My story,
my tech guy was Jacob, he died at the door, didnt mind tbh he was boring. my first squad leader was Garus, he survived which was good he was my favroute character from mass one.my dumber choices come into effect on part two. i sent Tali back with the survivors, they all lived that was good, she was my romance option. i put Grunt as secound squad leader (yeah laugh it up, it was a good idea at the time, good for nothing pure breed krogan if wrex were here.....) yep you geussed it he died. i chose Jack as the barrier gal went without a hitch. my squaddies at the final battle were Legion and Garrus. then Mordin poped his clogs for no damn reson. i made all ship upgrades and had squad loyalty, just made lame choices i geuss.... Oh and i was renagade not all bad but i got stuff done!
its not in Chronological order but you guys can figure it out,
This is a good set of examples. Why are people doing this? On purpose? Jacob has no tech skill at all, so obviously he will die. And Grunt is not a leader, so of course he is the wrong choice. Jack is one of the correct choices for the Biotic specialist, because she is the most powerful human Biotic in the galaxy.
Are people just not paying attention to what the jobs actually are? I don't get it.

Miranda: leading both teams.
Grunt: escort.
Tali: tech specialist.
Jack: biotics
Thane and Legion in my party (first time)
Tali and Legion in my party (second time)
All upgrades. All loyalties.
Paragon
And everything turned out fine. There has got to be some sort of timer or something. Cause many people used the same team and had Mordin randomly die. Ideas?

So I ended up doing it without any losses whatsoever. Seemed logical to me but it does appear people are getting it wrong, like putting a young Krogan as the leader of a team who only knows the tactic of charging head on lol.

Put mordin at escort and your good to go
Also you can pot garrus on second time you need someone to lead a team
Tryed it and it worked well

Guess I'm glad I'm impulsive, I didn't waste time between the IFF and the final mission, didn't know about the crew timer. Didn't focus on squad upgrades either, but I guess I got enough to pass through.

I thought about Garrus. There has got to be some way that Bioware determines who lives and dies. Random wouldn't make any sense to me...

i did, Grunt being cloned from all of them Krogan warlords should have some exprinace imo,but his name should have been a clue lol, as for Jacob i could care less if he died i didnt want to put the more...interestin characters in danger. plus he was realy boring!

Reloaded and had miranda lead every team (garrus and thane were part of my squad). Just to be on the save side I sent legion into the tunnels, hopin it would keep tali save. Sent jack away to escort the doc, wasnt taking any more chances with her and miranda on the same team (If you ask me she was a liability from the start anyway), Had samara keep up the shields, she gave me a scare at the end, but it worked out well. No losses 2nd time

I generally decided that using the Geth for hacking (him being a tech class and geth being able to do multiple functions) was the best bet for the specialist. Garrus being the leader of the squad was a better choice since he has experience, even if he was my normal team member, Samara for the shield because Justicars are powerful (my second choice would have been Jack), and Thane to escort the group back (not like it matters who there) but generally because hes quite adamant about keeping good people alive, like his recruit mission.
So I ended up doing it without any losses whatsoever. Seemed logical to me but it does appear people are getting it wrong, like putting a young Krogan as the leader of a team who only knows the tactic of charging head on lol.
I used the same exact set up as you, but Thane died.

I sent Mordan into the vents. Shot to the head.
I lost Jack at the entrance to Skyne-I mean the Reaper creation chamber. Damn bugs coming out of the goddamn walls.
Tali made it and caught a sexually transmitted cold. I found that very, very funny.

Garrus lead both teams, used Legion as the hacker, and Samara to shield the squad. Used Grunt and Thane the whole time. Tali escorted the survivors back and all my crew survived. Played mostly paragon with renegade about 1/3 full
