Multicore ME2 Freeze: After New Game Select and/or After Char. Creation

Overview:

When playing ME2, a freeze occurs in one of two locations. 1) If the intro movie at the “Press Any Key” screen is skipped, a freeze occurs after selecting New Game >> Male/Female/Import ME1 Character; 2) If the intro movie at the “Press Any Key” screen is viewed, a freeze occurs after completing the character creation sequence.

First

According to the listed requirements, my PC comfortably exceeds all points.

Second

The thread that I believe most closely covers my issue is here: http://social.biowar...772168. However, this thread includes worries about single cores, and also general stuttering. These, I feel, are separate issues. I am having zero troubles with game stuttering. Aside from the freezes, the game runs beautifully. Due to these inconsistencies, I felt it was not improper to begin a new thread specifically for users running multicore processors who run into freezes.

Third

I am playing (at least, I am attempting to play) Mass Effect 2. I have a physical disk, ordered from Amazon.com. In the configuration utility, the version is listed as MassEffect2.exe: v1.00.

My Rig (According to System Properties):
OS: Windows Vista SP2, Business, 32 Bit
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q9550 @ 2.83Ghz
RAM: 4 GB
Video: NVIDIA GeForce 9800GT
Audio: Realtek HD
DirectX: 10.0

My Rig (According to ME2 Config Utility):

OS: Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Business
CPU:
Intel® Core™2 Quad CPU    Q9550  @ 2.83GHz
Family 6, Model 23, Stepping 10
# CPUs: 1
# Cores: 1
Clock Speed: 1831 MHz
RAM:
Physical Memory: Total: 2.99 GB, Available: 1.74 GB, Used 1.24 GB
Video: Acer X233H on NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT
Audio: Realtek HD Audio
DirectX: 10.0

Problem Details

What: Game freezes—shows as “Not Responding” in task manager.

When: If I skip the intro video that plays on the “Press Any Key” screen, a freeze occurs immediately after
selecting Male/Female/Import ME1 Character. If I watch the intro video, a freeze occurs immediately after finishing character creation. Either way, the freeze happens every time (have also tried rebooting and reinstalling).

Where: Same as when—I haven’t gotten further than character creation in game.

Why: I believe the problem has something to do with my processor’s number of cores being misinterpreted by the
game client, thus causing the game to respond as if my system did not meet the requirements.

To others who would post here: Please keep this thread clean. This is just for people whose games are freezing, and just for people who have multicore processors (ie, people who meet or beat the game’s listed requirements).

**

Dear Bioware, I love you much and I trust you to return the favor! Valentine’s day is coming soon!

Do u gain the game access by disabling the network adapter?

I can confirm that I just disabled the network adapter and ran into the same freeze points. This issue has apparently nothing to do with internet connection.

So, we aint talking about the connection lag to the EA server, and you already physically disabled the network adapter before launching the game.
Could you please download Process Monitor, setup a filter for MassEffect2.exe and save the log from the begin to the "unknown event"?

okay, I've saved logs from both scenarios: when the game freezes after the new game select, and also when the game freezes after the character creation. They're rather long. How do you want me to get them to you so you can see?

By the way, nowhere in these logs do I find anything that says "Unknown Event"

"Unknown Event" > freeze -- PM a link to http://www.mediafire.com/ or something else.

You got it. Just a sec on the PM.

Hey IKe0s, I sent you that PM. It includes links to two logfiles. The first link represents what happened up to the first freeze (where the intro video is skipped) and the second link represents what happened up to the second freeze (where the intro video is viewed).

Another note...when I look in my task manager, under the process tab, I have no option to 'set affinity'. Come to think of it, I can't recall a time when I've ever had to look in there for that particular option. I know for sure I have a quad core processor...and it seems like most people with multicore processors are able to tinker around with this option. I wonder why I can't...

I feel you brothar', exact same problem, except i still cant get past " select male/female/import " because the insuing loading screen causes doom, death and freezing.. And i cant set " affinity " either only " priority ", funny thing is i got a second longer into the loading screen with priority set to " realtime " but thats about as far as i got.

Well I've been looking into this a bit more and, under my task manager, on the performance tab, there is only one graph for my CPU Usage History. I believe this means that my issue may not specifically have to do with the game (although it's never manifested itself before ME2, presumably because of the related single core issue).

I'm wondering if anyone has a multicore processor, whose task manager is properly indicating multiple cores, who is also having this issue. If my guess is right, they don't, and won't be posting to confirm in this thread because they'll be too busy playing the game =P

**FOUND A SOLUTION FOR USERS WITH MULTICORE PROCESSORS RUNNING INTO FREEZES**

THIS SOLUTION DOES NOT INVOLVE DOWNLOADING ANYTHING.

If you are encountering freezes, but have a multicore processor (and otherwise meet or beat the game requirements) this may work for you:

First of all, check the ME2 config utility. When I checked mine (before the solution) it showed that it was detecting my CPU's name correctly, but only showing # of Cores as 1.

Turns out, so was the rest of the PC. Must have had this processor for months and not known that I wasn't using it properly...duh.

Here's what I did (credit goes to the Australian tech support site I found this from)...

1) Go to "Start"

2) Type in "run"

3) Type in "msconfig"

4) Go to the "Boot" tab

5) Select "Advanced Options"

6) At this point the startup number of processors should show "1" and should be unable to be changed.

7) Uncheck "Number of Processors"

8) Check "Detect HAL"

9) Click "Ok", then click "Apply"

10) Reboot your PC.

If all goes according to plan, when you reload, you should be able to do this:

11) Go to "Start"

12) Type in "run"

13) Type in "msconfig"

14) Go to the "Boot" tab

15) Select "Advanced Options"

16) You should again see the start up number of processors. However, this time when you click the drag down menu you should be able to select the proper number of cores (4 in my case).

17) Click "Ok", then click "Apply"

At this point you should check your Task Manager--if this fix worked for you then under the performance tab you will be able to see as many CPU Usage History graphs as you have CPU cores (again, 4 in my case). Also, if you run the ME2 Configuration Utility (and, don't forget!, let it rescan your system!) it should show not only your processor but also the correct number of processor cores.

And there you have it.

Now, my base rig easily beat the ME2 requirements. It was just that I hadn't set up my rig properly. So...my issue was...in fact...not a problem with the game itself. That means for all of you single core users out there I can only offer my condolences and the hopes that a patch from Bioware does the trick.

But...for those of you running multicore processors like I was, who this solution has helped...all I ask is that you remember me when you name your first-born.

=)

goodnight, I'm off to play some FREAKIN Mass Effect 2

Tried green screen - FAIL

Tried windowed mode - FAIL

Tried this - FAIL

Just dont know what to do realy, too afraid to try the 4th time through the character creation cuz first time it bluescreen'd me, and the other times it rebooted...

Hi,

I purchased the game 3 days ago, and have been wanting to play it ever since... Enter Mr. Freeze!!
Initially faced installation issues (Insert Disk2...), but then copied the both DVD contents onto HD, ran setup without any discs in drive ..installed fine.

Is there a fix or a workaround for the freeze at Character Creation ?
Perhaps a save game that has the character selected already ?

My Rig:
OS : Windows XP SP3
Processor : AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+
Motherboard : Asus M2N32 SLI Deluxe
Memory : 3GB RAM
Graphics : Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTX ( 768mb )
Direct X 9.0c

Have all the latest drivers installed.

Here's what I've tried already:
  • Extracted 'english.rar' contents to appropriate folder in my install directory (C:\\\\Program Files\\\\Mass Effect 2....)
  • Unplugged wireless Keyboard and mouse - using PS/2 Devices now... freezes still
  • Installed latest patch 1.02 - Got the ME2 CDKey Check error 'Failed to authenticate the disc'
  • Pasted 'NO Dvd fix' from ' GameCopyWorld ' - Game starts... then freezes again after selecting character
  • Set Affinity to one CPU... freezes still
  • Mounted the .iso file of Disc1 through Daemon.. No luck still.
  • Ran the game through windowed mode..Freeze
Im quite certain its not my config thats the issue here.. since it meets gameplay requirements.
But is there something I havent tried already, maybe overlooked on the forum ? Ive gone through them many times.. may have missed something. This ordeal has gotten so frustrating its escalated to PURE RAGE for not being able to play a legit copy of the game!!

Please advise... any help would be greatly appreciated
Just want to play game..

Thanks in Advance Guys!
