You know, I haven't played yet--blasted European release date--but I submit to you that if other players are successfully moving through the game on normal and even hard, the problem isn't the game, it's you. Also, I find it hard to believe you're really doing everything you say you're doing. Obviously "I press space bar 400 per fight" is hyperbole, which makes me wonder which other parts of your post stretch the truth.

Such an elite gamer as yourself may find it hard to believe, but it's possible that other players really are having more success than you. If you want to enjoy the game, asking for advice would probably be more productive than saying "This is too hard, I quit."

The difficulty may not be for everyone but I really like the strategy involved and maneuvering my characters and abusing the hell out of pause. I am particular where I want people posted and I am not afraid to have a character run interference on a dangerous ranged target if need be. Big thing is to not just charge in watch the flow of combat, tanks work in this game just differently but they do work.

Utilize stuns and control ability to limit the enemy or force them to go where you want them to. Keep track of your enemies and your team and make sure they don't go running off to get killed.

It's also possible that you're below the intended level for this particular quest. If you're playing on normal and getting hit twice as hard as you're hitting back, you're not playing the same normal mode as everyone else. The only other possibilities are that your characters are horribly undergeared, your talents are spent in the worst way possible, or you don't cast spells or use special attacks.

*Sigh* Don't get me wrong. Apart from the insane difficulty level, I love this game. But as a role-player, I am playing the ROLE of a highly trained hero. So imagine how I feel when a group of drunken idiots with swords come along and totally destroy my party of highly trained people... And again.... and again... etc...

For the majority of the fights I've had, I've had to reload 2 to 3 times to get the job done. Almost every fight costs me all of my potions and injury kits. I'm all for a challenge, but this game has turned into the most reloads I've ever done EVER. If I actually spend a percentage of my time waiting for the last save to reload, then there's something wrong.

I haven't yet played the game, im in the UK so tomorrow it is for me :)

It might sound bad but maybe you'll have to do a little grinding? Or tune down the difficulty no matteer how bad it hurts yourself. Apart from that all I can say is keep going and maybe you'll find out if you're doing something wrong?

@Trolls, stop insulting people - it's easier to hate than help, so try and use some effort.

Game is whacked in certain roles, sword and board is so far useless, i dont see any defense benefit from a shield whatsoever, all it does is reduce offense to the point you are popping 3 small potions on a 1 on 1 battle... I fought the blight 5000 times at redcliffe and failed everytime in 5000 strategies using shield.. i was about to delete the game i found it so stupid, that i went to 2h, which I am not even trained in and i seemed even more stronger defense wise

Its unplayable on normal? Are we playing the same game here? Im about 7 hours in and so far I have not had a single death. Its YOU who must be doing something wrong, not Bioware.

Ok, dude...I started this game on normal. The first couple of times I wiped with my party and then I was like ok....slow down. I started to appreciate what it takes not to wipe. The pausing, using your party mates to cast spells/tank/attack certain characters; it is an enjoyable experience.

Some helpful tips. In the early stages, use the dog. It has a fantastic AOE stun. Use someone to tank. Use someone to spank, and have a mage lay down some hot beats from afar. Don't get discourage, learn the game and what it has to offer and enjoy it. I know I did and this game is fantastic because of it.

@ the OP

You seem to be doing the tactics just fine :)

Might I suggest that you focus your fire (charge) on one enemy at a time, try to use area of effect spells (it can be done; if you have them, that is).

Splitting a larger group of enemies into two or three is a great idea; just run away from the major group. Some of them will follow you, rinse and repeat. If you feel, you're not strong enough come back later (if you can) and dish out some serious damage.

As for playing on easy, the game will not punish for playing on easy in certain situations. I had to do it myself in BG2 a couple of times...

Try looking around, and see if you can use something in the enviromment.

Oh, a lever - let's try to see what it does...?

That's pretty ignorant statement and is antiwhining...
You havnt played every style and I notice many bugs already that can destroy a character.
But aside from bugs, maybe they didnt get that uber weapon drop that could really make a difference,
Maybe they missed buying that one item on the merchant... maybe they played the wrong path first.
Maybe they spent all their points on sword and board cuz they don't like 2H weapons but it turns out
it is  a must because board and sword sucks? Whatver the case.. complain all you want but never
attack anyone.. or I will be on you like white on rice showing you how ignorant you are.

Once again more antiwhining based on ignorance.. Sorry you are only playing one character a certain way.. You have no experience to even look at someone let alone attack them verbally... Allistair is a friggan wussy, just wait to you have to go thru the game with that toad...

A quick comment to those having problems with some fights:

If you become too frustrated with a specific fight (and you don't want to tune it down to 'easy'), simply go somewhere else and try different areas and quests. Some difficult locations might turn much easier if you return later.

There are some fights in the game that are actually meant to be winnable by a high-level party.

Also: weapon runes are VERY important to your party DPS.

I agree with the OP.
This game is by far TOO much a strategy game than a ROLE playing game... most fanboys here don't want to hear that (I know), it's still true all together.

Surely if your roleplaying a group of characters within combat, it would be best to learn how to roleplay tactics, no ?

Tactics it is by the way.Your strategy should be how you intend to tailor your party to YOUR style, throughout the entire game.

no offense to the topic starter, but i think that gamers (particularly people who only know an RPG to be WoW) this is a hack n slash. it's completely different. if you ever played Baldur's Gate it has the same difficulty spikes IMO. poster prior to this one are correct when it is ALL about strategy and tactics. i am glad i didn't buy a game ill breeze through in a week. good job Bioware.

I am not having any trouble on normal and I have only played kotor 1 and kotor 2. Plus this is the PC version so I don't  think it is that hard.

The game is not too hard on Normal - it's just boring at times, with a tendency to drag, and your party does come off looking like a bunch of losers barely staying alive, not the future saviors of the world.

If I have to actually manage the skills of four characters in order to bring down 3 rank and file enemies in a timely fashion - then I'm just not interested.

I want my main character to be able to chop through a whole crowd of mooks all by himself... And if I design my characters well - pay attention to how I level them up, do side quests to get them good equipment, etc. - then I don't want to be bothered with micromanagement for anything but the big fights.

Fortunately, Easy mode is quite fun.

Ive played every game from bioware, all the way back to BG1, and I find the fights on normal quite difficult, it feels like all I do is potion spam, and I am constantly pausing and giving orders to my party members.

I feel more like im playing an rts then im playing an rpg:P

I love this game otherwise, but the fights are quite difficult.

Of course, some of the mighty old-school, hardcore RPGers will tell you to pick up your bootstraps and regale you with tales of how the mere thought of their rippling e-biceps were enough to send the entire Darkspawn blight into a panicked retreat, but I will let you in on a little secret:

This game can be quite difficult! :)

You will probably wipe a lot on your first playthrough. It isn't just you that is having these problems, even if most are too embarrassed to admit it.

There are plenty of tips on these forums for extending your survival in Ferelden, but I would say that one of the most important, particularly on the PC version, is to fully utilize your party and your ability to pause-and-play. Don't just expect that you can auto-attack while your party takes care of business. DA:O expects real involvement from you, with your entire party. Stock up on poultices. Take up herbalism to make more of these poultices. Don't save them for a rainy day, use them! This is your party, and their lives are at stake!

Also, at the risk of sounding condescending, which is not my intent, don't be afraid of turning the game down a difficulty, to Easy. I know many of us have too much macho gamer pride to commit such an unspeakable act, but perhaps if you put the game on Easy until you become familiar with the game mechanics, and then move it up later, you will have a better experience. Those multiple difficulty options are there not only to allow you to make a tricky boss fight easier, but to extend the replay value. I imagine by your 12th playthrough you will be begging for Nightmare! :)
