemy and then move on to the next. If you have potions, don't be afraid to use them. Untill you develop a solid healer you will have to rely on potions for the bulk of your heals.
Since when did something being hard become an excuse to whine about it? If something is hard, you work at it untill you figure it out, even it takes multiple run throughs.
Let me ask you a question. Have you never sat down and reloaded the same save game a dozen or more times trying to figure out how to beat one single encounter? Have you never had your entire party wipe in a Pen and Paper game and have to start completely fresh with new characters in a new campaign? Do you not understand that it is the challenge that makes something worthwile?

I suspected as much. Any official post/info on this? A link would be cool.Crawling_Chaos wrote...
Easy mode on the PC = Normal mode on the consoles
Normal mode PC = Hard mode consoles
The PC difficulty is scaled significantly higher than that of the console.

I agree with the OP.
This game is by far TOO much a strategy game than a ROLE playing game... most fanboys here don't want to hear that (I know), it's still true all together.
Us fanboys LOVED the strategy in the infinity engine games so essentially you are saying we don't want to admit we like the part of the game we like.
The old RPGs in the 80s and early 90s were all about the combat strategy and using your abilities well.
But anyway I really do not want to get into the pointless debate about what is or is not a RPG. Put the game on easy, no shame in that I played ME on easy at first before I got the hang of playing a shooter-type of RPG, and concentrate on melee I think you will find alot more success.

Bioware didn't screw up anything. Your "TOTAL FRUSTRATION" is a result of you not playing the game well. It has nothing to do with design flaws on Bioware's part. It's too bad that you're not enjoying the game, but don't erroneously place fault where it does not belong.

But even so, why do people feel the need to lash out in disgust if they dislike a game as if a personal injustice has been done? Just stop playing and leave the forums. The reason you can't do that, the reason you can't just pack up and leave is because you know nobody will miss you or care that you're gone. People make posts like this because they're too insecure to just fade into the night. You're not that important.
Again, if you're watching a show that you don't like do you keep watching it and scream at the TV? No, you act like a grown-up and change the channel.

Turn off that "Tactics" garbage and micro-manage every fight yourself.

Because I am on normal and once I got the hang of the game, its pretty easy, and if I do get in a tight spot, I can always try a different approach.
My PC never has problems holding agro of 3-4 mobs, while my other off tank hold 1-2 easy, my other two DPS party members whip up on the bad guys.
Heck, I dive my tank into the middle of the enemy mob, and my off-tank right after that, with my magi casting spells and the my melee DPS going nuts on them.

The game isn't unplayable on normal; I'm playing it on normal. So are many others.
It also doesn't force you into one combination of party and skills; many people playing on normal and nightmare are using different groups. (For instance: I'm sword and board, with Mel as an archer/bard, Morrigan tossing spells, and Alistair fighting alongside me with sword and board.)
Thus BioWare did not make a bad product, and there's no shame on them.
I never played BG, BG2, or NWN, I don't play RTS games, and I'm still getting through it without it being a wipefest.
This isn't because I'm "better" than you, it's beacuse I've adjusted my playstyle to what this game requires: strategy and tactics.
You need to strategize. Back off the game for a bit, let that anger subside, then focus your energy on planning. You'll get the hang of it.

Seriously. Alistair has been a Grey Warden for all of 6 months, you're a new recruit. You're not exactly some warrior of legend, yet.
If you can't cut the mustard, play on Easy.

The game has an adequate amount of challenge on Normal difficulty. It's not so easy that you can just sit in a daze while your characters play the game for you (hello, that's what "Easy" is for). Most battles are intended to require a certain amount of strategic thought to accomplish them, whether that be focus firing on an especially powerful mage who can blast you with AE from a distance or having your party clean out some of the rubbish to make dealing with a large ogre more manageable.
Either way, I think you just EXPECT a game to be so easy that you can just waltz right through without a single problem, and that seems to be an issue at large with many games. THAT is what choosing EASY MODE is for.
Stop complaining about how its too hard because you are too lazy to muster 2 ounces of energy to think about things.

I know tons of good games, but the ones I remember best are those that offered a real challenge, they're always more rewarding.
Hardcore games FTW! GO BIOWARE!
